Steve Aoki

Steve Aoki is a rock star.

No, not in the conventional guitar-playing, substance-abusing, groupie-fucking sense. But there’s no denying that the Los Angeles-born DJ, and founder of the tastemaking label Dim Mak Records (home to everyone from Armand Van Helden to MSTRKRFT), is grounded in punk and rock roots. Last week, Aoki told Toronto’s NOW Magazine that when he was in college, he threw DIY shows in his own living room, and everyone from Dillinger Escape Plan to Isis to At the Drive-In played there. That’s pretty legit street credentials for a man whose name – for better or worse – has become synonymous with hipster culture (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, than please watch this), and has remixed thoroughly non-punk rock artists like All American Rejects (gag) and Good Charlotte (double gag). That’s too say nothing of his latest, perhaps ill-advised project with The Bloody Beetroots’ Bob Rifo – a screamo duo under the not-so-clever alias of Rifoki (obviously both men missed the memo about screamo going the way of the dodo).

But watching him thrashing around onstage, throwing his sweaty body into the crowd, and spraying champagne all over an eager dancefloor at This Is London last Friday, it was clear that Aoki was the biggest rock star in the room.

And why not? It was certainly more interesting than watching another guy press play on a laptop while twisting and fiddling with some knobs. Coming on shortly before midnight to a chopped-up take on the Lion King theme song, it took no time for Aoki to whip the packed crowd into a frenzy, as he did a set that considered half of his original material and half remixes. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a huge fan of his original material – I find a lot of it just repetitive, boring electro-house (save the whiplash-inducing, Bloody Beetroots-assisted “Warp 1977″). But where Aoki shines is with his club-killing remixes – he’s never met a song that he didn’t like, and more often than not, his remixes transform the originals into something that sounds a hundred times more massive and anthemic. I first heard about Aoki on the Weird Science remix of Bloc Party’s “Banquet”, which featured none other than Canada’s own Peaches, singing/rapping over Kele Okereke’s vocals and spiky post-punk guitars. More recently though, he turned out a stellar remix of everyone’s current favourite rap song (even T-Swift – watch this and wait till the 3:45 mark), with Drake’s “Forever”. Aoki takes Drake, Lil Wayne and Kanye’s parts over a sped-up electro backbeat, while keeping those horns blasts that sound like air raid sirens, building the beat to a fevered pitch, before slowing the whole thing for Eminem’s to drop his downright sinister-sounding verse. The DJ also dropped his reworked version of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit Of Happiness”, a song that might just be good enough to get me listening to Top 40 radio again.

Yet the highlight of the night by far was the energy that Aoki put into his performance, which carried on strong until four in the morning. Being caught up in a feverish mass of grinding and moshing bodies, it was easy to forget that I was at a swanky club in Toronto’s entertainment district, and not some punk show in someone’s basement (albeit a very nice basement, with wooden floors, brick walls and spacious ceilings). Too many DJs are content to phone-in their sets, without putting any real effort or enthusiasm, but Aoki is the real deal.

Smile, It’s Wednesday

Smile, it's Wednesday!

Smile, it's Wednesday!

Ladies and gentlemen, its Wednesday. Which means of course, we’re halfway through the week. But in case you’ve been swamped with mid-terms this week and your workload is steadily accumulating with no end in sight, here is some news for you that’ll hopefully make the rest of the week go faster.

Best. Mashups. Ever. Those were the three words that spilled out of my mouth after listening to the tracks posted on A Plus D’s MySpace. The San Francisco duo consists of Adrian and the Mysterious D, and their mashups ingeniously pair songs that you might not expect together. Kanye’s “Gold Digger” and Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony”? Genius. Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and the obviously Joy Division-inspiredShe Wants Revenge’s “Tear You Apart”? Slightly more predictable, but good nonetheless. But the standout, and probably the best mashup I’ve heard in recent months, is “Stardust Kids”. Can you guess what two tracks that might combine? I’ll save you the guessing and tell you that it takes David Bowie’s classic “Lady Stardust” and layers it on top of the beat from MGMT’s “Kids”. In other MGMT-related news, apparently they get played on commercial radio these days. Who knew? Certainly not me, as I’ve been living under a rock the last few months as far as commercial radio is concerned.

Speaking of hope for commercial radio, I recently discovered Alan Cross and his The Ongoing History of New Music program (which you can download for free as podcasts on iTunes) while fiddling with the stereo dial at work, which features some pretty damn good music. Thanks to Cross, I was tipped off to Dublin’s Fight like Apes and this story about a false scare in a Memphis airport as the result of a This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb sticker. You can listen to new episodes on Sunday nights at 8pm on Toronto’s 102.1 FM The Edge. Cross was recently interviewed in an article about fighting Internet piracy, which you can read here.

All you club kids out there, get out your glowsticks and prepare your most ridiculous outfits, because the club show to end all club shows is coming to Toronto in April. Ticket prices and whether or not this show is going to be all-ages or not have yet to be officially confirmed, but according to Dim Mak Records’ website, the lineup set to appear (and surely sellout) at The Guvernment on April 9th includes Steve Aoki, Crookers, The Bloody Beetroots and MSTRKRFT. In the words of the immortal Barney Stinson, this show has massive potential to be legen-wait for it-DARY.

Beck has a new B-side off the soon-to-be-released deluxe edition of Modern Guilt, a stripped-down tune called “Necessary Evil”, which reminds me a lot of his little-heard “Mexico”. Listen to the track here.

Here’s a show you don’t want to miss: The CoastThe DiablerosOh No Forest Fires! and Ryan Masters are playing at The Horseshoe this Saturday. Four awesome acts for ten bucks – it doesn’t get much better than that. I have to say I’ve been listening to the new ONFF! album, The War On Geometry lately, and if you want to hear a great garage rock album with pop sensibilities and catchy hooks then I’d seriously recommend it.

Halfway through the week everyone, we can make it!

Cheers,
Max

News Update!

January 30th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Coachella

Coachella

I usually love living in Toronto but every year there are a few events that just made me wish I was elsewhere – Lollapalooza, South By Southwest, any European festival…and Coachella.

As you may all know by now (by the various news reports from Stereogum and Pitchfork) that Coachella has officially announced their line-up for the 3-day festival held in Indio, California. I’m not even going to bother naming them all, so here’s the list! Damn you, California! It’s bad enough that you have unlimited sunny weather, but now this?!

Pitchfork also reports that Edmonton rapper/ex-Pitchfork writer, Cadence Weapon (a.k.a. Rollie Pemberton) has released his new album Separation Anxiety on his website as a pay-what-you-can deal, a la Radiohead. The album is basically comprised of remixes of other bands’ songs and a live cover of Chad Vangaalen’s “Mini TV’s” with the help of Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy (fantastic track; was originally released/played on a CBC Radio performance a while back). To download it either for free or for a charge, go here!

Speaking of Final Fantasy, Owen Pallett has a new video out for the fantastical track, “Horsetail Feathers” from his latest release, Plays to Please. Watch the official video here! And for an unofficial, but awesome live performance of it, click here!!

The Arcade Fire has a new song out called “Lenin” that will be part of the already amazing compilation, Dark Was The Knight. Stream the song here and read more about the compilation here.

Lenka and Meghan Hamilton will be at the Drake Hotel on Monday February 2nd. I knew about this show for a while now but had failed to mention it because I hadn’t listened to Lenka till last night…I love her now. Sorry for the late announcement! To listen to the Australian songstress yourself, check out her MySpace!

Andrew Bird was on Letterman recently. If you missed it, watch the clip here! His new album, Noble Beast is out now and he’ll be in town at the Elizabeth Theatre on April 3rd. Tickets are still on sale!

DJ extraordinaire, Steve Aoki will be stopping by as part of his tour, but not necessarily in Toronto. His two Ontario stops will include Richmond Hill on March 4th (Nava) and London on March 5th (Club Mansion).

Jon Rae Fletcher will be playing an in-store at Criminal Records on March 14th during CMW. Time is TBA though. I’ll keep you posted!

The Ting Tings’ show, as part of CMW, will be at the Mod Club on March 14th as well.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band will be at The Air Canada Centre on May 7th. Prices are yet to be announced but it won’t be cheap.

Just a reminder that Neko Case tickets for her pair of April shows in Toronto are gradually selling out, so hurry up if you want to go! Opening for Case on both nights will be Crooked Fingers.

That’s it for now!

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody
