An Horse

An Horse

Santigold will be at the Phoenix on June 3rd.

I hate myself for forgetting to mention this (although to be fair, I said it on Twitter when I found out a few days ago) - Laura Barrett and The Phonemes will be at the Tranzac on Thursday, April 2nd. And on April 3rd,Out of This Spark Records will present Picastro, Casey Mecjia (Ohbijou, Bruce Peninsula), and Chris Sutherland at the front room of the Tranzac. Doors for both shows will be at 10:00 pm and the April 3rd show is Pay What You Can.

Green Go will be celebrating the release of their new album Borders at the Wrong Bar on April 30th, along with special guests The Magic, Everything All the Time and DJ sets by OPOPO. Cover is $5.00 – worth it!

In case you missed Australia’s An Horse during CMW, the duo will be back on April 21st, opening for Appleseed Cast at the Horseshoe. Tickets are still available for $10.00 and this will be a 19+ event.

Lewis and Clark will open for Bat For Lashes at the Mod Club on April 25th. Tickets are still available for $15.00 and this will also be a 19+ event.

Opening for The Pains of Being Pure At Heart at Lee’s on April 28th will be Brooklyn’s Zaza.

Portland’s Grouper will join Animal Collective on tour this summer. Look for them to make a stop at the Sound Academy on May 16th. I do believe tickets are sold out for this event though.

And last but not least in “opening acts” news, Montreal’s David MacLeod will be opening for Plants and Animals at the Mod Club on May 7th. Tickets are still available for $15.00 and this event will be 19+.

Sunset Rubdown has announced details about their new album, entitled Dragonslayer. Read more about it (and take a look at the sweet album cover) here!

And to end off today’s news update, I’d like to dedicate this post to Blender Magazine, as the publication will be shutting down, with its current issue on newsstands being its last. I had stopped reading Blender for quite some time now, but I was a fan at one point; they will be missed.

Happy listening!

Melody

The Mixtape Isn’t Dead

January 14th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Mixtapes?

Mixtapes?

Whatever happened to the mixtape? It used to be the ultimate gesture of love; the hours spent choosing what songs would win over the object of your desire, the careful sequencing for maximum effect, and of course, the homemade artwork and handwritten track-listing – but the last few years have not been kind to the mixtape. If video killed the radio star and MTV killed the music video, than surely MP3s and file-sharing websites have a hand in the downfall of the mixtape.

That said, I am going to make an attempt to prove to you loyal Singing Lamb readers, that the mixtape isn’t dead, with the help of some artists that are putting mixes together these days to promote their own material and help introduce new artists to the world. Sure, the tape cassette may have all but dropped off the face of the earth, but there are still plenty of mixtape-styled CDs available in stores and often free online.

So I found myself a few weeks ago in Play De Record, on Yonge Street, on an assignment and got a chance to talk with an employee by the name of Ryan Stevens about the record store. If you find yourself in the downtown Toronto area, be sure to check it out – they specialize in all sorts of music from dance to local hip-hop to soca & reggae – not to mention a large selection of music production equipment and classic and current vinyl. To make a long story short I ended up walking out of the store with a copy of the stellar new Top Ranking Santogold – A Diplo Dub mixtape. Featuring a whopping 35 tracks, including songs from The Clash, Aretha Franklin and Three 6 Mafia – not to mention plenty of unreleased material and remixes from Brooklyn’s Ms. Santi White herself, it flows smoothly thanks to the master touch of the pride of Philadelphia, Diplo. You can get it here without paying a cent.

While we’re on the subject of Diplo, if you haven’t checked out his Mad Decent Radio podcasts on his websiteor available for free on iTunes, you should definitely do that. Look out for his Diplo In a Trainwreck remix of Radiohead ‘s “Reckoner” while you’re at.

The king of the mashup, Girl Talk aka Greg Gillis, was in Toronto last week and everywhere you went you could see his face staring back at you on the covers of Eye Weekly and NOW magazines. According to iheartcomix, France’s Leam is “kind of like the French version of Girl Talk, only not as over the top.” Listening to his Your Fucking Melting Pote Vol. 2, which includes French pop, club bangers and timeless classic hits, I’d be inclined to agree.

Alright, we’re getting there, I promise. Finally we have Washington, D.C. hip-hop artist Wale (which is pronounced wah-lay, as in not the large marine mammal) who in collaboration with DJ Nick Catchdubs, have released several well-received mixtapes. The first was 100 Miles and Running which has the best remix ever of “D.A.N.C.E.” with Wale rapping overtop, and now we have The Mixtape About Nothing. That’s right folks; it is indeed a Seinfield-themed mixtape. However for those of that typically wouldn’t have anything to do with hip-hop, Wale just might surprise you. “The Kramer” samples Michael Richards’ racist rant at a comedy club back in November 2006, and sees Wale weighing in intelligibly on the “n-word” and race relations in the United States.

More recently released mixtapes

The Hood Internet – The Mixtape Volume 3
The Kickdrums – Things Don’t Change
Weird Tapes – Blue Skies Captain
DJ K-Tel podcasts (especially the Bad Ass Blue Bees and Punk Ass Bitches mixes)

So hopefully this public service announcement didn’t fall on deaf ears, and I urge you all when you’re finished here to go and make your own mixtape for someone that you care about (or your sworn enemy, whatever floats your boat). As for myself, you’ll excuse me while I finish mine for my friend, which hopefully I can get finished before his birthday on the weekend.

Cheers,
Max

Hard to Explain

October 8th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

The Strokes

The Strokes

I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately.

It all started this weekend when Tech Nerd (Graham) started playing “Last Nite” by the Strokes to me on his guitar. Not only have I not listened to that band in years, but I completely forgot how much I loved Is This It?! Since then, I’ve decided to whip out my old, pink CD player (only because I haven’t charged my mp3 player…) and my old Strokes albums to listen to – and oh my, are they good! Why did I ever stop listening to them?! What adds to the nostalgia of this little story is that I have a tendency to keep concert tickets in the sleeves of my albums (a handy tip I got from a friend) and when I opened up First Impressions of Earth, I saw my first concert ticket for their show back in May of 2006 at Ricoh Coliseum! That’s right; my first show was a little over two years ago. That’s alarmingly strange because I’ve been to well over 50 shows since then and it’s weird because it feels like it’s been at least five years of shows by now! Oh, magical time.

Anyway, my whole point of the story is that it brought up a question that I’ve been pondering for quite some time now – where the hell is that new Strokes album? I swear, I remember reading about it somewhere; and as much as I like Albert Hammond Jr’s solo stuff, I would really like to hear some fresh Strokes material. If you know anything about this, please let me know! For now, I guess we’ll just have to settle with this lovely Converse tune by N.E.R.D., Santogold and the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas.

Another band that I’ve always loved has just released some exciting news today. Toronto darlings, Broken Social Scene, have just announced a second show at the Sound Academy on November 28th and Land of Talk are scheduled to open. So with any luck, those attending the first night will also be treated to some Land of Talk? Here’s to hoping… and logic. Excitingly enough, Montreal’s Land of Talk also has a new record out today, entitled Some Are Lakes. And from what I’ve heard of that album so far, it’s a good one. Run out and buy it -now!

And on completely un-related notes now..

Paper Bag Records just announced that they have signed Josh Reichmann and will be releasing his upcoming full-length. For now, you can enjoy a free download of his Life is Legend EP on his site. (Or by subscribing to his newsletter; I’m not entirely sure. You need the username and password in order to download the EP) Reichmann is slated to play this Thursday at Wrong Bar along with Anagram, Corpusse and $100 for the launch of Hunter & Cook Magazine.

Arts & Crafts Records’ Los Campesinos! will release their new album, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed on November 25th. Is it just me, or are they always releasing something new? Deluxe packages of the album will include a bonus DVD documentary on the band, and a snazzy fanzine of lyrics and art from Xiu Xiu and Menomena, just to name a few. Tracklisting is as follows:

  • 1. Ways To Make It Through The Wall
  • 2. Miserabilia
  • 3. We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed
  • 4. Between An Erupting Earth And An Exploding Sky
  • 5. You’ll Need Those Fingers For Crossing
  • 6. It’s Never That Easy Though, Is It? (Song For The Other Kurt)
  • 7. The End Of The Asterisk
  • 8. Documented Minor Emotional Breakdown # 1
  • 9. Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time
  • 10. All Your Kayfabe Friends

And last but not least, this year’s North By Northeast Festival in Toronto will be a week late, stretching from June 18-21. Should be lots of fun! I’ll keep you posted as news and schedules won’t be announced for another 5 months or something like that.

Musically,
Melody
