Let’s Chat: Spiral Beach
October 26th, 2009 | By: Carmel Garvez

Spiral Beach
One Friday afternoon, I met up with Daniel Woodhead of Spiral Beach under the “giant beatle thinger” at Sonic Boom. The band was set to have an in-store performance that evening before their show with Two Hours Traffic at Lee’s Palace, across the street. We looked for the quietest area of the store, which ended up being the Gospel section, where Daniel told me about their on-going tour, the new album, a brief history of Bollywood music, Skunt, and everything that fell in between.
Singing Lamb: You’ve been touring for quite some time now. How is life on the road?
Daniel Woodhead: It’s good! This is kind of the end of the first part of the Canadian tour. And we’re gonna go down to New York next week and then Montreal after that. And we get to go to Europe in November, which is going to be amazing.
Do you have any favourite stops?
Daniel: We really like playing in New York. It’s definitely one of the most exciting places to be. But I think, on this tour, Saskatoon was really amazing.
Really?
Daniel: Yeah, it was definitely the best show – the highlight. And Kingston was also really good… All over – it’s always really random. Sometimes we go somewhere that we’ve been, like six times, and there’d be nobody there. And then we go somewhere we’ve never been to before, and it’d be packed and amazing.
Any interesting tour-related stories?
Daniel: Oh, yeah. We drove out of the way, seven hours north in BC. To Prince George, which was horrendous. We had two days to get to Victoria from Edmonton, driving through the mountains. We must have taken the wrong fork and gone north for seven hours. So then, by the time we got to Victoria, we’d missed all the ferries except the last one. We got there literally as it was pulling out. We just drove the entire day to get to this ferry, and we missed it by about 5 minutes.
Were you able to get to your show on time?
Daniel: Yeah, luckily that was still the driving day. We actually didn’t play until the next day. It was just really frustrating.
Let’s talk about the new album. How is it different from your previous releases?
Daniel: We recorded it kind of in the opposite way. The last one we recorded all live and basically really, really fast… in a barn, which is not the normal place to record an album, obviously. For this one, we took our time. We did a lot of layering and kind of collage-style, where we just record a whole lot of stuff and put it together afterwards. So some of the songs are like mini stacks of different layers of keyboards. There’s definitely a different style. And also, it was very spaced out. We had three months to work on it.
What’s the story behind the name?
Daniel: “The Only Really Thing”? It’s just something I say a lot, by accident. I get things mixed up, and I’ll say, “Well, the only really thing with that is…” And everybody’s just like, “What?” There’s a line between confusing and interesting, and I think that’s where we live. We just kind of summed up a lot of the non-sense that is in our heads.
Yeah, when I first read it, I was wondering about the double adverbs. I thought it was a typo.
Daniel: Yeah, exactly. Well, I’m glad you got it right. A lot of people say “The Only Real Thing”, and I’m just like, What do you mean?
I read on your Twitter that you had a secret release party in Toronto on last week (Oct 9th).-
Daniel: Yeah, that was craziness by itself! We drove from Chicago that day. It took eleven hours or something… I was trying to set up the party via text message. We had a keg of beer that somebody had to pick up – all the things that come with running a big party… By the time we got there, it was 11 or so, and it was basically all set up. The first band had gone on and everything was set to go. And then we played the entire album all the way through, which we’ve never done before. And it was at a really cool space, too.
Where was it?
Daniel: My friend Bo plays in a band called La Casa Muerte. He has this amazing loft space with a stage and a soundboard. It’s as good as The Boat or something like that. We played there a couple of times. We did, I think, during NxNE with Japanther and DD/MM/YYYY, who are two of my favourite bands. And that was amazing – there were people hanging from the rafters; it was intense.
Was it a spontaneous thing?
Daniel: Yeah! We literally didn’t know we were playing until that day. We were just gonna have a party when we got back, so we could all see our friends.
So, it was private?
Daniel: Yeah, it was kind of a private thing. Although it ended up being totally full of people we don’t know, as they usually are. If you tell people there’s beer and bands, they’ll just come, y’know?
Spiral Beach has a very distinct sound. Where do you get your influence from?
Daniel: We listen to everything. Like everything in this store around us. This is actually where I buy my CDs all the time… but on the new album, anyway, we kind of took this whole Bollywood thing to the max and tried to sonically make an obvious connection. It just meshes really well with what we do… like that all over the place, colourful kind of fun-ness.
What got you into Bollywood music in the first place?
Daniel: Well, originally, our friend got a bunch of these compilation records in New York City at a specialty shop. It’s pretty hard to find the original records. Most of them aren’t released in North America at all. They’re all film soundtracks. I just thought it was an interesting thing that it’s almost like a secret, kind of like hidden music… like Asha Bhosle, who is the Queen of Bollywood – she has supposedly recorded more songs than anybody in history. These people are kind of legendary, but nobody knows who they are here. And partly, we want to draw attention to that, to show that this music’s amazing. But as far as the sound of it, I think that kind of warm analogue, really echoed, kind of psychedelic sound that a lot of those artists are basically copying… I guess like Pink Floyd and all those psychedelic bands from the 60s. But then, they were doing it in this weird, off-kilter way because they probably heard the records on static-y AM radio. Every few weeks, they might hear a song like that, so the influence kind of seeped in. And we’re taking it back. So it’s like, West-East-West – going back and forth.
Your shows have always been so theatrical and visually-engaging. Why is that so important to Spiral Beach?
Daniel: It’s just more fun to do that way! It seems like such an obvious thing, but so many bands just set up and play and then leave – and that’s kind of it.
Do you also put up the same extravagant shows on tour? Complete with all those props?
Daniel: We try to! There’s different levels, obviously. There’s been a couple of times we’ve taken our friend, Trevor, who does projections for the band at most of the Toronto shows. So, we’ve tried taking that on the road – sometimes it works, sometimes it’s kind of a hassle, mostly because of the timing. If you only have twenty minutes to set up and soundcheck, and then the other band has to play, there’s just not enough time to set up a room full of glowing stuff. But for those shows, like the loft party last week, we can definitely make it into our own world.
Do you ever consider changing that, perhaps doing a completely stripped down show?
Daniel: We have, occassionally. Sometimes, we’ll do something totally different. We have a secret alter-ego band, too, called Skunt, which is the absolute opposite of Spiral Beach. We just play our songs in a stripped down setting. We’ve done that a couple of times. We played with Fucked Up as Skunt, and it was the dirtiest-sounding show ever.
I remember at Rolly’s Garage you were Swirling Shores!
Daniel: Yeah, exactly! Swirling Shores is really funny. You don’t want to be “the local band”, so we try to make sure every time we play in Toronto, it’s kind of like, “We’re back!” Tonight at Lee’s Palace would be the first regular club show we’ve done since April and only the second one for this year.
What’s your favourite venue to play at?
Daniel: In Toronto? Probably the Centre of Gravity Theatre, where we did the big all-night party a couple of years ago.
Are you going to do anything like that soon?
Daniel: I want to, for sure. We’re on the road until December, so I think maybe when we get back, we might put something together there. We’ll see. It’s also a little out of the way. I wish there was a space similar to that in the west end. Getting everybody out to the east feels like a journey… which is part of what makes it so much fun.
If you were a singing animal, what would you be?
Daniel: I always thought the animal I relate to most would be a fox. But that’s just me… for maybe being a little bit stuck up or something… So if I was to be a cool singing animal, I’d definitely be a fox. But if I was to be an actual singing animal, I’d be… maybe I’d just be a seagull. There you
go!

Dan Mangan
I officially deem Friday October 16th, Friday in-store madness. All three record stores – that is Soundscapes, Criminal Records and Sonic Boom – are holding fantastic in-store performances that’s great for the ears but even better for the wallets (i.e. FREE!). Good news: you can make it to all three! Bad news: there is no bad news; how is free music ever bad? (Don’t answer that.) Here’s a run-down of what your schedule should, and WILL look like:
5:00PM – Two Hours Traffic @ Soundscapes
East-coast pop perfection; the boys of Two Hours Traffic will be playing tunes from their latest release, Territory in what is rumoured to be an rare intimate, acoustic set. They will also be at Lee’s, headlining a show later that night with opening acts The Danks and Spiral Beach (of whom I’ll get to in two seconds…)
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/twohourstraffic
6:00PM – Dan Mangan @ Criminal Records
XM Verge Award winner for Artist of the Year – and deservingly so! Indie-folk singer-songwriter Dan Mangan may not have been on the tip of everyone’s tongues a few months ago but with prize in toll, he has definitely become the one to watch. Catch his fantastic set at Criminal Records then head down the street and catch him and Will Currie and the Country French at the Rivoli, if you can!
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/danmangan
7:00PM – Spiral Beach @ Sonic Boom
Local pop-rock darlings Spiral Beach will be rocking the basement of Sonic Boom with tracks from their new album, The Only Real Thing. They’ll also be opening for Two Hours Traffic, as previously mentioned!

So you’re welcome. I took the pleasure of planning out three hours of your life for you. Transportation? Bus, bike or feet – all methods work! I’ll probably be testing out the feet method so if you see a tired Lamb on the streets, give her some water or food. She’ll also accept money donations if you don’t have water/food. See you around and happy listening!

Immaculate Machine
In case you missed out on RIP: A Remix Manifesto during Canadian Music Week, you can pay what you can for a download of the whole film online! To pay (or not, if you’re financially strapped for cash at the moment) and watch it, click here.
Pink Mountaintops and Quest For Fire will be at the Horseshoe on June 14th.
Rock Plaza Central will be playing a slew of shows in Toronto soon, starting with a show at the Tranzac on May 25th. This is followed by a free in-store at Sonic Boom on May 26th and a set on May 27th at the George Weston Recital Hall during the day and at the Dakota Tavern with the Skydiggers at night. And if for some reason, you still end up missing out, they’ll be back for one more show on June 13th at Lee’s with Suckers.
Speaking of in-stores, Vetiver will be at Sonic Boom next Friday, May 15th at 7:00 pm, just before their set at the Horseshoe later that evening. This show is free and all-ages.
Immaculate Machine has a new video out for their single, “Sound the Alarms” Watch here. I’m still impartial to the new material from High on Jackson Hill, as I have yet to listen to the album, but “Sound the Alarms” is a good start; slightly stepping away from the happier pop tunes of Fables but still maintaining its light-hearted rock attitude. I look forward to hearing the full album!
Happy listening!

Gentleman Reg @ Sonic Boom for Record Store Day
“I feel like I’m dreaming. Somebody pinch me. You know what? I’m a pretty sound sleeper – that may not be enough. Somebody shoot me in the face.”
I didn’t say that. Heck, the guy who did say that – one Stephen Colbert – was talking about getting the chance to speak at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, but I think this statement captures my feelings the last few days as I wrap up my first year of university. I finished my last exam yesterday afternoon, and now I’m beginning to say my goodbyes and getting ready to make the move from downtown TO to the strange wilderness that is North York. Now that school’s done, I’m hoping to be posting twice as often on here and covering even more shows and interviewing even more artists and bands.
International Record Store Day was this past Saturday and I got the chance to check out the festivities at Sonic Boom, which included solid performances from the likes of Gentleman Reg, Green Go and Hooded Fang. But we all know this day was about the free shit, and there was plenty of that; including vinyls from Josh Reichmann and Controller.Controller., a Paper Bag Records sampler and some pretty cool posters and pins. And just because the event has passed, doesn’t mean that you still shouldn’t be out there supporting your local record stores.
Twitter and Pitchfork. If there are any two cultural trends that I shouldn’t be following, it would be the latest social networking craze and the holier-than-thou tastemaking music website. But damn was their staff’s Twitter coverage of last week’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival pretty darn funny (sample Tweets included “there’s a guy next to me with a 4-year old with no earplugs. parental epic fail” and “killers open with “human” and “somebody told me.” they know they’ve still got another hour plus up there, right?”), and the next best thing to actually being in the middle of the Californian desert, dancing and sweating with thousands of complete strangers to everyone from Leonard Cohen to My Bloody Valentine to Paul McCartney. To read more about what you missed and to follow PItchfork on Twitter, click here.
Fleet Foxes are coming to Massey Hall in August! The date has yet to be finalized, but according to Chromewaves, event promoters recently confirmed this announcement.
How can hip-hop be dead when Kanye West and Clipse are still here? Their shit-hot collaboration, “Kinda Like A Big Deal” (which you can listen over at Kanye’s blog here), features some “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”-style boasting, honest-to-goodness rapping from South Park’s most recent target and bodes well for the Virginia duo’s upcoming third album.
While everyone and their mothers have been turning out remixes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Zero” recently (including MSTRKRFT, Animal Collective and N.A.S.A.), I thought I’d share with you a remix of a song from a band a little closer to home. Rio party-starter’s The Twelves turned out this remix of Metric’s “Help, I’m Alive”, which takes the original and turns it into a slab of French disco.
Hope y’all enjoyed, and celebrated accordingly, everyone’s favourite non-statuatory holiday on Monday. I’ll leave you with a few 4/20-related gems; here is Alexisonfire covering Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf”, a videofeaturing everyone’s favourite cuddly, family-friendly rapper (and avid cannabis supporter) Snoop Dogg, and some guy named Bob Marley talking about…well, you know where I’m going with this.
Cheers,
Max

International Record Store Day!
Trick question: what is the best holiday ever?
If you answered “Christmas”, “Easter” or “my birthday”, you fail. Of course the only logical answer is International Record Store Day!
Taking place on Saturday, April 18th, Record Store Day can only mean two things – lots of free music and even more fantastic sales. And in in-store fashion, all shows are 100% all-ages and free – deal or what! It’s a recession, people – I say you jump at these opportunities. This year, stores such as Sonic Boom, Criminal Records, Soundscapes and Sunrise will be celebrating. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s going down and where you need to be!
Criminal Records (493 Queen Street West)
This year, the kind folks at Criminal Records will be offering “lots of sales, free stuff, and Record Day exclusives”. And of course at Criminal, it wouldn’t be a celebration without live music! At 6:00 pm, Chris Eaton of Rock Plaza Central (who will be releasing their new album on June 16th via their new label Paper Bag Records) will play a solo set. Afterwards, the fantastic Great Bloomers will take the stage at 7:00 pm.
Sonic Boom (512 Bloor Street West)
Most of the Singing Lamb staff partaking in Record Store Day will be stationed at Sonic Boom. Starting at 4:00 pm (going till 9:00 pm), it’ll be a jam-packed night of free music from some of the best bands in town, includingSlim Twig, Lullabye Arkestra, SunParlour Players, Gentleman Reg, Green Go, Hooded Fang, Steamboat, Little Girls and DJ sets from DJ Shit La Merde. Also offered at Sonic Boom will be giveaways and limited edition Record Store Day exclusives. If you decide to attend Sonic Boom’s festivities, it is recommended that you make a kind donation of a non-perishable food item though. That’s the least you can do for 8 kick-ass bands for free after all!
Sunrise Records (336 Yonge Street)
For the more hardcore music lovers, Sunrise will be your destination next week. Children of Bodom will be there for an autograph session on Thursday April 16th at 2:00 pm, as will Lamb of God at 5:00 pm. Yes, Sunrise is so excited about Record Store Day that they had to start the party early with Lamb of God. Also, expect performances on April 18th from Emma Lee, The Artist Life, One Second 2 Late, Honeymoon Suite, Thriving Ivory, Blackie Jackett Jr. (Finger Eleven side project), Josh Reichmann and KO. I especially recommend Emma Lee and Josh Reichmann. No set times are announced yet but festivities will start relatively early – around 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm. In addition, Sunrise promises “free giveaways, goodie bags filled with new formats, new releases, band swag and much more…”
Soundscapes (572 College Street)
Though no in-stores will take place at Soundscapes, the store will still be holding a sale! 10% will be taken off of all CDs, vinyl, DVDs and books! And with a selection like Soundscapes’, I would take advantage of this sale! Also a non-Record Store Day reminder: DD/MM/YYYY will be playing a free in-store on April 14th at 7:00 pm. Be there!
No information was found regarding Penguin Music (256A Queen St. W), but they are taking part in Record Store Day so if you have the time, pop in and check out their sales!

Happy listening and have a great Record Store Day!

Sam Roberts
Quick note of advice, never buy big, ugly couches that don’t fit through the door properly. It’s more tedious than sitting through shitty opening bands. I am so tired. But on the bright side, my week of hell at school is coming to an end; therefore I can return to my daily posts of nothingness and ramble about Feist! Hurray!
Okay, I have nothing to report regarding Feist, but for anyone keeping track of how many times I name-drop Feist, here’s another three. I demand someone to start a drinking game.
Here’s a little news round-up right now. Actually blogging will come later on today or tomorrow, but trust me, I have things to blog to you about! Exciting stuff!
Pitchfork reports that Bloc Party and Animal Collective have just announced new tour dates – none of which are in Toronto (YET) though. Damn.
Sam Roberts, who will be spending plenty of time in Toronto, will also add an in-store to his list of shows. He’ll be playing at Sonic Boom on November 15th at 3:00 p.m. November 15th is starting to shape up pretty well, what with the free library show that night at North York Central too (feat. Gentleman Reg, Masia One, The Winter Gloves and Slim Twig).
For the closeted and un-closeted Gossip Girl fans, this week’s episode featured a new Ramones cover by Thurston Moore and Jemina Pearl. Click here to see a clip of the show and listen to “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”. I’m not going to lie – I’m a fan of the show.
You Ain’t No Picasso reports that The Music Tapes will be making a tour stop in Toronto on December 1st. I’m not entirely sure about any further info, but I’ll let you know when I figure it out. For now, enjoy this new video for “Majesty”
While I was on Y.A.N.P., I also stumbled upon this Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s video I had never listened to them (yet), but it’s a really good song! I shall inquire more on said band…
Looking for some holiday fun? Well the Tiger Bar is hosting a two night event presented by No Shame called“Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em!” Night one (December 12th , 9:00 pm) is as follows: The D’Urbervilles, Katie Stelmanis, Mantler. Night two (December 13th , 9:00 pm) goes like this: The D’Urbervilles, Bocce, Slow Hand Motem. Mmmm, lots of D’Urbervilles. The events are 19+.
The Kinks are apparently reuniting and working on a new album. Sweet! Read more here.
That’ll be all for now, as I must run to class now! Hurray, education… at least Ryerson’s not on strike.
Musically,
Melody
