Sunshine and temperatures in the mid-teens? Could it be spring at last? Here’s some news!

After recent, massive lineup announcements for festivals including OsheagaOver The Top and Olympic Island, there has been a lot of rumors as to who might appear at the 15th annual North by Northeast Music & Film Festival Conference (NXNE), which takes place June 17-21. Thanks to this little story from NOW, we know several acts confirmed, including Black LipsFake BloodHEALTHKing Khan & BBQ ShowNo Age andMatt & Kim. The Singing Lamb can also confirm that Halifax’s Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees and Calgary’sWoodpigeon. We of course will be covering the festival, and look for some special announcements from us in the upcoming weeks about NXNE and other events this summer.

For those of you with tickets to the sold-out The National show on May 21st at the Kool Haus – only 35 days! – opening for the band will be Brooklyn’s Colin Stetson. An avant-garde multi-instrumentalist – but most notably as a baritone saxophonist, I discovered today that Stetson has a remarkable musical resume, which includes touring alongside Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre and recording with the likes of Tom Waits and TV On The Radio. He recently released a mostly experimental jazz album, entitled New History Warfare Vol. 1, that you can listen to songs from on Stetson’s website or his MySpace.

Atlanta heavy metal band Mastodon know a thing or two about concept albums, and their fourth full-length Crack The Skye, tackles “art aesthetics of Tsarist Russia, astral travel, out of body experiences and Stephen Hawking’s theories on wormholes”. A combination of metal riffs, prog rock, average song lengths over five minutes and the crushing vocals of Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds, this album will knock you flat on your ass and not stop to apologize. Alas, I hadn’t noticed that these guys are going to be at The Opera House on May 5th and the show is now sold-out, but this album is still one of the best I’ve heard this year.

If you want to catch Apostle of Hustle in a more intimate venue, the band will be playing an all-ages show at The Music Gallery on May 29th. This of course will all be a warmup for the band’s July appearance at the Olympic Island Festival. The band’s third full-length album Eats Darkness is scheduled to drop May 19th.

Scottish garage-poppers 1990s will be at The Horseshoe Tavern on June 3rd. Check out the band here where you can listen to songs off their upcoming sophomore album, Kicks.

The Decemberists are coming to Toronto! Oregon’s favourite orchestral folk-rockers will be coming to the Kool Haus on August 3rd in support of their new album The Hazards of Love. Opening for The Decemberists will be Cincinnati’s Heartless Bastards – tickets are on-sale now, but don’t expect them to last that long. Colin Meloy and his merry gang of men and women will also be on The Colbert Report April 27th.

Is there anything that Justin Timberlake can’t do? Front one of the biggest boy bands of the 90s? Check. Have a respected solo career? Check. Date pre-crazy Britney? Been there, done that. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Check…wait, what? JT will be joining rapper Lupe Fiasco and singer Kenna in this trek up Africa’s highest mountain, in order to raise awareness for the world water shortage. Read the full story here.

By way of apology for missing the 15th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s tragic death, here is Winter Gloves covering Nirvana’s iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Rest in peace Kurt, you will never be forgotten.

Before I return to (not) studying for my two exams next week, I thought I leave you with “8 Songs Not to Shag To” – I’d advise checking it out before you plan your next sexual escapades (thanks to Radio Exile for this one).

Cheers,
Max

Excitement

March 10th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Hot Panda

Hot Panda

Well there’s only one more sleep until the madness of Canadian Music Week begins, and it seemed that you could almost feel the excitement crackling and bubbling in the air throughout the city today. My friend and I successfully navigated the underground labyrinth known as PATH, and made our way from Ryerson downtown to the Royal York Hotel (which I’m planning on rushing to on Saturday night after Bloc Party to hopefully catch Crystal Castles’ set) to pick up our wristbands for the week. Yet before Singing Lamb is packed with interviews, concert reviews and photos, here is somewhat regular news for you. Enjoy!

I’ve already told you about Vancouver’s Japandroids, whom I hope to check out this week, but there are two other new bands I’d like to share with you that I haven’t been able to stop listening this week. Beast is the Montreal duo of vocalist and lyricist Betty Bonifassi and composer/producer Jean-Phi Goncalves. I first heard them on George Strombo’s radio show this week, and yesterday I got a package from home, which included a USB drive from my brother featuring their self-titled debut album. It couldn’t have came at a better time either. The band describe their sound as “trip-hop” on their MySpace, but listening to songs like “Mr. Hurricane” and“Satan”, but I would call them a hard electronica band with elements of hip-hop, strong rock drumming and Bonifassi’s powerful gospel pipes that set the duo apart from the current crop of Montreal bands. Hot Pandaon the other hand, are a four-piece from “Stabmonton” (if you don’t know where they’re talking about, you should probably read this), and have drawn comparisons to everyone from Talking Heads to Roxy Music with their highly danceable pop songs such as “Cold Hands, Chapped Lips”. The band is signed to Mint Records(home to The New PornographersImmaculate MachineNardwuar the Human Serviette and more), was featured in the independent music label’s recent spring ’09 ‘zine Fresh Breath of Mint (that you can pick up at your favourite local music store), and their debut album Volcano…Bloody Volcano is in-stores now. And yes, in case you were wondering, both bands will be in Toronto this week for CMW.

So unaware to most of Canada, the East Coast Music Awards 2009 took place two weekends ago in beautiful Corner Brook, Newfoundland. According to my friend Dave, a good time was had by all, and Corner Brook was treated to amazing performances from Hey Rosetta!In-Flight Safety, and Jenn Grant. At the awards gala, Hey Rosetta! were the big winners, coming away with three well-deserved awards includingGroup Recording of the Year and Recording of the Year. If you’ve yet to listen to this band or see them perform, they have three upcoming shows in Toronto – two during CMW (including a performance at “The Indies” award show) and on April 24th at Lee’s Palace with Bruce Randall.

The spring and summer show announcements are coming in fast and furious. Here are some of the more recent announcements, check the Shows page for more info and other concerts:
Spiral Beach will be playing at the Horseshoe on March 24th
Peanut Butter WolfJames Pants and Mayer Hawthorne will be at the Revival Bar on May 1st
Born Ruffians are opening for Franz Ferdinand at the Kool Haus on May 4th
The Von Bondies are back in town on May 29th for a show at Lee’s Palace

Yesterday morning on a whim, I downloaded a DJ Mick Boogie mixtape entitled Brooklyn Soul. What it does is takes Jay-Z’s last album American Gangster, and mashes it with classic Marvin Gayes soul songs (“Sexual Healing”“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, etc). I was pleasantly surprised – it was more understated and less over-the-top than other Jay-Z mashups that I’ve heard in the past (see: Linkin Park’sColllision CourseDanger Mouse’s The Grey Album). You can download it for free here.

Don’t know how I missed this, but a little while ago Toronto’s Winter Gloves covered LCD Soundsystem’s“Someone Great”, condensing James Murphy’s sad, yet blissful disco gem from six minutes into two. Check it out here or the original here. It was also recently sampled by Kanye’s “protege” Kid Cudi for “Can I Be”, which features Cudi rapping several bars on-top of the track. You can listen to it over at the music blog fork/knife. While you’re at it, check out the rest of the site, because there are some really interesting songs and new artists featured on there.

Well that’s it for me tonight. Hope you enjoy the rest of your week, and for those of you catching any of the CMW festivities, I’ll see you around.

Cheers,
Max

Music Videos?

March 1st, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

The Dears

The Dears

Let’s face it; if you want to watch decent music videos these days, we have to resort to the internet. TV channels have withered down their selection of playlists to a mere 10, maybe 15 mainstream, top 40 hits – 50% of which has permanently been taken up by Miley Cyrus and the *Jonas Brothers.

For a while there, I still had a glimmer of hope at the end of each week when I would tune into Muchmusic’sThe Wedge; all TV-watching indie-lover’s hour of music video heaven, but now God knows what **horrific time it’s been pushed back to as it was continually pushed back in programming by the hour.

Today, I decided to browse the MuchAxs video playlists (out of sheer boredom…and potentially to watchAmerica’s Best Dance Crew – don’t judge me, it’s a good show!) and noticed some new videos that I hadn’t seen elsewhere. Here’s a little list:

The Dears – “Disclaimer”
This video is for the Montreal band’s stunning opener on their most recent release, Missiles. “Disclaimer”, directed by Geoff McLean, shows the band performing (in their usual intense seriousness) with simultaneous imagery of missiles and destruction. Beautiful and powerful, videos like this are still one of the reasons why The Dears are such an amazing band.

Winter Gloves – “Let Me Drive”
Directed by Benjamin Weinstein, The Winter Gloves’ video for “Let Me Drive” (from their debut album, About A Girl) follows a flipbook method, sort of similar to Land of Talk’s video for “Speak to Me Bones” two years ago, only with several flip books rather than just one pile of paper. Entertaining and visually lots of fun to watch – even the handclaps are in flip book motion!

Land of Talk – “Some Are Lakes”
I had never noticed that Land of Talk had released a video for this title track from their latest release till I had stumbled upon it on Muchmusic a while back. Directed by Jose Garcia, the video shows the band performing in an empty home, dressed in bright yellow raincoats. “Some Are Lakes” is a lovely video that is quite fitting to the laid back beauty of the song.

Other videos to check out:
Stars – “Midnight Coward” (directed by Ben Stieger-Levine)
Hexes & Ohs – “Wildfire” (directed by Stephane Fournier)
Young Rival – “Your Island”
Fembots – “My Hands Are A City” (directed by Ed Glass-Donnelly)

Kudos to Much for still having such great videos on their site…but you definitely lose all credit for airing a Paris Hilton marathon right now. So I guess we’re back to square one…hatred.

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody

* I realized in my blog post Kids Just Wanna Have Fun, I said that I would never mention the Jonas Brothers ever again on the Lamb. So I apologize for mentioning them again; I’m a terrible person.

** Correction: The Wedge airs every Friday night at 1:00 am. This is pending that no special programming preempts it’s air time to 3:00 am – which happens quite often. As early as 2-3 years ago, The Wedge aired at 11:00 pm.

The Way To Celebrate

October 14th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

The Winter Gloves

The Winter Gloves

I must admit, I don’t go to libraries often. But it’s not because I don’t like them, I just have a terribly embarrassing amount of money owed to the library. I’m surprised they don’t have wanted posters of me up by now. Anyway, if it weren’t for that, I’d totally be there everyday.

The only thing each year that gets me off my ass and actually want to go to the library though is the annual free concert at the North York Central Library. In the past two years, fantastic acts such as Final Fantasy, Ohbijou, Republic of Safety and The Bicycles have performed there and this year shall be no different as the line-up is as follows: Slim Twig, Masia One, The Winter Gloves and Gentleman Reg. The show is supposed to promote the amazing CD collections in our public libraries and trust me, if I could use my library card, I would use it primarily for borrowing CDs. The first time I looked at the CDs at North York Central, I found tons of Canadian gems I wanted to take home with me. I eventually caved in though, borrowing approximately 15 CDs using my friend’s library card. I begged her for her card. So mark those calendars down, my friends – November 15th, 8:00 p.m. FREE. But BEWARE as tickets are limited to 2 per person and usually run out quickly. These are the following places to run to for tickets: Soundscapes Records, North York Central, Toronto Reference, Albion, Northern District, Parkdale and Malvern.

If workshops are your thing, you may want to check these out as well (as copy and pasted from Soundscapes’ website):

In other news…

And to cap this blog off – want something to do next Monday? Feeling like a CD release party? Then go to Sebastien Grainger’s at the Supermarket, as that show will be the official starting point for the ex-DFA drummer’s fall tour in support of his upcoming self-titled record (out on October 21st, via Outside Music here in Canada and Saddle Creek in the states). If you want more than just music from Mr. Grainger, you’re in luck as he’s been writing a food blog for quite some time now. Check it out here!

Goodbye for now! Hope everyone’s Thanksgiving went well. As you read this, I will be having my left-over turkey meal!

Musically,
Melody
