Local musicians help raise money for Japan with benefit concert

April 12th, 2011 | By: Amanda Macchia

In order to raise funds for the thousands of victims of the Japanese tsunami, Toronto’s indie rock community has joined forces with several sponsors for the Help Japan benefit show taking place Friday April 15 at The Garrison (located 1197 Dundas Street West).

With a required minimum donation of $5 at the door, Help Japan organizer Akira Alemany (of Toronto-based Modernboys Moderngirls) saw his this event and his position in the local music industry as a way to do something to help the people of Japan.

“As musicians the one thing we can do is play and organize a show,” said Alemany. “So we
made a couple of calls and got the Help Japan benefit started.”

Warner Bros. and Virgin Mobile, along with local restaurants including Drift Bar and Stampede, are just some of the sponsors who have donated prize packs and gift certificates to help raise funds during the event’s silent auction.

“We’ve been amazingly lucky to have received help from so many directions,” said Alemany. “So many people have lent their time in helping organize this event.”

In addition to a performance by Alemany’s band Modernboys Moderngirls, attendees can also look forward to sets by Make Your Exit, The Elwins, and HotKid. The show’s MC will be Toronto comedian Julia Hladkowicz, and you’d be right to expect a few surprise guests.

“What makes this event so easy to say ‘yes’ to is simple,” said Alemany. “You’re going to have an insanely good time and it’s for an important cause.”

There will also be a 50-50 draw, a bake sale, and the York University Japanese International Students Association, which has already raised thousands of dollars with an origami paper crane campaign, will be folding paper cranes at The Garrison for every dollar donated.

“It’s everything and the kitchen sink,” said Alemany.

Doors at 8:00/$5 minimum donation. All proceeds go to the Red Cross of Japan via the Canadian Red Cross.

The Elwins complete record, announce dates

February 15th, 2011 | By: Amanda Macchia

The Elwins - Photo by Brendan Rankin

The quirky Newmarket/Toronto trio known as The Elwins have had a busy few months.

Matt Sweeney (vocals, guitar), Feurd Ian Robertson Moore (guitar, bass), and Travis Stokl (drums) began the recording process of their new album back in October, traveling to Philadelphia and Seattle to begin work. They are now finishing up mixing the album and will be mastering the recordings next week. The Elwins plan on shopping the finished product around to labels soon.

After hearing a sneak peek at some of the new tracks, it’s safe to say that The Elwins have maintained their clean pop sound and developed their song-writing and instrumentation to new professional heights.

The band is off to New York City next month, playing shows with the likes of Only Son, Sweet Thing, and The Lines, after which they’ll be heading to Texas for SXSW to play what Sweeney calls a “multitude of acoustic and electric shows throughout the festival,” with exact days and venues still awaiting announcement.

For those of you in the city, The Elwins will be playing an afternoon set at The Toronto Institute for the Enjoyment of Music on March 10 as part of Canadian Music Week, and as soon as tomorrow (February 16) at Supermarket with Behind Sapphire. Doors @ 9:00, PWYC.

And take a look at the Southern Souls video for one of The Elwins’ new tracks “Sittin’ Pretty”:

Some News…

October 2nd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Before anything else, we’d like to boggle your mind with these two amazing music videos that came out recently:

(1) Maylee Todd’s “Aerobics in Space”

(2) Forest City Lovers’ “Tell Me Cancer”

IN OTHERS NEWS

Born Ruffians recently started their North American tour in support of sophomore album Say It. Not long after this slew of American gigs, the Toronto quartet will be heading out to Europe come November. This week, their latest Daytrotter session finally surfaced to the world wide web. Not only that, the band also released a new EP called Plinky Plonk. Lead singer Luke Lalonde wrote in their blog that the EP included “songs that didn’t make it on the record, an alternate version of one that did and some other odds and ends”. You can get a hold of it digitally, and there will be physical copies from the shows.

Another band that’s also jetting off across the border is Keswick, Ontario’s The Elwins. Bound for quaint Philadelphia, PA, the band leaves tonight to work on their first album with Bill Moriarty, who’s been heavily involved with most Dr. Dog records, and Dr. Dog’s Scott McMicken himself. Shortly afterward, the boys will head to Seattle, WA to do the actual recording at Bear Creek Studio with producer/mixer Ryan Hadlock, who’s also worked with The Strokes, Islands, and Ra Ra Riot among others. Something tells me it’s going to be a good’un. The Elwins also promise to keep us all updated on their blog.

Happy weekend!

Southern Souls and Musical Friendships

September 15th, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

The Elwins' End-of-Summer Party (photo by Kim Pourazar )

Friendship is not uncommon between bands. Particularly in Toronto, everyone in this so-called music scene is connected in some way – it’s almost incestuous. And through such friendships sometimes emerge great collaborations, side projects, and amazing shared line-ups.

Remember that awesome End-of-Summer Party we suggested you should trek to Newmarket for? Tokyo Police Club’s Graham Wright shares with us his thoughts and impressions of that night and raves about pals The Elwins. After all, we all get by with a little help from friends.

When I was growing up in Newmarket, I went to exactly one local show. It was the standard multi band bill, featuring the standard mix of punk, hardcore, and ska bands, attended by what I assume was the standard crowd. A kid sitting on the curb outside, mohawked and adorned with chains and safety pins, looked up as we walked past and yelled “faggots!”

Wait, what? I thought that these were supposed to be the outcasts, coming together in a safe place. Besides, this guy’s pants were way tighter than ours. Anyway, we never went to another show, and that was my last impression of the Newmarket music scene.

Which is why I was so impressed by the crowd and the scene at The Elwins End Of Summer Party at the White Rabbit. It was a great example of how much things have changed, for the better.

Overzealous security and inadequate alcohol stocks notwithstanding, the White Rabbit is a bona fide rock and roll venue, and The Elwins packed it. The crowd’s numbers swelled throughout the night, peaking during The Elwins set. They danced, they clapped, they sang along, and they had an awesome time. And even though I felt uncomfortably old in a room full of enthusiastic high schoolers, it did my heart good to see such an explosion of warmth and joy in the old town.

Oh yeah, and The Elwins? Well, as usual, they were incredible, playing a mix of old and new tunes with exuberance befitting the celebratory atmosphere.

So, in closing, way to go Elwins! Way to go Newmarket! Hooray!!!

(review by Graham Wright)

Another well-put-together show is the Southern Souls showcase at the El Mocambo this coming Friday, Sept 17th. And incidentally, The Elwins are playing along with Make Your Exit, Teenage Kicks, and Cam Malcolm and the Owls.

See Facebook event.

What’s Going On?

August 23rd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean Toronto is running out of things to do and shows to go to.

MONDAY, Aug 23
The Gladstone’s monthly “Tweetup” is part of a fundraiser for Public Displays of Affection‘s EP exhibition. They will be showcasing performances by This Month Only, composed of a Torontonian sound artist and a Danish video artist, and Allie Hughes, who we love @The Gladstone’s Melody Bar, 19+, PWYC.

WEDNESDAY, Aug 25
Want to hit up an early Halloween party in the summer? Go check out Rich Aucoin
‘s EP release of Public Publication @Tiger Bar, 19+, $10. The Facebook event blurb claims that due to the small size of the venue, “this show will SELL OUT faster than toothpaste at a meth lab, so get there early”.
But before that, go catch The Killers‘ frontman Brandon Flowers for no cost at all @MTV Live, All-ages, 5pm. FREE. I dare you show up in your Halloween costumes and outdo Flowers’ eye-makeup. DO IT. Then take pictures, and send them to us.

THURSDAY, Aug 26
As part of her Eastern Canada tour, indie folk musician Andrea Gauster will be performing
in support of the release of her second full-length We’re Not Lost at Kensington Market along with local performances by Graydon James & the Young Novelists, Kevin Miles Wilson and Tronic @The Supermarket, $10. Facebook.
Or… venture down eastward and catch Lullabye Arkestra playing with Titan and Hot Kid @The Garrison, 19+, $10. Facebook.

FRIDAY, Aug 27
To mark the end of summer, go party with The Elwins in Newmarket! (You can always make that drive/VIVA ride.) They will be playing alongside Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club) & The Good Times Band, The Expos, Paper Fortunes, and Bon Chapeau. All the fun happens @The White Rabbit (185 Main St. South, Newmarket, ON), All-ages, $8 (in advance)/$10 (at the door). Facebook.

The Singing Lamb Recommends…

January 16th, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

When I was in my final year of high school, not too long ago, I wrote in my school paper about my little trip to Newmarket to see this band called The Elwins. My memory fails to recall how I stumbled upon them; I’m guessing it’s from one of those random MySpace clicking sprees that I do every so often when life seems too banal. I remember their EP release was on a Good Friday, and the parental units almost did not let me leave. But I was adamant, and I left home in the dust. I felt like a rebel.

Their EP release party was held at a youth recreation centre, which oddly piqued my interest for some reason. (At the time, I wrote a lot about shows held in unconventional venues. For one of the issues, I had also featured the first Daps show at Rolly’s Garage.) Greg Alsop, drummer of music sensation Tokyo Police Club and the night’s emcee, called the EP release party “the hippest thing that ever happened in Newmarket since 1997.” The master of ceremonies added that the only other equally hip thing that happened in this town was “the time Sloan’s tour bus broke down in front of Upper Canada Mall.”

Overall, it was a night of comedy and great tunes – definitely worth the trip to suburbia. If you get the chance, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of their self-titled EP. It is packed with five pop gems you are sure to love instantly! Tracks like “Dear, Oh My” and “Larry Pastorus” draw definite similarities to the cheerful pop-rock melodies of acts like friends the Bicycles and Ruby Coast. Guaranteed to paint a smile on anyone’s face.

The band is primarily made up of guitarist/vocalist Matt Sweeney and drummer Travis Stokl, with the new addition of third member, bassist Feurd. The band is also searching for a fourth member to round out the lineup.

Catch them live this Sunday at Wavelength’s 496th show, in partnership with No Shame! They will be playing with Tyson and the Trepids and Whale Tooth! And while you’re at it, check out an interview we did with them a few months ago!

Resonancity’s “Bands To Chase 2010″ – The Singing Lamb’s Picks!

January 16th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Sheezer

Sheezer

I had the pleasure of partaking in Resonancity’s “Bands To Chase 2010″ list recently where we got to pick bands we think are going to be big in the new year. Here are links to all the lists:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Here are my official picks:

The Balconies – If the end of 2009 was any indication of things for the Balconies, 2010 should be the year they take over the music scene. This Ottawa power-pop trio (recently relocated to Toronto) comprised of brother-sister duo Jacquie and Stephen Neville and drummer Liam Jaeger released their self-titled album late last year to much praise and admiration from local bloggers and music fans. Bursting with catchy melodies, dynamic vocals and a maturity that some bands on their third or fourth album strive to achieve, things can only go up for these guys in the new year.

Diamond Rings – John O’Regan (The D’Urbervilles) a.k.a. Diamond Rings was the toast of the local music scene, international artists (opening for La Roux) and even Pitchfork last year with his breakout YouTube hit “All Yr Songs”. But the video and the song are only a little sneak peek into the spectacle that’s to come. In the midst of finishing up his debut album, Diamond Rings will finally release his much-anticipated album this year and if his live material is a sign of anything, it will be incredible.

Novels – This super-band made up of Will Currie, Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club), Luke Lalonde (Born Ruffians), Dean Marino (Ex-po) and Jason Sadlowski (Jay Sad) is basically destined for success. Though the band won’t be selling their debut EP in stores (the band has opted to just let people download it for free online), their music will undoubtedly reach a wide audience and gain lots of press, as it has already in the blogosphere.

The Elwins - This Newmarket duo of Travis Stokl and Matthew Sweeney are certainly an up-and-coming act to watch for this year. With a full-length on its way, the Elwins’ brand of sugary sweet pop-rock is comparable to The Strokes or friends, Tokyo Police Club and The Bicycles. It’s definitely cheerful and a ray sunshine into your ears.

Sheezer – This all-girl Weezer cover band debuted on New Years Eve at the Tranzac and literally blew everyone away, even if you weren’t a Weezer fan. The band’s made up of Dana Snell (The Bicycles), Laura Barrett (The Hidden Cameras), Magali Meagher (The Phonemes), Robin Hatch (ex-Sports The Band) and Alysha Haugen and even though they don’t take any particularly unique approaches to covering hits like “Buddy Holly” or “My Name is Jonas” they do a hell of a job rockin’ them out. Fingers crossed for more shows soon! If they wanted to, I think Sheezer can take over the world; one Weezer fan at a time.

Let’s Chat: The Elwins

October 29th, 2009 | By: Carmel Garvez

It was Saturday night in Toronto. The city was more alive than usual. Thousands of people of all ages were walking around, teeming with obvious excitement. It was the fourth annual Nuit Blanche, and everyone was out and about, feasting their eyes on the many different art installations and exhibits that were open all night long.

Right in the middle of Zone C, along the western strip of Queen Street, is The Drake. Blurry words or sentences – perhaps even forming to tell a story – were being projected on the front of the building. There was also a giant, blue, sperm-shaped water fountain that makes music by the hotel patio. Apparently, it’s called a hydraulophone.

This is where I met up with Travis Stokl and Matthew Sweeney, collectively known as The Elwins. It’s the duo’s fourth time playing the Underground, the hip west-end basement venue. The Elwins have released their self-titled EP this past April, and they also recently rocked a two-night charity show in Newmarket over the summer with fellow York Region-natives, Ruby Coast and Tokyo Police Club.

I was definitely looking forward to getting to know these lads more. However, the all-night art revelry did not quite work out in our favour, much to my chagrin. For most of the interview, we ended up walking to and fro The Drake, which caused a lot of confusion for both parties. Unfortunately, the loud environment we were in did not help either. The boisterous merrymaking brought about by that night had drowned much of our conversation. The only thing I was able to make out from my not-so handy-dandy audio recorder was when Matt and Travis thought they saw a member of Sloan standing a few feet from us. I told them to say hi. They didn’t.

Luckily, Matt and Travis did not hesitate to respond when I sent them the follow-up questions via e-mail:

The Singing Lamb: Who are you, and what do you do?

We are The Elwins. We write, record and preform jubilant gyrating jingles for the young and old alike.

What’s the story behind your band name?

It’s sort of a long story but we watched the movie Willow and ended up with our name.

How would you describe your music?

Lazy boy rock/jazz mixed with a bit of surf jolt.  This is probably one of the hardest questions to answer for any band, but you get it…right?

How long have you known each other? How did you two meet?

We’ve known each other for almost six years now.  We met in high school.  Our first interaction took place outside of  Ms.Carpenter’s english class.  We spoke about and listened to The Flaming Lips.   We didn’t start writing music until recently.

Who has the biggest influence on your sound?

We influence each others writing styles more than anyone else.  However some popular artists we take influence from are Burt Bacharach,  The Beatles, The Beach Boys and R.Stevie Moore .

When was the last time you purchased an album? What was it?

A few days ago Travis picked up the new album by Air.

What’s your favourite song to perform?

It changes all the time but usually it’s the newest song we’ve written.  Right now it’s a tie between our new arrangement of Squid Eyes and our new song that is yet to be named.

Favourite cover(s) to play?

Yeah! We tend to play a lot of covers when we perform acoustically.  A couple of our favorites are This Diamond Ring by GARY LEWIS & THE PLAYBOYS and Everyday by VETIVER .

What inspired you to pick up an instrument and make your own music?

To be honest, I don’t remember. It just happened, kind of like how you pick up a spoon to eat cereal. It just felt right and it worked.

Describe your favourite concert memory.

Once we had a gig at a Polish Hall in Oshawa.  It happened to be the headliner’s last show who we’d never heard beforehand.  They really rocked it. I think they were called White Light Heat.

What made you decide to pursue music full-time after high school?

I was more interested in self-educating than pursuing the more traditional routes of education after high school. The increase of my free time in combination with Travis’s didaskaleinophobia lead us to our decision to go full time with music.

When shall the public expect an Elwins full-length?

Hopefully next year sometime

What have you been up to lately?

We’ve been writing a lot of music, working out, learning magic tricks, harvesting wild edibles, etc…

What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

Matt: Chocolate chip cookie dough but lately I’ve been adding a bit of moose tracks to the mix.  Chocolate Cool Hemp is really good too.

Travis: Cookie dough anything is great.  I stay away from mint.

If you were a singing animal, what would you be?

Matt: black capped chickadee

Travis: dog

Last words?

Magic is still cool, don’t forget it.

Travis was also generous enough to recommend some tunes:
