What Are You Doing This Week, Toronto?

May 2nd, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Monday May 3, Caribou @ Phoenix

Start your week off with the electronic-pop tunes of Dan Snaith a.k.a. Polaris Prize-winning musician Caribou. With a new record out, entitled Swim, catch Snaith and opener, the much hyped-about Toro Y Moi at the Phoenix. $15.00/All Ages

Tuesday May 4, Frightened Rabbit @ Opera House

From what I’ve heard, Scottish indie-rockers Frightened Rabbit put on a hell of a show. If you missed out the last time they were in town at the Horseshoe with The Antlers (who will also be back in June, opening for The National at Massey Hall), you must go and see these guys, along with Maps & Atlases at the Opera House. $15.00/19+

Wednesday May 5, Stars @ Mod Club

For those fortunate enough to nab tickets within the first few minutes before it sold out, this show will be a Stars-preview event where fans will be treated to new material from their upcoming release The Five Ghosts. My inner Stars fan just squealed a little (i.e. a lot). SOLD OUT/All Ages

Thursday May 6, The Luyas @ Drake

Joanna Newsom meets Bell Orchestre – probably because majority of the members from this band are also in the latter – The Luyas’ quirky orchestral melodies are fun, off-beat and catchy as hell. Catch them live as they hopefully test out some new tunes from their yet-to-be-announced upcoming release. $5.00/19+

Basia Bulat, The Luyas @ Trinity St. Paul’s – Jan. 16, 2010

Certain musicians and voices just belong in a church; Basia Bulat is among those who fit perfectly in such atmospheres. Saturday’s show at Trinity St. Paul’s in Toronto saw a line of people waiting in a line that went all the way around the block; impressive for Bulat who played at the Music Gallery, another church but half the size, just two years prior.

Opening the night were the Luyas from Montreal. This super-band of sorts is filled with many familiar faces including members of Bell Orchestre and Torgnat. The band’s sound is almost identical to the highly instrumented intricacies of Bell Orchestre but paired with the quirky Joanna Newsom-esque vocals of lead singer Jessie Stein. Stein’s voice, at times, falls out of place with the grandeur of lush horns and strings though. Musically, The Luyas are spectacular and intriguing; definitely a band that takes several listens to adjust to but is worth the patience. I don’t particularly understand their pairing with Bulat, as it’s not really the same type of audience but it was nice nonetheless to see them play.

Basia Bulat, celebrating the release of her new album Heart Of My Own, played mostly from that release, but still enchanting the audience. The thing about all of Bulat’s tunes is that they have a sense of comfort and joy; every track sounds phenomenal with a quality about it that makes you comfortable tapping your foot along to. Bulat, accompanied by a full band including brother/drummer, Bobby Bulat sounded the best I’ve ever heard them. The band’s captivating folk sound filled up the space beautifully and Bulat’s voice, with and without a mic, hit every surface of the church with a sweetness and amazement in every note. If you ever want to capture a fulfilling Basia Bulat set, go to a church.

M for Montréal is here!

November 18th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

M for Montreal

M for Montreal

M for Montreal’s fourth edition showcases some of Montréal’s finest acts and still mix brilliantly the anglo and franco music scenes from all around Canada. That’s the beauty of this event, it brings everyone together! The other good thing about M is that you can actually attend all the shows. It’s made for you to see all these bands (unlike Pop Montreal, for instance). Even if on some nights the showcases are at different places, there’s enough time to bike or walk from the Cabaret Juste Pour Rire on Saint-Laurent down to the Metropolis on Sainte-Catherine or the Café Campus. You even have time to grab some Schwartz on the way or enjoy the greatest vegetarian food at Paradis Végétarien on Saint-Denis and Mont-Royal (or, you know, get some poutine at la banquise on Rachel). So I planned your weekend for you:

Tomorrow November 19th catch Final Flash, The Luyas, Miracle Fortress, The Rural Alberta Advantage, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire, tickets are 17,75$ at the door. It all starts at 8 :30 and you can dance through the night with the Think About Life DJ set and « surprise guests » after the show. I can’t hide how freakin excited I am for this show. If you can only attend one showcase during M for Montréal, that’s the one.

On Friday November 20th, start the day right (if you have the three day pass, that is) with the M pour Martini cocktail with Mark Berube and The Few and Elisapie Isaac. The cocktail doubles as The Dears’ Valérie Jodoin Keaton’s Backstage book launch. Then head to the Cabaret for Two Hours Traffic, Silly Kissers, DD/MM/YYYY, Parlovr, Silver Starling and Le Matos. The M for Mystery afterparty will be a DJ set by Cadence Weapon and « very very special guests ».

On Saturday November 21st, it’s time to put these high school french classes to good use. The sélection franco showcase starts at 3 with Caracol followed by Québec’s Feist, Marie-Pierre Arthur. You can also catch Automelodi, latest hyped band and telus ad singers La Patère Rose, Géraldine (Don’t miss her! You won’t regret it. She’s the next Duchess Says of stage chaos, I swear) and pop duo Orange Orange. Later that night catch the M pour Metropolis show at the Metropolis (duh…) with Malajube, Melissa Auf der Maur, Champion and this year’s Polaris Music Prize winners Fucked Up. If you’re not tired from dancing around yet, there’s the M for Midnight afterparty at the SAT (don’t forget to RSVP to nightlife magazine beforehand).

The three day pass is insanely cheap (60$) and it gives you access to all the showcases, the M pour Martini cocktail, the panels, the afterparties AND M pour Metropolis. Careful though, there are only 150 available. Train and cheap bus tickets are still available for you Toronto people! I checked that for you because The Lamb always has your back. More information about ticket prices and schedules at http://mpourmontreal.com/EN/index.php.

Have a good weekend now!

Zut Alors,

Christine
