Matt and Kim @ The Phoenix – October 29, 2010

November 15th, 2010 | By: Jodi Patel

Matt & Kim @ The Phoenix - Photo by Gregory N. Benner

Matt and Kim, super-couple from Brooklyn, New York, graced the stage of the Phoenix Concert Theatre on October 29. Being their self-proclaimed biggest show in Toronto, Matt and Kim gave a performance worthy of selling out even the biggest venues.

Entering the stage to Notorious B.I.G’s “Where Brooklyn At,” the all-ages crowd knew it would be a show to remember with various covers of songs by Guns n’ Roses, Wu Tang Clan, and Eve. Performing songs from their albums Matt & Kim and Grand, Matt and Kim had the crowd dancing and enjoying every minute of their indie pop songs. Having released their new album Sidewalks on November 2, they decided the pre-show on this tour would be a dance party of songs from their new album.

Setting themselves apart from many groups, Matt and Kim perform with only a keyboard and drum kit. This allows them to involve their audience in their jovial sounding tunes and Matt’s excitable vocals in order to produce a unique irony as their lyrics often don’t quite match the overt excitement of their music.

Both Matt and Kim have a love of commercial hip hop and early 2000s techno hits covering Alice DeeJay’s “Better of Alone” in their Toronto show. Having played a set combining covers with their own songs, including “Yea, Yeah” and their most popular song which ended their set, “Daylight,” Matt and Kim provided their fans with a consistent energy and live sound that can easily be mistaken for an album version.

Matt and Kim are wonderful performers and know how to please their crowd. Their lighting display at the Phoenix was theatrical with multi-coloured lights timed according to Kim’s drums which fitted their love of dance parties.

It’s very rare that a group is catchy without having an annoying ‘pop‘ sound. Matt and Kim have grown in popularity through social-networking sites and word-of-mouth because they encompass contemporary sound, sight and lifestyle so effortlessly that it’s easy to say that: Matt and Kim are cool.

The Singing Lamb Tuesday Twelve: Vol. II

September 29th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

The xx

The xx

The xx – “Crystalised”

If it isn’t blatantly obvious to you by now that Britain has no shortage of incredibly talented, effortlessly cool, young bands, then you might need to have your head checked again.  Based on the strength of their self-titled debut album, it won’t be long before South London’s The xx becomes your new favourite Brit band (Arctic who?). Describing their sound is different; but for reference points, think melancholic nouvelle pop with a sparingly used drum machine, combined with lyrics about seduction, isolation and despair in the vein of The Cure, and the almost-whispered, haunting vocals of Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft.  They’ve also turned out a solid remix of fellow Brit buzz band Florence and the Machine’s “You’ve Got The Love”, have been known to cover R&B singer Aaliyah (Remember her?) live, and, why yes…Pitchfork does love them. Catch these guys in Toronto opening up for Friendly Fires at the Phoenix on December 2nd – it might be the last chance you’ll get to seem them at such a (relatively) small and intimate venue – and check out the video for “Crystalised” here.

Gallows – “London Is The Reason”

Frank Carter doesn’t particularly give a fuck if you like him or his band.  The lead singer of U.K. hardcore punk outfit Gallows, is the Johnny Rotten for our generation; a nihilistic, heavily-tattooed beanpole whose penchant for onstage antics (stage-diving, spitting on people, starting fights, getting inked, etc.) almost match his outspoken antics offstage (a brief list of Carter’s targets: NME, racism in Britain, the “band” Brokencyde, and Mickey Mouse.  But luckily for hardcore punk fans everywhere, Carter and the rest of the band – who are rounded out by guitarists Laurent Bernard and Stephen Carter, bassist Stuart Gill-Ross, and drummer Lee Barratt – can talk the talk, because the music they make walks the walk. “Britain is fucked. Grey Britain is all about what’s going on socially, politically and economically in the UK and how it affects us,” Carter explained recently in an interview with Kerrang! as the premise behind the band’s  second album.  You can practically taste the band’s blood, sweat and fury in the relentless “London Is The Reason”, and the solo at about the 2:05 mark of the song is wicked enough to give anyone whiplash. If you missed these guys at Warped Tour, they’ll be opening for (sigh) AFI at the Sound Academy on November 10th.  Somebody give these guys their own headlining tour!

Radiohead  – “These Are My Twisted Words”

What a tricky and curious bunch those Radiohead fellows are.  First they release an unannounced album, available as a pay-what-you-want download.  Then they play the Grammy award ceremony – with a full marching band nonetheless! – an appearance which doesn’t go over well with at least a few people.  Oh, and we can’t forget that head-scratching inclusion of  the stellar “15 Step” on the godawful Twilight soundtrack. So when the blogosphere and message board denizens got in a tizzy over a rumoured new Radiohead EP  that was supposed to be released awhile ago, it had many asking:  is Thom Yorke just crazy, or crazy like a fox?  While we didn’t get a new EP, we got this new above-average song instead, which my friend pretty-accurately described as ‘a distant, sped-up version of [Pink Floyd's“Careful with That Axe, Eugene”.  So to answer the aforementioned question about Thom’s sanity:  a little bit of Column A, a little bit of Column B.  But when we keep getting songs like this, does it even matter?

BLK JKS – “It’s In Every Thing You See (Daytrotter Live Session)”

Nice to see that even Rolling Stone occasionally gets one right.  The quartet – who hail from Johannesburg, South Africa (which, by the way, is home next summer to a little soccer tournament known as the World Cup) – were recently featured on the magazine’s “Bands To Watch” list.  Philly DJ Diplo (who should seriously be considering a job in A&R – the man is good) recently called them the “African TV On The Radio“, and for good reason; their debut album After Robots, incorporates dark, atmospheric guitar-shredding and elements of African music known as kwaito that’ll provide more than a suitable replacement in the face of TVOTR’s hiatus.  The band – lead singer and guitarist Lindani Buthelezi,  guitarist Mpumi Mcata, bassist Molefi Makananise, and drummer Tshepang Ramoba – recently stopped by The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, Illinois to record a session for Daytrotter.  Listen to “It’s In Every Thing You See” and more here.

Matt & Kim – “Daylight (DJ Troublemaker Remix feat. De La Soul)”

When people came up with that “good things come in threes” saying, they probably had Matt & Kim in mind.  Recently the Brooklyn couple’s music video for “Lessons Learned” won the MTV  Video Music Award (insert your own “MTV still plays music videos?” joke here) for  ‘Breakthrough Video’, they performed the original “Daylight” on Jimmy Kimmel, and now we have this nifty remix by the legendary Long Island hip-hop group.  I’ve been listening to this song at least five times a day for the past week and I’ve yet to get tired of it.  This song is so catchy that it makes me want to jump around the room, run through a field of daisies, and crash a car into a swimming pool (Okay, maybe not that last one).  Best line?  “Captain of the hook, but I’d rather play the pirates.”

HEALTH – “Die Slow”

I caught the final twenty minutes of these guys’ set at the packed-to-capacity Bovine Sex Club during NXNE, and it was probably the most frenetic twenty minutes of my life.  It was about two in the morning and I was completely exhausted, yet still managed to be completely blown away by the energy of the LA noise rock quartet. There’s a good chance that you’ve heard these guys without even realizing it.  Remember that Crystal Castles song, “Crimewave”?  The song was originally performed by HEALTH, and the Toronto duo’s version appeared on the band’s remix album, last year’s stellar HEALTH//DISCO.  The band recently released their sophomore album, Get Color (yes, the American spelling), and “Die Slow” is the first single.  If you’ve heard anything by HEALTH before, you know what to expect: buzzsaw guitars, thrashing synths, and incomprehensible lyrics, all held together by B.J. Miller’s powerful tribal drumming.  For those of you who aren’t convinced, check out the video for the song, and be sure to stay till the end for the bloody orgy.

J. Period & K’Naan feat. Kardinal Offishall, Steele and Bajah – “Belly Full (Messengers Remix)”

J. Period & K’Naan – “Relationships Lay (Messengers Remix)”

I recently got the chance to see K’Naan perform at the Ryerson Parade and Picnic this past September, and despite being terribly familiar with his music, I have to say I came away with a newfound appreciation for the Somalian-born, Canadian-bred MC.  He is incredibly talented, down-to-earth and writes refreshingly conscientious lyrics – an increasingly rare trifecta in hip-hop today. So I was quite intrigued when stumbled upon The Messengers: A Tribute to Fela Kuti, Bob Marley & Bob Dylan mixtape project, a collaboration between K’Naan and mixtape DJ/producer J. Period, which pays tribute to the three aforementioned musical icons.  What could have a trainwreck in the wrong hands, turns  out to something quite unique, thanks in large part to the rapper’s charisma and genuine admiration for the men whose songs he’s rapping over (in this case, Marley’s “Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)” and Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay”). I’d give the slight edge to “Belly Full” – K’Naan’s laidback flow is better suited to the funky beats and rhymes of Marley (special mention to Kardinal Offishall, who delivers the killer line, “Instead of Twittering, why don’t you go feed your mind asshole”), but all the songs honour the messages of peace, love and understanding that all three artists have tried to promote.  Hip-hop could use more projects like this.  Download all three mixtapes for free here.

Caving – “Rap’s Grateful Dead”

You aren’t going to hear this one written up in the pages of XXL Magazine, nor is likely to be featured on Okayplayer anytime soon.  But true rap fans need to hear this song – not only because it utilizes a clever sample from Jay-Z’s “Encore” – because this could very well be the future of the mashup.  The man behind Caving is one Andy Dixon, who hails from north Vancouver, and has recently been taking raps accapellas and pairing them with world music beats.  The final results he’s been putting up solely on his MySpace and for good reason to – this shit ain’t exactly legal kids.  But it is a curious approach to the mashup given the popularity of the (for lack of a better term) ‘Girl Talk-ADD’ approach of cramming as many songs as possible into one.  Don’t forget his name, because you haven’t heard the last of it. (via EXCLAIM!)

Blakroc – “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)”

The term “rap-rock” doesn’t usually conjure up the most positive connotations, but damned if The Black Keys aren’t going to try to chase away some of the negative stereotypes associated with the genre that was responsible for (cringe) KORN and (bigger cringe) Limp Bizkit.  Enter Blakroc, the newest project from the Akon, Ohio-based duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, which takes their noisy, swampy blues-rock and pairs it with the finest lyricists from…Wu-Tang? Yes, you read that right, this Damon Dash-helmed project features vocals from several of the Clan’s finest, including RaekwonRZA and nine other hip-hoppers.  The concept seems simple enough; throw these guys in a little Brooklyn studio to lay down some tracks, get them smoking, drinking and cracking jokes, and see what they come out with.  The world will get to hear the results of this interesting musical experiment on November 27th, when the self-titled Blakroc EP is scheduled for release.  If you liked GZA’s remix of the Black Lips’ “The Drop I Hold”, then you’ll love first single “Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)”, featuring Mos Def and Jim Jones. Listen to it and watch some video footage of everyone in the studio over at the very elegantly-designed Blakroc website here.

Arkells – “Ms. Jackson (Outkast Cover)”

So apparently the best rock band to ever come out of Hamilton (Sorry Blackie and The Rodeo Kings!), the Arkells, are fans of Outkast.  Who’d have guessed it?  Last week was the 2nd annual Warchild Canada Busking For Change in Toronto, which sees musicians – including the Arkells’ Max Kerman and Dan Griffin- take to the city streets in the name of raising money for charity. The occasion even inspired them to break out a cover of this “little-known” gem from Big Boi and Andre 3000  – watch it here and catch the whole band when they play back-to-back nights at Lee’s Nov. 27th and 28th.  As for Outkast…reunion in 2010? Please?

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper feat. Yo-Yo Ma – “With a Little Help From My Friends”

Turn the Lights Off, Turn the Lights Off

November 4th, 2008 | By: Guest Contributor

Every Time I Die

Every Time I Die

So it’s only Tuesday, but already I’m feeling pretty stressed about my university workload that is beginning to accumulate. Grammar tests, essay outlines, in-class debates – it all seems to piling up this week, and if I survive until Friday, it’s going to be a small miracle. Luckily, I have a pretty uncommon method that may just help me avoid having a mental breakdown. I’m going to a metal show tonight.

Not just any metal show though. I’d be the first to admit that metal isn’t my preferred listening genre by any means. I don’t own a single Black Sabbath-related article of clothing, nor would I like to discuss the finer points of the new Metallica album with you (but if I was to guess, I’d say that this is pretty damn accurate). Yet, there’s something about a good metal album with southern-fried rock influences, pummeling riffs and drums that you can jump around your bedroom violently to, and lyrics that if you listen really, really hard you can almost make them out. That album for me last summer was Every Time I Die’s The Big Dirty, and the band is finally getting off their asses and are bringing their “November Reign” (how appropriate now that Axl has finally announced Chinese Democracy will be in stores November 23) tour to The Opera House tonight at 7. For those of you not willing to brave the inevitable mosh pits, but don’t mind their music with a bit of volume, check this out.

If you’re feeling something more mellow, Matt & Kim are playing a show with Best Fwends at the Whippersnapper Gallery this Saturday, and you can still pick tickets up at Rotate This. If really good, infectious pop-rock isn’t incentive enough, Mel and myself will also be there to check the show out. Score!

Another band that should make you smile, is New York’s Jesus H. Christ & The 4 Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, who just put out a new album entitled Happier Than You. If the absurdity of the band’s name alone doesn’t do it for you, their horn-drenched catchy pop songs with a wry sense of humour (they have a song called“Connecticut’s For Fucking”), will.

I’ve had the new Bloc Party album Intimacy stuck on repeat on my laptop the past week, and it is easily the best album that I have listened to in months. Seriously, if you are fans of the band and you don’t own this album, you need to run out and get it right now. For those of you who were disappointed with A Weekend In The City, the new songs are more in the spiky post-punk experimental vein of Silent Alarm, with electronic elements that has me definitely hoping this spawns a remix album. Classics-in-waiting include “Mercury”,“Ares”“Biko”“One Month Off”, and “Talons”, which you can watch the video for here.

I almost hate to dirty this website’s good name by mentioning their name here, but last Tuesday, my friend and I were out walking on Queen St. West on a chilly evening when we came across Fall Out Boy playing a live set outside the MuchMusic headquarters. I’m sure most of your reactions were similar to mine – who gives a fuck? – but it just was another reminder for me where I am living, and that so many bands come here on a regular basis. Here, Fall Out Boy playing a free outdoors show is just an ordinary Tuesday in Toronto. Oh, and apparently (not as if you care though) Chicago’s “finest” have a new album under their belts, entitled Folie A Deux. I watched the new video for the first single “I Don’t Care” and I thought it was complete garbage – it’s full of gratuitous product placement (let’s hope Nokia’s cutting them a fat royalties cheque as we speak), shameless guest appearances (hey, is that the guy from Cobra Starship? Pharrell? really Gilby Clarke, you didn’t have anything better to do with your time?) and a supposed political message (or at least that’s what they calling it and trying to disguise the fact that they’re just trying to cash in on the Barack Obama fever sweeping the nation).

That just reminds me that today is election day in the States. It seems that there is a greater interest in Canada about this federal election than the botched excuse of one we had the other week (I’m not bitter). If you are an American reading this, and you haven’t done so, go vote for Obama. Us Canadians (and the rest of the world) will thank you for it. Heck, and if Obama’s personality and politics haven’t impressed you yet, maybe his dance moves will. Hilarious.

Anyways that’s all I have for today. Get out there and enjoy the unusually warm weather that we are having this week for me, as I will be confined to labs, the library and my dorm room. Such is (university) life.

Cheers,
Max

Let’s Chat: Matt & Kim

November 2nd, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

Matt & Kim

Matt & Kim

Singing Lamb: Would you like to update us on what’s going on in the world of Matt and Kim lately?

Matt: Hmm, what’s going with us? Well, other than sleeping in till noon… Actually, I think we just got the final version of our next CD. That’s pretty exciting. Well we’ve got at least three versions that I said would go to the manufacturers’ for promotions, but I’m fucking nuts about getting things to what I consider is right. So it’s gone back again and again. This one may actually be it – but I’ve said that a couple of times before! I think they have to make the CD soon!

Well it doesn’t hurt to be a perfectionist.

No I don’t think…well, to what extent, you know? Our last record, we worked on it for nine days. This, I realized we started working on it last December. So we’re coming up on almost a full year! But no, this is exactly what Kim and I wanted to be able to make. We started, but never had the time or means to do so. But yeah, we have this song called, “Daylight” out and we shot a video for it that will be premiering on MTV next week.

That’s cool!

Yeah, we haven’t made a video in so long – since the “Yeah Yea” video. I don’t even remember when that was…maybe the beginning of 2007?

Probably; sounds right to me.

It’s all a blur!

Well do you think that videos are even relevant anymore?

I do! I think they are. Depending on what direction you take them in. It is relevant. It’s funny because I remember before Kim and I did that video for “Yeah Yea” we had released the album a few months prior but we got so much more attention by just doing that one video than you do a whole album. And things are so based on singles now and things like that and having things like a visual. Even so, people go online and go on your MySpace and look at it. What else are you going to do? There’s something there for you to look at. But yeah, I’m a film guy; I went to school for film. I’m a fan of film and video, so I might be biased!

Maybe; just a tad! But I think it’s just how memorable it is nowadays.

Yeah, before they used to spend so much freakin’ money on videos but now there’s not much money in records so they can’t spend the same amount of money. And before, when they used to have a lot of money, sometimes they just didn’t have an idea; like “let’s just throw a lot of money at it and make it flashy!” But no one even cares about flash that much. And now, I think people are forced to think of a good idea because they can’t spend that much money. Maybe it’s a good thing, maybe people are actually going to think a bit more and appreciate that!

So will be playing a lot of your new material on tour?

We play half and half. Maybe a bit more of the older stuff just because I know when I go see a band, I’d like to see stuff I know.

Mhmm!

But then we’ve done so many tours since we put out that last album that we can’t just keep playing the same songs or else we’d totally get sick of it.

Are you sick of it?

No, no! We wrote the songs, we get to play them, its fun. As a band early on, there was no advertising and it was mostly word of mouth and we were trying to create a base of people who would come back numerous times. So if you’re trying to make people come back for the fourth and fifth time, we have to show them that we’ve got some other tricks to spice it up. A few songs can’t hurt.

So you’ll be back in Toronto in a few weeks.

I guess so!

What have been some highlights the past few times you’ve been in Toronto to play?

Well I remember our last time in Toronto, when we were with CSS and The Go! Team, a big highlight was that we made it through the freakin’ set.

Haha!

Before that, we kept having these technical problems and we were just not making it through sets on their shows. Things were breaking because we were in this bizarre spot where we didn’t get sound checks and we couldn’t work out any issues beforehand and we’d play four or five songs. So I remember in Toronto, after every song we made through, I would be like, “Hell yeah! We’re going to make it through this whole thing!” So yeah, that was a big thing. Oh, and our last time in Toronto, before that, we played with another group of bands…

Are you talking about your first show? I was there! [May 2007 @ the Mod Club - as part of Toronto's annual Over the Top Fest]

Oh really?! Yeah, that was really like my first time in Toronto other than when I was a kid. It was really nice to hang out with those guys (Japanther, Meligrove Band) and we were here for a couple of days. I was thinking, “I’ve got to start getting my paper work for immigrating to Canada!” But when New York City goes under water because of ice caps melting…

Haha, Toronto will be here for you!

Yeah! It was really nice here.

Is there anything about Toronto that you miss sometimes?

Hmm, the problem is when we were back there – maybe you can help me – there was this area where we walked across a park and we were kind of on top of this hill and all these nice, smaller shops. We walked into a musical instrument shop and there were salads on the corner, outside in the sun…I can’t figure out what the heck that area was that we were in!

Ummm…

Well it seemed a kind of cultural area like there were coffee shops and record stores…I have no idea where we were.

There are a couple of places I can think of but I’m not sure.

We were on a hill! Haha, I know I’m being very vague. I’ll just have to ask Eric [Warner, organizer of the Over the Top Fest]. But it’s probably different there now. What is it, winter there?

Nah, it’s quite fall-ish here right now.

Yeah, yesterday I rode my bike over the Williamsburg Bridge to Manhattan in a t-shirt and shorts. There must be something wrong, it’s closing in on November and I shouldn’t be wearing this!

Yeah, there’s definitely something wrong! Also, I’ll let you know if I ever figure out that place you were talking about! [I am 99.1% sure that it's Trinity Bellwoods]

Awesome!

So I have one last question for you – if you were a singing animal, what would you be?

If I was an animal? I’d have to say dog. Well I don’t have a dog, but both Kim and I are dog fanatics. I think it’s partially because we can’t have a dog because we’re touring half the year and we live in a little apartment, but whatever. We’ll go to the dog park and sit outside of it and just look at dogs!

Haha!!

Yeah, so I don’t know if that means that I want to be a dog, or if that’s just part of my dog fanaticism of not having one, but I’d say for both Kim and I we’d fall into that category.

*For more Matt and Kim, make sure to catch them at the Whippersnapper Gallery with Best Fwends and Bocce on November 8th, visit their website and/or be sure to check out their new album, Grand, when it comes out on January 20th!

Kevin Drew and Leslie Feist

Kevin Drew and Leslie Feist

1234, Broken Social Scene no more?

Well at least for Feist, it is. As reported by NME two days ago, our favourite indie-darling-turned-international-superstar, Leslie Feist, has made it quite clear that she doesn’t intend on returning to her musical family, BSS. “It’s not really as interesting for me as it once was,” said Feist, who also had a very publicized (or at least it was in my eyes – as a crazed fan) relationship with BSS co-founder/singer, Kevin Drew. Well, I guess that answers your questions as to who won’t be showing up at the November shows in Toronto. This means, all our hopes lie within Emily Haines, Amy Millan and Lisa Lobsinger to fill in her gaps. Oh dear god. Not that there’s anything wrong with those lovely ladies (because I actually do love each of them and their respective outside projects), but no one will ever sing “7/4 Shoreline” the same way. Time to panic/cry/throw a chair out the window in an angry rage? I think so.

In solo-Feist news, here’s her new video for “Honey Honey” (off of 2007′s The Reminder). I’ve seen better from her, but at least it’s not “1234″ for the 8 billionth time…

Matt and Kim also have a new video out this week for their new single, “Daylight”. As if these two weren’t cute enough already, this video just solidifies how light-hearted and fun this couple is. Watch out for an interview with the band coming soon to a ‘Features’ page near you!

Speaking of news from a couple of days ago, I just wanted to inform Long Blondes fans (not that they haven’t found out already) that the band is no longer together. I was never too big of a fan; I enjoyed their two albums but was never too attached to them, but they will be missed for sure. If you haven’t listened to them before, I recommend you do and pout over what you’ve just missed out on.

If you recall my last blog, I mentioned Magneta Lane; and interestingly enough, I stumbled upon some news (finally!) on the band and their recent whereabouts. According to their MySpace blog, the trio (or is it quartet now? Does the dude count?) will be releasing their upcoming follow-up to 2006′s Dancing With Daggers,Gambling with God in March/April 2009 via Last Gang Records. Their newest single, “Ladybones” have been on their MySpace page for quite some time now, but will soon be everywhere as it was just premiered on The Edge 102.1 today. Exciting!

Also mentioned in my previous post were Katie Stelmanis and Emma McKenna of the now defunct Galaxy. If you actually checked out Stelmanis and thoroughly enjoyed her, then you’re in luck as she’ll be one of three opening acts for Fucked Up’s October 30th gig at Sneaky Dee’s, along with Final Fantasy, $100 and The Vivian Girls. That line-up literally made me squeal like a five-year-old just now. As for McKenna, There’s always her show on Sunday afternoon, which will be accompanied by a brunch – a la Laura Barrett’s CD release-party-style?

Also, weird/random note: Chromewaves is looking a tad different, you see?

Anyway, that will be it for now. I know I’ve stabbed that “no holiday” notion to death by now. But I’M not stabbing it, Ryerson is stabbing it! Homework is stabbing it! Sarah Palin is stabbing it! Okay, that last one made no sense, but I just wanted to say that. Before you proceed to listen to some of the recommended bands, please go and watch the Sarah Palin appearances on SNL – ridiculously amazing! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are my heroes.

Musically,
Melody
