End of Summer PAR-TAY

August 23rd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Friday, Aug 27th @ The White Rabbit (Newmarket)

The air that creeps in our skin through the crevices and light fabrics of what we wear has become colder and colder these past couple of weeks, which means fall is just around the corner. And for some of us, it also means going back to school.

As the last hurrah for the summer before hitting the books, why not plan a roadtrip with friends this Friday, Aug 27th to Newmarket and celebrate with The Elwins. Plus, the line-up is looking incredibly awesome with Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club) & The Good Times Band, The Expos and more on the bill.

And get this: a ticket also buys you dinner with the band, and the first 100 people will be receiving freebies!

Music starts at 9pm, but we suggest you go early. The White Rabbit is located at 185 Main St. South, Newmarket, ON. Drive/take the VIVA/run/walk/trebuchet there. (Google map is your friend.)

And yes, it is an all-ages event, so there won’t be any burly bouncers to kick you out and send you home to your mother.

Ticket: $8 (in advance)/$10 (at the door).

What’s Going On?

August 23rd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean Toronto is running out of things to do and shows to go to.

MONDAY, Aug 23
The Gladstone’s monthly “Tweetup” is part of a fundraiser for Public Displays of Affection‘s EP exhibition. They will be showcasing performances by This Month Only, composed of a Torontonian sound artist and a Danish video artist, and Allie Hughes, who we love @The Gladstone’s Melody Bar, 19+, PWYC.

WEDNESDAY, Aug 25
Want to hit up an early Halloween party in the summer? Go check out Rich Aucoin
‘s EP release of Public Publication @Tiger Bar, 19+, $10. The Facebook event blurb claims that due to the small size of the venue, “this show will SELL OUT faster than toothpaste at a meth lab, so get there early”.
But before that, go catch The Killers‘ frontman Brandon Flowers for no cost at all @MTV Live, All-ages, 5pm. FREE. I dare you show up in your Halloween costumes and outdo Flowers’ eye-makeup. DO IT. Then take pictures, and send them to us.

THURSDAY, Aug 26
As part of her Eastern Canada tour, indie folk musician Andrea Gauster will be performing
in support of the release of her second full-length We’re Not Lost at Kensington Market along with local performances by Graydon James & the Young Novelists, Kevin Miles Wilson and Tronic @The Supermarket, $10. Facebook.
Or… venture down eastward and catch Lullabye Arkestra playing with Titan and Hot Kid @The Garrison, 19+, $10. Facebook.

FRIDAY, Aug 27
To mark the end of summer, go party with The Elwins in Newmarket! (You can always make that drive/VIVA ride.) They will be playing alongside Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club) & The Good Times Band, The Expos, Paper Fortunes, and Bon Chapeau. All the fun happens @The White Rabbit (185 Main St. South, Newmarket, ON), All-ages, $8 (in advance)/$10 (at the door). Facebook.

Overheard at Shows: irony and being vegan

August 22nd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

SappyFest 2009
Last summer, at George’s, a supergroup of the Constantines, Ladyhawk, and $100 were playing Neil Young covers. Two girls and a dude wander in, not realizing what was going on. The band starts playing ‘Cortez The Killer’ and one of the girls says to her pal, “This is a Dave Matthews song called Across The Water”.
Wavelength 500 @ the Garrison, February 14
(pointing to an older, nerdily-dressed guy at the end of the bar looking around)
Guy 1 :  Look at that guy… he’s all alone, no friends, it looks like he wants to talk to somebody… y’know I feel like buying him a drink or something.
Guy 2: Ya, that’s kind of sad… he should at least chat somebody up.
The guy at the bar turned out to be Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) who headlined the show.

Dr. Dog @ Lee’s Palace, April 14

“Irony is when you have a vegan, who’s really into not eating meat, ends up getting hit by a meat-packing service truck. THAT’S IRONIC.”

“That wasn’t Dr. Dre!”

Record Store Day @ Sonic Boom, April 17
“They better have vegan sandwiches.”

Hot Chip @ Kool Haus, April 20
“Dragon!”

OK Go @ the Mod Club, April 23
Girl 1:
Do you know OK Go?
Girl 2: That’s the band playing tonight, right?

Overheard any funny/strange conversations at shows lately? Share them to us! We want to hear them. E-mail me at carmel@singinglamb.ca!

What I Learned From Toronto Island

August 17th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Toronto Island Ferry

1. Yes, eat that bagel on your ferry ride.
Just as with Osheaga, it is advised that you stuff yourself with a big meal before the show to avoid two things – long line ups and overpriced food. So if Toronto Island is your destination, swing by Union Station and buy yourself a bagel or god forbid some McDonald’s. Something that’ll fill you up for a few hours, then hit up a 24-hour restaurant once you return. Alternatively, if you do want to buy food there, it’s best to show up early and get the food before the music even starts to prevent the awkward pushing back into the crowd while carrying hot poutine.

2. Want to bring food to the show instead?
Sure. Just pick the right security guard to search your bag. Some are less thorough than others and may not catch the bags of sandwiches and fruit. You can sneak in enough food for a picnic between sets!

3. Don’t leave your bag on the ground.
Someone may kick it and before you know if, you’re waving a flashlight around trying to look for where it went. Stressful and scary stuff.

4. Toronto Island is a small, small world.
Unlike larger music festivals, Toronto Island is actually fairly small in comparison. Therefore it’s way easier to find friends or even just run into them by accident. Look beside you next time, your boss may be sipping a beer.

5. May as well bring a book of Sudoku with you.
You’ll need it for your two hour wait to get back onto the ferry.

Nightwood Release New Song, Play Toronto This Weekend

August 3rd, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Nightwood

Montreal indie-rock trio Nightwood have released a new song that can be downloaded for free right now on meetyouattheshow.com. Click here to listen to “Carve A Path Like A Valley Through The Land”. The track takes veers off the power rock of their full-length Carta Marina and the result is a simmering summer jam that’s still soaking with attitude, catchy riffs and thumping beats.

Nightwood will also be playing the Mod Club this Saturday!  We highly recommend you go!

What I Learned From Osheaga

August 3rd, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

I spy...

1. A festival is like a crowded mall.
I’m not one for festivals and this may be the reason why. I suffer from something called mall rage – the equivalent of road rage but in malls, stemmed from a hatred of people who walk slowly in malls and block your way as you attempt to navigate the darn place. Osheaga is like a gigantic outdoor version of this. Fine, the fresh air helps but not when I’m fuming with impatience trying to run from one stage to another. Hey, you may not care if you miss a few songs from The National but I want to hear “Fake Empire”! Potential anger management is in my future, I can already see it.

2. Starvation trumps shelving out money for overpriced food.
It’s kind of a given that festival food is pricy but this was just ridiculous. Instead, my plan of action consisted of an unhealthy overdose of breakfast followed by a feast afterwards. Now I’m not condoning starvation, I’m just simply suggesting you save your money and not waste it on a $10 mini burger that you’ll regret half way through the day. If you feel weak or lightheaded though, go grab a burger. Wouldn’t want you to pass out before the headliners take the stage.

3. Two words: buddy system.
It became pretty clear right off the bat that the world of texting/Tweeting/Facebooking/etc. was not going to help me find my friends. Let’s face it, with a crowd this big it really is finding a needle in a haystack. By the end of the night, I lost count of how many times I was told to meet someone by a tree or a lamp post or that guy with the Blue Jays cap. Next time, handcuff yourself to a buddy.

4. What’s better than watching bands? Spotting other musicians watching bands.
Arguably more exciting than watching Beach House on stage on Day 1 was spotting Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld watching Beach House. It’s always great to see bands check out other bands they admire. They’re music fans too, you know. Emily Haines and Evan Cranley dancing and singing along to the Arcade Fire while Torquil Campbell throws fist pumps in the air – priceless!

5. People watching at its best.
Its one thing to just sit at your local Starbucks and stare at people as they walked by but Osheaga was a people watcher’s dream. The fashionable, the drunk, the awkward couple making out. They’re all there.

6. Hiding flasks in your pants really works.
Not that I did it.

What To Pack For Osheaga

July 29th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Not exactly what I had in mind when I said sun protection...

For those throwing clothes across their room right now, searching for the perfect outfit to wear to this weekend’s Osheaga festivities in Montreal, PAUSE. Read this list of essentials to bring with you, it should help you with your packing list. That perfect outfit though? Well that’s still your responsibility, go ahead and continue throwing clothes around. My room’s not looking so hot either…

1) How much do you love your hearing?
I mention this every time, folks. No matter where you are, indoors or out, you need to protect those ears of yours. BRING EARPLUGS. Forgot them? Swing by a drug store and pick up a pack.

2) The sun is not your friend. I repeat, NOT.
Sunburns are not fun. So to prevent yourself from looking like a lobster don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat.

3) CFF – Concert Friends Forever!
Let’s face it – it’s not fun going to a show alone let alone a festival. So make sure you have at least one buddy there with you at all times to prevent lonely crying sessions in the bush.

4) Say cheese!
Cameras – no, not the fancy ones that will get confiscated by security. Anything from a small digital camera to cheap disposable ones will do. Just so you can document all the great bands and maybe your friend who forgot to bring sunscreen and actually ends up looking like a lobster. I guarantee you there will be at least one person in your group who will forget.

5) Umbrella
No matter what the Weather Network says. Mother Nature is not kind.
