Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest

Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest

Are you familiar with the concept of dualism? Me neither. Completely irrelevant to the philosophical concept, though, 2009 definitely presented quite the interesting polarity when it came to album releases. There were plenty of great ones and an unfortunate amount of things never meant for the ears. But focusing on just the positive side of 2009′s musical spectrum, the following are some of the records I’ve fallen in love with this year.

Personally, ranking stuff in accordance to best and least just make me uneasy. Hence, I’m listing my top ’09 records in alphabetical order (with supplementary zany visual aids for your short attention spans)!

Beacons – Ohbijou

Check: New Years – Ohbijou

Bitte Orca – Dirty Projectors

Check: Stillness is the Move

Check: Oh My God (It Still Means a Lot to Me) – The Wooden Sky

One Hundred Dollars

One Hundred Dollars

I apologize for the lack of updates lately; I’ll try my best to keep you guys up-to-date more often! In fact, if someone could find me a job [desperate plea alert], I promise I’ll update the site every day! It’s a challenge, Lamb readers, but if you can do it, I’ll owe you big time. [Okay; enough begging] But for more Lamb news every day, make sure to follow me on Twitter! Some updates are random and useless (e.g. “My legs apparently don’t work today; I tripped three times on the street. One woman gave me the deepest look of concern.”) but many of them are actually music-related (e.g. “Rock Plaza Central @ Sonic Boom tonight (7 pm) – see you there! Oh, and Dog Dag tomorrow @ Soundscapes (6 pm); crazy!”)!

Also, congrats to Jordan W. for winning a pair of tickets to Slim Twig and a copy of Contempt! Thanks to everyone who entered! There are still two contests running, so don’t forget to enter those!

Here’s some news!

The aforementioned St. Vincent show at Lee’s Palace is going to be at the Horseshoe now. So mark that down – Horseshoe, not Lee’s! Which also means you better buy your tickets before they sell out. You can stream St. Vincent’s recent show in Washington, D.C. now on NPR.

One Hundred Dollars will be playing “their only full band show in Toronto for the summer” on June 12th. Opening for them will be Deep Dark Woods and Jason Benoit; definitely not a show you’ll want to miss out on! Tickets go on sale this Friday for $8.00. This show is 19+.

1990s recently canceled their June 3rd date at the Horseshoe, along with several other tour stops due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

The Witchies will be opening for Sunset Rubdown at Lee’s on July 10th. Tickets are on sale now for $13.00. This show is 19+.

In addition to opening for Camera Obscura at Lee’s in June, Anni Rossi will also open for Micachu at El Mocambo on July 14th. Tickets are on sale now for $12.00. This show is 19+.

Other Show Announcements:
The Lemonheads @ Lee’s (July 4th, $20.00, 19+)
Peter Murphy @ Opera House (July 11th)
The Charlatans, Hatcham Social @ The Mod Club (September 23rd)
Electric Prunes, Love, Sky Saxon @ Lee’s (August 14th, $25.00, 19+)
Company of Thieves, Blackie Jackett Jr. @ Drake (June 2nd, $10.00, 19+)
Man Man @ Lee’s (July 13th, $15.50, 19+)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a new video out for “Heads Will Roll” (from their latest release, It’s Blitz!). Watch here.

Regina Spektor has not one, but two new videos out! Watch “Laughing With” here and “Dance Anthem of the 80s” here!

Apostle of Hustle’s Andrew Whiteman was recently on Exclaim! TV’s Garageland. Watch here. Also, don’t miss them at the Music Gallery this Friday; tickets are still on sale for $22.00. This show is all-ages.

And last but not least, the Polaris Prize long list will be announced on June 15th this year, followed by the short list on July 7th. The Polaris Prize, just as a reminder, is an annual prize that is given out to the album, that’s decided upon by a jury, who is believed to have been the “best album of the year”. Along with the title, the winner also receives $20,000 and some bragging rights. Eligible candidates must’ve put out a record between June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. Past winners included Final Fantasy – He Poos Clouds (2006), Patrick Watson – Closer Than Paradise (2007) and Caribou – Andorra (2008). The winner this year will be announced at a gala celebration in Toronto on September 21st, 2009. Who do YOU think should be nominated?

Happy listening!

The Dirty Projectors

The Dirty Projectors

It kills me that I have to pass on TV on the Radio and The Dirty Projectors in June, but I’ve sworn off the Sound Academy since my last excursion (with some exceptions, of course). Bad news is that I’ll miss TV on the Radio for sure, but good news is that the Dirty Projectors will return later that month for a show at Lee’s with Skeletons on June 24th!

Other show announcements:
Abe Vigoda, Talbot Tagora @ El Mocambo (July 22nd, $10.00, 19+)
New York Dolls @ Lee’s (June 30th, $29.50, 19+)
Fake Problems @ Sneaky Dee’s (July 7th, $10.00, 19+)
Bowerbirds, Megafaun @ Sneaky Dee’s (July 14th, $11.50, 19+)

Underworld @ Kool Haus (August 11th)
The Rural Alberta Advantage @ Horseshoe (July 30th, 19+)
Tokyo Police Club, Winter Gloves @ CNE Bandshell (August 29th)

Another new Regina Spektor track has been released from her upcoming album. “Blue Lips” can be streamedhereFar will be released on June 22nd.

Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor

As previously reported, Regina Spektor’s new album, Far, will be released on June 22nd. Click here to listen to a new track from Far, “Laughing With”. Not as upbeat and cheerful as we’re used to hearing from a track like “Fidelity” but “Laughing With” is a beautiful, sweet tune with fantastic lyrics, more reminiscent of songs like “Ode to Divorce” or “Summer in the City”. Definitely a huge thumbs up and I’m terribly excited to hear the rest of the album in June!

Patrick Wolf will be at the Mod Club on June 17th, as part of NXNE, with Living Things, the Plastiscines, and Jaguar Love. Tickets will be $20.00 and this is an all-ages show. Doors will be at 7:00 pm, so this will be an early show.

Fever Ray will be at the Kool Haus on October 2nd.

NXEW interviews Two Hours TrafficClick here to read!

The Sounds have a new song out, entitled “No One Sleeps When I’m Awake”. Click here to download!

According to Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees’ MySpace, the Halifax band will be playing an all-ages show on June 20th (during NXNE; they will also be playing on June 19th as part of the festivities). This is just a huge hunch, but I have a feeling this may be for the next edition of Daps Duo’s all-ages series, seeing as how they’re holding an all-ages show on the same day. Call me crazy…anyway; this is just speculation on my part. We’ll just have to wait for confirmation.

Afie Jurvanen, who’s backed up for artists such as Feist, The Stills and Hayden, has finally announced a solo album. Under the name, Bahamas, his upcoming record Pink Strat will be released on July 6th. Here’s the tracklisting:

Pink Strat
01 “Lonely Loves”
02 “Hockey Teeth”
03 “Southern Drawl”
04 “For Good Reason”
05 “You’re Bored, I’m Old”
06 “Sunshine Blues”
07 “Already Yours”
08 “What’s Worse?”
09 “Let The Good Times Roll”
10 “Try, Tried, Trying”
11 “Till the Morning”
12 “Whole, Wide, World”

Also, watch out for Bahamas at the Dakota Tavern on August 6th.

The Music Gallery will be celebrating their Summer Courtyard Series, starting next month. Here’s a rundown of all the fun!

Last but not least, don’t forget to catch Rah Rah at the Boat tonight and El Mocambo on Tuesday! Got plans already and won’t be able to catch them? It’s okay as the band’s MySpace indicates that they’ll be back at the El Mocambo on June 18th, for NXNE!

Happy listening!

March 16th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

The Bicycles

The Bicycles

Hello!

Hope you all had a fantastic two weeks without the Singing Lamb. Do not fear though, I am back now and new posts will be up! Canadian Music Week was eventful to say the least. Stay tuned for a little review of my two days of action (as I skipped out on Wednesday and Friday) later tonight/tomorrow morning.

I’m not going to run through every piece of news that I missed while on lamb-cation, but here are a few important things to take note of!

Album news:
Bob Dylan has announced that his new album, Together Through Life, will be out on April 28th. For more info and a sweet photo of the album cover, go here

- Just like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs shortly after the leak of their album, Metric has also pushed up the release date of their upcoming record, Fantasies to March 31st. If you pre-order the album on the band’s website now, you can get a limited edition package with bonus tracks and free posters.

Regina Spektor has announced a new album entitled Far. A release date and tracklisting has yet to be announced but read more about it in this interview!

Arts & Crafts have been busy lately with the signing of Years (Broken Social Scene’s Ohad Benchetrit), Zeusand Still Life Still (the latter two of which the Lamb has mentioned already). Years will release its self-titled album on May 5th, Still Life Still’s debut EP is scheduled to be released in June, followed by a full length in August, and last but not least Zeus will have an EP out this spring. To add on to this, long time A&C memberApostle of Hustle has announced a new album entitled Eats Darkness that’ll be released on May 19th. For the tracklisting and mp3 of the new track “Perfect Fit”, go here!

Show announcements:
- The Rosebuds @ Lee’s Palace on April 13th. Tickets are $10.00.
- Ponytail @ DeLeon White Gallery on April 27th.
- A Camp @ Mod Club on June 1st. Tickets are $15.00.
- Beirut, The Dodos @ Phoenix on July 9th. Tickets are $25.00.
- John Doe & The Sadies @ Horseshoe on April 30th. Tickets are $17.50.
- Bowerbirds @ Drake Hotel on May 2nd. Tickets are $11.00.
- MUTEK, Guillaume & the Coutu-Dumonts, The Mole and Pier Bucci @ the Drake Hotel on April 9th.
- The Famines @ Rancho Relaxo on May 15th.
- Cut Throat Britva will be playing a free show at the Horseshoe on March 24th.
- Chester French and Hollywood Holt will open for Lady Sovereign at Lee’s Palace on May 1st.
- Peter Bjorn and John will open for Depeche Mode at the Molson Amphitheatre on July 24th.
- Here We Go Magic will open for Grizzly Bear at the Phoenix on June 5th.

There is some sad news to end this post though. If you didn’t catch The Bicycles at the Horseshoe (as part of Chartattack’s CMW showcase), you may have missed out on their last show…ever. According to a press release on March 11th, the Toronto band will begin an “indefinite hiatus” after that show. They will continue to work on music videos, and film and TV projects, but the band has no plans for the future at the moment. Drummer Dana Snell can still be seen playing for Gentleman Reg, as can guitarist Andrew Scott with Sebastien Grainger’s band and Andy Lloyd on tour with The Born Ruffians. The band will be missed by the Singing Lamb and this blog post is dedicated to you. Best of luck in the future!

Happy listening!

That Sounds Familiar…

February 2nd, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor

Ever since Soviet Kitsch was released worldwide, Regina Spektor has been shedding her veil of obscurity and gaining popularity everywhere.

Her songs have appeared in shows like CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, Weeds, and Grey’s Anatomy. Her song “Fidelity” was also used in the trailer for 27 Dresses, and even a JC Penny commercial was graced with the voice of Ms. Spektor.

One cannot help but be taken with her unique vocal style, quirky song lyrics, and admirable piano skills…not to mention the fact that she is positively adorable.

But recently, Spektor sound-alikes have also been growing in popularity as fast as her sound has.

In fact, there has been much controversy and dispute over whether Spektor was the voice behind a song in a recent Rice Krispies commercial. The song was not actually not her, but a composition created specifically for the commercial. A friend of mine also thought that a song in a recent Macbook Air commercial was Spektor, but after consulting the Internet, conceded that it was “New Soul” by Yael Naim.

But going beyond television ads, there are some artists who could almost replace Spektor in case of laryngitis, and only die-hard fans would notice.

Caroline Keating is a Montreal-based artist whose likeness to Regina is eerie at times. Her pronunciations and her voice sometimes sound almost completely like Spektor. She has a totally vintage look, and her bouncy/catchy music and use of piano are also reminiscent of Spektor.

If I had heard Keating before Spektor, I think I would have been nuts for her; she’s very talented and her music is bouncy and intriguing. However, hearing her after years of Spektor-love distracts from her talent; the music is almost too similar. However, her work is still worth a listen; some of her songs are truly unique, and one has to admire the talent it took to create each piece. Plus, if you feel like being more hipster than your friends, while still listening to something Regina Spektor-ish, this girl has got it.

Another Montreal-based singer, Beatrice Martin of coeur de pirate, has also been compared to Spektor in the past. While it is true that her use of piano is very reminiscent of Spektor, and their voices do sound similar at times, Martin differs in some key ways.

For starters, if one saw Martin walking down the road with her tattooed arms and long blonde hair, one would be more inclined to think that she was in a rock band or maybe the rebellious background dancer for the Pussycat Dolls, instead of an accomplished pianist.

Besides not looking the part, she also has an ensemble behind her while performing; violin, guitar, bass, drums, and the alto sax. This gives her music a more varied sound, although she cannot boast self-proficiency like Spektor and Keating.

Call me crazy, but I think that the fact that coeur de pirate’s music is entirely in French also adds a lot to the sound; it’s beautiful to listen to, and just using another language changes Martin’s sound and sets her further from Spektor.

I have to say that I am a bigger fan of Martin than Keating; her sound is similar to Spektor’s, but it is also distinctly different.

So what’s the final verdict? Regina Spektor and her music are one of a kind. No sound-alike can quite match her vocals or has that certain…soviet kitsch. (please pardon the pun)

However, the music that she inspires is often beautiful as well. As long as the artist can really find a way to separate themselves from Spektor, she is a great inspiration for creation.

Keep it real kids,
Cashlyn
