M for Montréal is here!

November 18th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

M for Montreal

M for Montreal

M for Montreal’s fourth edition showcases some of Montréal’s finest acts and still mix brilliantly the anglo and franco music scenes from all around Canada. That’s the beauty of this event, it brings everyone together! The other good thing about M is that you can actually attend all the shows. It’s made for you to see all these bands (unlike Pop Montreal, for instance). Even if on some nights the showcases are at different places, there’s enough time to bike or walk from the Cabaret Juste Pour Rire on Saint-Laurent down to the Metropolis on Sainte-Catherine or the Café Campus. You even have time to grab some Schwartz on the way or enjoy the greatest vegetarian food at Paradis Végétarien on Saint-Denis and Mont-Royal (or, you know, get some poutine at la banquise on Rachel). So I planned your weekend for you:

Tomorrow November 19th catch Final Flash, The Luyas, Miracle Fortress, The Rural Alberta Advantage, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire, tickets are 17,75$ at the door. It all starts at 8 :30 and you can dance through the night with the Think About Life DJ set and « surprise guests » after the show. I can’t hide how freakin excited I am for this show. If you can only attend one showcase during M for Montréal, that’s the one.

On Friday November 20th, start the day right (if you have the three day pass, that is) with the M pour Martini cocktail with Mark Berube and The Few and Elisapie Isaac. The cocktail doubles as The Dears’ Valérie Jodoin Keaton’s Backstage book launch. Then head to the Cabaret for Two Hours Traffic, Silly Kissers, DD/MM/YYYY, Parlovr, Silver Starling and Le Matos. The M for Mystery afterparty will be a DJ set by Cadence Weapon and « very very special guests ».

On Saturday November 21st, it’s time to put these high school french classes to good use. The sélection franco showcase starts at 3 with Caracol followed by Québec’s Feist, Marie-Pierre Arthur. You can also catch Automelodi, latest hyped band and telus ad singers La Patère Rose, Géraldine (Don’t miss her! You won’t regret it. She’s the next Duchess Says of stage chaos, I swear) and pop duo Orange Orange. Later that night catch the M pour Metropolis show at the Metropolis (duh…) with Malajube, Melissa Auf der Maur, Champion and this year’s Polaris Music Prize winners Fucked Up. If you’re not tired from dancing around yet, there’s the M for Midnight afterparty at the SAT (don’t forget to RSVP to nightlife magazine beforehand).

The three day pass is insanely cheap (60$) and it gives you access to all the showcases, the M pour Martini cocktail, the panels, the afterparties AND M pour Metropolis. Careful though, there are only 150 available. Train and cheap bus tickets are still available for you Toronto people! I checked that for you because The Lamb always has your back. More information about ticket prices and schedules at http://mpourmontreal.com/EN/index.php.

Have a good weekend now!

Zut Alors,

Christine

Review: Two Hours Traffic & Spiral Beach @ Lee’s – Oct. 16, 2009

Two Hours Traffic

I have a confession to make. Whenever I take someone to a show based on my recommendation, and said person has never heard of the artist/band playing or listened to them before, I feel personally responsible if that person has a shitty time.  Maybe its because I feel like I’m wasting that person’s money, maybe its because I feel like I am failing to sell the band, but I feel guilty nonetheless. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case last Friday when I went with a friend to Lee’s Palace, to check out a bill with three bands that she had never heard of. I had interviewed bands at Lee’s before, but I had never attended an actual show at the venue, but was plenty impressed with the layout of the place. No matter where you are in the venue, you are guaranteed a decent vantage point of the stage.  We started sitting along the outside, before moving to stand in the lowered pit in the centre of the room.  The multiple gin and tonics also didn’t hurt.

Unfortunately for the packed crowd at Lee’s, the night got off to a weak start with the opening band, Charlottetown’sThe Danks. Despite sharing members with Two Hours Traffic, it was the voice of the band’s lead singer, Bryan Moore, that I felt ruined what might have been decent, albeit uninspired, garage rock tunes.  It was obvious that Moore was trying to pull off  his best Julian Casablancas impression, but his raggedy vocals fell rather flat.

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/meetthedanks

Luckily any bad tastes left in the crowds’ mouths were quickly forgotten, as soon as Toronto’s hometown darlingsSpiral Beach took to the stage, accompanied by their trademark orange pylons. The quartet are just entering their twenties, but the energy they display onstage, reminds me of a group of junior high kids that got into their parents’ liquor cabinets. The band recently released their third album, The Only Real Thing, which adds spaced- out synths and surf rock guitars to their frenetic, messy garage-punk.  It didn’t take long before the band’s female vocalist and keyboardist Maddy Wilde, who was wearing an upside down, cut-up tee with “Florida” written on it and a frilly black skirt, had the crowd willingly eating out of her hand. I think my friend who accompanied me to this show described Wilde’s look the best, calling her “Emily Haines, if she had got electrocuted.” And while its true the singer was highly entertaining to watch; and her hair is a few twigs short of a bird’s nest, she is certainly a vocal powerhouse, wailing like a banshee and hitting some impressively high notes. The rest of the band; vocalist and guitarist Airick Woodhead, bassist Dorian Wolf, and drummer Daniel Woodhead, were also on pointe in terms of  musicianship and enthusiasm. Spiral Beach played a solid set with plenty of songs from The Only Real Thing mixed in with older material, including the stellar “Zombie”, and left the audience more than pumped up for Two Hours Traffic.

This was the second-last show on their tour, and the Lee’s crowd was more than happy to give a heroes’ welcome to Two Hours Traffic. Hailing from the smallest province in Canada, the quartet are the musical equivalent of “The Little Engine That Could” – coming up from relative obscurity to headlining tours, appearing on the cover of national music magazines such as EXCLAIM!, and even receiving a 2008 Polaris Prize nomination for their sophomore album, Little Jabs. Two Hours Traffic are truly the type of band who prefer to let their music speak for itself. That music isn’t flashy either – just earnest, well-written power-pop songs free of pretentiousness with a characteristically laid-back Atlantic Canadian nature.

The public and critic consensus of the band’s latest album, Territory, is that Two Hours Traffic have discovered darker subject matter including alcoholism, religious beliefs, and conflicted relationships. But if you need proof that the band who once wrote a song cheekily-named “Backseat Sweetheart” has lost their sense of humour, look no further than a lyric like, “You say you don’t like the beach, that is fine, but there’s sand in your sheets.” While new songs like“Noisemaker” and “Territory” are TWT classics-in-waiting, cuts from Little Jabs like “Nighthawks” and the incredibly catchy “Stuck For The Summer”, got the biggest reactions from the crowd. After lead singer Liam Corcoran finished thanking everyone and their mothers, the band finished their set with the absolutely gorgeous“Jezebel”.  How do I describe just how good this song is? Let’s just say that if there was any justice in the world, this song would be played at weddings more often as the newly wed couples’ first dance.  One can only hope… After about five minutes of cheering, the band came back for a quick encore, but at that point it wasn’t even necessary.  It’s great to see a down-to-earth, hardworking band like Two Hours Traffic have this success, and I’m sure everyone in attendance that night at Lee’s went home hoping that there are nothing but even better days and more success to come for these guys.

The Singing Lamb Recommends…

October 15th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Dan Mangan

Dan Mangan

I officially deem Friday October 16th, Friday in-store madness. All three record stores – that is Soundscapes, Criminal Records and Sonic Boom – are holding fantastic in-store performances that’s great for the ears but even better for the wallets (i.e. FREE!). Good news: you can make it to all three! Bad news: there is no bad news; how is free music ever bad? (Don’t answer that.) Here’s a run-down of what your schedule should, and WILL look like:

5:00PM – Two Hours Traffic @ Soundscapes

East-coast pop perfection; the boys of Two Hours Traffic will be playing tunes from their latest release, Territory in what is rumoured to be an rare intimate, acoustic set. They will also be at Lee’s, headlining a show later that night with opening acts The Danks and Spiral Beach (of whom I’ll get to in two seconds…)

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/twohourstraffic

6:00PM – Dan Mangan @ Criminal Records

XM Verge Award winner for Artist of the Year – and deservingly so! Indie-folk singer-songwriter Dan Mangan may not have been on the tip of everyone’s tongues a few months ago but with prize in toll, he has definitely become the one to watch. Catch his fantastic set at Criminal Records then head down the street and catch him and Will Currie and the Country French at the Rivoli, if you can!

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/danmangan

7:00PM – Spiral Beach @ Sonic Boom

Local pop-rock darlings Spiral Beach will be rocking the basement of Sonic Boom with tracks from their new album, The Only Real Thing. They’ll also be opening for Two Hours Traffic, as previously mentioned!

So you’re welcome. I took the pleasure of planning out three hours of your life for you. Transportation? Bus, bike or feet – all methods work! I’ll probably be testing out the feet method so if you see a tired Lamb on the streets, give her some water or food. She’ll also accept money donations if you don’t have water/food. See you around and happy listening!

Contest: Two Hours Traffic

October 8th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Two Hours Traffic

Two Hours Traffic

How many times can you see Two Hours Traffic for free on October 16th? Correct answer: twice.

First off, the east-coast pop-rockers will be making a little stop at Soundscapes at 5PM for an intimate in-store performance. If you can’t make it to the band’s show at Lee’s later that night, I strongly suggest you go to Soundscapes then.

Second of all – you can win a pair of tickets from The Singing Lamb! Thanks to the kind folks at Against the Grain, we’ll be giving tickets away for next Friday’s show extravaganza also featuring Toronto’s very own Spiral Beach. All you have to do is email the Lamb (melodylau.620@gmail.com) with your name + phone number and a winner will be chosen on October 13th!

Good luck!

CD Review: Two Hours Traffic – Territory

October 2nd, 2009 | By: Alie Lavoie

Let me just start by saying that Territories, the newest album from Two Hours Traffic, has one glaringly obvious, out of place, three minute and twelve second flaw in the form of “Just Listen.” It’s uninspired and awkward and clichéd and frankly drags down what is otherwise a perfectly enjoyable album. I actually deleted the song off of my computer and Territories is so much better for it. In my opinion.
So I’ll give the band a break and forget about this isolated misstep.
Otherwise, the latest album from Two Hours Traffic is definitely worth your time and money, even if it didn’t move too far beyond familiar territory. The band is still holding true to that signature, poppy summer anthem sound. But they’ve added some fresh and exciting things into the mix, too. Take, for example, the (instrumentally) Spoon-esque “Wicked Side”, a subtle song that uses horns in a smart, restrained way and shows that THT can do more than straightforward pop. “Happiness Burns” is a muffled and equally restrained bit of awesome. Another notable stylistic progression is “Drop Alcohol”, with its shoegaze-tinged guitars and slick, simple percussion. “Painted Halo” is another standout track, with a slightly harder edge and an opening that immediately perks the ear. The song maintains its momentum with the expected, masterful Traffic hooks and melodies laid over unexpectedly pessimistic lyrics like, “Darling, are you drunk enough to kiss me?”
Territories is an obvious step forward from the boys of Two Hours Traffic, showcasing a maturation in sound with tighter and more inventive songwriting styles. These songs will be welcomed by fans with open arms and open mouths ready to sing along.

News Update!

Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor

As previously reported, Regina Spektor’s new album, Far, will be released on June 22nd. Click here to listen to a new track from Far, “Laughing With”. Not as upbeat and cheerful as we’re used to hearing from a track like “Fidelity” but “Laughing With” is a beautiful, sweet tune with fantastic lyrics, more reminiscent of songs like “Ode to Divorce” or “Summer in the City”. Definitely a huge thumbs up and I’m terribly excited to hear the rest of the album in June!

Patrick Wolf will be at the Mod Club on June 17th, as part of NXNE, with Living Things, the Plastiscines, and Jaguar Love. Tickets will be $20.00 and this is an all-ages show. Doors will be at 7:00 pm, so this will be an early show.

Fever Ray will be at the Kool Haus on October 2nd.

NXEW interviews Two Hours TrafficClick here to read!

The Sounds have a new song out, entitled “No One Sleeps When I’m Awake”. Click here to download!

According to Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees’ MySpace, the Halifax band will be playing an all-ages show on June 20th (during NXNE; they will also be playing on June 19th as part of the festivities). This is just a huge hunch, but I have a feeling this may be for the next edition of Daps Duo’s all-ages series, seeing as how they’re holding an all-ages show on the same day. Call me crazy…anyway; this is just speculation on my part. We’ll just have to wait for confirmation.

Afie Jurvanen, who’s backed up for artists such as Feist, The Stills and Hayden, has finally announced a solo album. Under the name, Bahamas, his upcoming record Pink Strat will be released on July 6th. Here’s the tracklisting:

Pink Strat
01 “Lonely Loves”
02 “Hockey Teeth”
03 “Southern Drawl”
04 “For Good Reason”
05 “You’re Bored, I’m Old”
06 “Sunshine Blues”
07 “Already Yours”
08 “What’s Worse?”
09 “Let The Good Times Roll”
10 “Try, Tried, Trying”
11 “Till the Morning”
12 “Whole, Wide, World”

Also, watch out for Bahamas at the Dakota Tavern on August 6th.

The Music Gallery will be celebrating their Summer Courtyard Series, starting next month. Here’s a rundown of all the fun!

Last but not least, don’t forget to catch Rah Rah at the Boat tonight and El Mocambo on Tuesday! Got plans already and won’t be able to catch them? It’s okay as the band’s MySpace indicates that they’ll be back at the El Mocambo on June 18th, for NXNE!

Happy listening!

No Advances

Two Hours Traffic

Two Hours Traffic

A few weeks ago, as I was walking to the bus stop, I noticed a field of frost. I didn’t think much of it then, but that image is the only thing I can think of now, as I’m in my freezing room bundled under several layers of blankets. It’s getting cold here in Toronto – which always brings back a nostalgic memory of last December, when I saw Broken Social Scene for the first time.

Interestingly enough, I will have to endure another cold evening for Broken Social Scene next month when I see them on November 27th at the Sound Academy. And I was just about to purchase tickets to the second night too when I read that Two Hours Traffic will be playing an all-ages gig at the Whippersnapper Gallery on the 28th. Nice difference from the slew of Lee’s Palace shows they’ve been doing, so if you’ve been dying to check them out but you’re unfortunately under-aged, I highly suggest this show!

In a whole whack-load of other news…

My favourite Swedish songstress, Lykke Li has an alternative video for her single, “Breaking it Up”, similar to the un-official video for “I’m Good I’m Gone”. As I’ve mentioned countless times on my old blog, you must listen to this girl! Unfortunately, her upcoming gig at the Mod Club is sold out, so if you’re one of the lucky ones holding a ticket, please let me know how the show goes!

Speaking of new videos, Beck also has a new one out for “Modern Guilt”

According to Stillepost and Chart, Sailboats are White are calling it quits after 7 years.

One of my favourite movies last year, Once, is apparently turning into a Broadway. Hmm…

Need some reading to do? Read this!

That’ll be it for now, sorry for the lack of posts this weekend!! That will never happen again!

Musically,
Melody
