Show Announcement

April 1st, 2010 | By: Guest Contributor

Have you made plans for the May long weekend yet? Going camping, planning to crack open a beer or two, maybe hauling that dusty BBQ out of the basement and firing it up? Let’s be honest though, other than that, there’s not much going on.

If you live in Halifax or Nova Scotia however, you might want to check out Long Live the Queen, a brand new music and arts festival coming this May to the North End of Halifax.

Curated and organized by Halifax musicians and artists, the festival will take place from May 21-23, and will include performances from the likes of Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, Laura Barrett, Rich Aucoin, Julie Fader, The Darcys, Wordburglar, Braids, Ghettosocks, Jenocide, and many more. The festival will also showcase local artists, music videos, and comedy performances.

For more information, including how to get involved as an artist and/or volunteer, you can check out Long Live the Queen’s website or become a fan of the festival on Facebook.

Video: Laura Barrett – “The Wood Between Worlds”

January 16th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

I remembering seeing this new video from Laura Barrett about a year ago at her CD release party at the Tranzac for her 2008 LP Victory Garden. Barrett was attempting to play this song in sync with the video as it was projected to her left on a screen; she didn’t fully succeed but the resulting memory is still great and unforgettable. (Please correct me if this is wrong and it wasn’t actually that video – my memory could just be very skewed) This clip for “The Wood Between Worlds” is dark and eerie, just like the song itself; directed by director extraordinaire Jared Sales. Watch below!

Laura Barrett will be opening for the Magnetic Fields at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on February 8th and she will also be playing with The Bicycles (reunion!!), From Fiction (reunion!!!), Magic Cheezies and Young Mother at Sneaky Dee’s on February 12th as part of Wavelength 500!

Let’s Chat: Laura Barrett

May 5th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Laura Barrett

Laura Barrett

The Singing Lamb: So how was your tour recently with the Phonemes?

Laura Barrett: Great! We played a lot of smaller shows in non-traditional concert settings like an art gallery, a small community art store/espresso bar in the middle of Bruno, Saskatchewan, which is a 550 people population. It was nice; it was very intimate at a lot of shows and we even played a house concert. There were almost no bars, which is nice because we both play mellower music and when you’re in that more intimate setting, people listen more and they’re really attentive and make eye contact with them. Also the pace was pretty solid; we played pretty much a show a night except for maybe three or four nights off.

Is that how you feel about playing the Music Gallery or the Tranzac as opposed to somewhere like the Horseshoe in Toronto?

Yeah, the Horseshoe can be super fun but you have to make contact still, or at least I feel like I have to make contact with people in the audience. And it’s harder when either the lighting is super-charged for a rock show or up on some kind of stage. I love the Music Gallery for its two steps and that’s about how high the stage is. And obviously, the Tranzac front room – it’s really cozy and it’s a beautiful place to play; especially a place where you get regulars coming in who don’t know what they’re going to get.

Yeah, I agree!

It’s just more of a community feel to those gigs. And then again, last week I played some gigs in support of Patrick Watson and they were at thousand-person theatres and that was totally different. There are 750 people in front of me, I can only see 30 and I’ve got to somehow find a way to connect with them. It’s hard but luckily the Patrick Watson audience is very good; very willing to listen!

I feel like you sort of have to do that, especially when you play a song like “Sorting Hat.”

I haven’t been able to play that at the Patrick Watson shows because it just doesn’t make much sense for me to be talking to 11 people in the front row. But meanwhile, at pretty much every show on the road with Magali, I would play that song and it was fun because later and I’ve had people send me MySpace messages about whatever animal they were and it’s just cute! It’s something that I remember because I don’t know who I’m going to call what and I just sort of search around and make eye contact; it’s just sort of one of those really special things.

Yeah like when I saw you at Soundscapes last year! That was one of the more memorable songs you played, in my opinion.

Oh yeah! That’s great; did I call you at one of the parts?

I think so! Something to do with superstitions and reading horoscopes; that was me! Is there an mp3 of that floating around?

I have it but it’s just sort of a demo recording I made. I thought it would be on my Ursula EP but to just one person listening to it; you don’t get the experience of having it be directed at various people. Paper Bag Records really wants that song to be released but on the other hand I feel like it should never be released. There’s a YouTube video of it floating around and that kind of gives away the song, so it’s kind of like “That’s what happens in that song!” In Saskatoon, a guy suggested making a dance version of it where the DJ would shine a spotlight at various people in the crowd and play that song. I don’t know how it would come across…It’s a little too cutesy to be in a dance club, but I could be wrong. I think part of it is just about the live performance; I don’t think a recording would do it justice.

Speaking of remixing songs though, how do you feel about that? There’s pretty much only one remix out there of “Stop Giving Your Children Standardized Tests, Pt. 1″ at the moment.

I would love if more people did it. Right now I’m only reaching out to people I know but I have Ricardo from Oldfolks Home in Winnipeg making a remix and my friend Malcolm from Pete Samples in Montreal, he’s going to do a remix. So I have sent things out there. It’s not enough to make a full remix album but these things are in the works. I’d like to do a remix of my own too. I love it; I think it’s really exiting. Especially since a lot of the arrangements on my album have definite parts that I can see being their own song entirely, like the strings or the marimbas or even just taking the kalimba notes like Josh did on the Earth Sciences EP gives you a lot of things to work with. I’m totally pro-remix. I guess I haven’t gotten to that level of success where I’m having remix contests, although I can probably do one. I guess it has to be a song that’s maybe more regular-sounding? A lot of my songs change tempos so I felt like that would just kind of be weird.

Let’s talk about yesterday. You played with the Hidden Cameras at Queen’s Park as part of the seal hunt protest. You haven’t played with them in a while, have you!

No, but nobody in the Canadian portion of the band has!

How was it to play with Joel Gibb and the band again?

It was great and super fun! Even that arrangement of people was a different arrangement than it has been. Kevin has never played with the band officially before and Maggie McDonald was too busy. She’s working on her masters and she’s at York so the whole strike really delayed things. So in a way it was unconventional, even for a Hidden Cameras set. Like the little boy, I think his name is Matthew; he’s not usually with us. It’s kind of similar to other Hidden Cameras practises of things where we all get together, learn a song and play it pretty close to that same day. Joel trusts the people that he is playing with to get it right. Like Ajay is not a member of the Hidden Cameras but Joel recruited him and Shawn usually plays trumpet but he played guitar; just little things like that. In every other way, it was like a Hidden cameras show though!

Have you been part of the recording of the new Hidden Cameras album?

Yeah, I have been. It’s confusing to even know if songs that I am on are on the album because Joel’s done a lot of recording in Europe as well. I know I’m in the choir for a few songs I played the piano on a few songs. Joel writes so prolifically that I’m not sure if he has three albums ready to go. I know that there is one that he wants to release in the fall. So hopefully that has some of the songs that I’m a part of. I really don’t know. It’s a little secretive and mysterious.

How would you describe the difference between working with the Hidden Cameras and working solo?

With the Hidden Cameras, the major difference is I manage, to a certain extent, what happens with my music but not fully. People, especially on my album, came up with their own parts to some parts of the song; and at the end of the day, its mine, I wrote the song. Whereas with the Hidden Cameras, it’s more free to add something of myself to the songs but have it be Joel’s baby and leave him the responsibilities of all that because it’s his project and I like that dichotomy. I like working with someone else on their stuff and be able to add some thing they may not have thought of and have the same happen on my stuff because the writer has the first germ of the first idea but then they don’t know where it’s going to go and it can take on its own; that’s the main difference.

What about playing live?

Definitely higher energy in the Hidden Cameras because I have the freedom to move around. That’s the only problem, even with the clip-on microphone and the kalimba, I can’t move around too far from the vocal mic because I’m singing every song. In the Hidden Cameras, I sing on a few of them but otherwise I dance around. I’ll just slam on the keys and really be part of the spectacle. I guess with my stuff, I’m a little more neurotic about getting everything right, but hopefully that’s not too much of a constraint in the live show. I move as much as I can, especially when I’m playing bass pedals, I’m rooted to the spot so it’s all about visual energy. Unfortunately I can’t really project a huge visual show. I might experiment with some kind of overhead projection. This summer, I think it’s going to be a good period of writing and coming up with ideas for a stage craft approach to a show, adding more visual elements to it.

So it’s just you and Ajay live, most of the time, correct?

Yeah, and even Ajay is getting busy with writing, he writes for a local TV show called King Kaboom, which a lot of local musicians have played on. He’s also finishing his degree at U of T for English and he’s finishing a short story collection piece. He’s not really involved in the music world; I just dragged him! He knows how to play the banjo and the glockenspiel; I don’t know what instrument he’ll pick up next. It’s been really nice to have him on the road with me but it may not work like that in the future. We’ll see what happens. But yeah, it is mainly the two of us when we play. Just on Saturday, at the Patrick Watson show, it was me, Ajay, Randy Lee on violin and Paul Aucoin on the vibes, so it was a nice, economical little four piece. We might have one big show coming up in July at Habourfront. I’m pretty excited!

We were both part of Trekzac last year, so I have to ask you what you think about the new Star Trek movie!

I don’t know so much about it yet; I know it opens on Friday. Are you going?

I don’t know yet.

I don’t know if I’ll make it to opening day because it’ll be a little crazy. This is so superficial, but the guy who is playing Kirk, I don’t get a read from him.

Yeah, I don’t get a Kirk vibe from him either!

No! I’m not exactly sure. I can’t judge the movie yet but I really like Zachary Quinto! I just caught up on the end of the season 3 [of Heroes].

I haven’t watched it yet!

It’s interesting but you probably stopped watching because it got so ridiculous.

Exactly! I heard this season ended really well so I may just watch it to see what happens.

It’s intriguing!

The first season was so good, but the second season went downhill so quickly.

Yeah and this season’s been so muddled, but Zachary!

I love him! They just added too many characters that you got so lost in it.

I agree! And I mean, sometimes it works out because they can bring them back because you can tie in the loose ends.

But then no one ever dies!

And then you never expect anyone to be fully dead.

Yeah!

Well I’m not going to give anything away but there are more similar things like that. Anyway, so Star Trek the movie – I’m intrigued. I may want to see it at the Oakville drive-in, just some place kind of fun, where it’s half about seeing the movie there and I’ll probably get more excited about the movie too. But I haven’t done much research; I haven’t looked up the premise yet. I’m more excited about this year’s Trekzac exactly! Do you know when it’s going to be?

September, maybe? It was a lot of fun to work on that!

Yeah, and it’s always getting bigger and bigger, and it’s raising a lot of money for the Tranzac too. I feel like I’m not as big of a Star Trek fan as I used to be because there’s not as much of a franchise out there that I really like. And they’re all over now, aren’t they?

I think so; but you never know what the movie can do to help.

Yeah, but how much can you do with Kirk? We’ll see; we know he lives!

True! Last but not least though, if you were a singing animal what would you be?

I would probably be a squirrel!

I love squirrels! Why?

Because, being small and good climbers and just kind of a bit of a scavenger, in a good way. Finding vast vestiges of trees and plants that the city has to offer; I know urban squirrels just eat a lot of garbage. Not in that sense but just with making do with urban trees and urban green space and having a fun tail!

Plants and Animals

Plants and Animals

Do you ever reach Tuesday and have the most disturbing desire to buy a Toonie Tuesday meal at KFC? It’s terrible. I didn’t end up getting it but every so often, I just want to take a bite out of those artery-clogging goodness drumsticks. I’m glad I didn’t get it after all.

Okay, enough grossness for today. Here’s some news; that’s yummier than any kind of fast food!

According to Stillepost, Polaris Prize nominees (though I believe they should’ve won), Plants and Animals are back in town at the Mod Club on May 7th. Tickets are $15.00 and it’s an early show (doors 7:00 pm, show 8:00 pm). This show is 19+.

Bonnie Prince Billy will be at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday May 14th; tickets are $25.00 and will go on sale this Thursday (10:00 am). And yes, this is all-ages.

Maria Taylor is going to be at El Mocambo on April 17th, tickets will be $10 and will also go on sale this Thursday.

Although a venue hasn’t been announced yet, we do know that Depeche Mode will kick off their upcoming North American tour here in Toronto. Probable choices for venues at the moment are most likely the Air Canada Centre, Molson Amphitheatre or something big like. Read more about the band’s upcoming album (Sounds of the Universe, out April 21st) here!

Atmosphere and P.O.S. will stop by The Phoenix on May 6th.

Ladyhawk return to Toronto for a gig at the Horseshoe on April 23, tickets are $12.50 and are on sale this Thursday.

For those who are still relatively interested, British pop-rockers Keane are back and will be at the Sound Academy with Mat Kearney and The Helio Sequence on May 23rd. The show is 19+ and will cost you a hefty $39.50 ($100.00 if you fancy the VIP balcony seating). They go on sale this Friday.

Nine Inch Nails and the newly reunited Jane’s Addiction will be in town on June 23rd at the Molson Amphitheatre.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have not announced any North American dates yet (with the exception of selected music festivals coming up this summer) but they have announced a few UK dates. I’m only letting you guys know this as part of my relentless 24-hour Yeah Yeah Yeahs watch. I will not stop till they announce a Toronto date! Oh, but if you’re tired of waiting, word is that their new album It’s Blitz has finally leaked online. If you feel so inclined to do so, download now. The trio is also on the cover of this month’s Spin Magazine. Now that’s something you can legally pay for in stores right now.

NPR is currently streaming Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone (out March 3rd). Click here to listen! I hope you have your tickets for her upcoming shows at Trinity-St. Paul’s (April 17-18) because it’s been sold out for quite some time now.

Speaking of sold-out gigs, just a reminder that the Born Ruffians and Akron/Family shows at Sneaky Dee’s (March 23-24) have also been sold-out for a while now too. So good luck trying to get tickets; chances are that there may be tickets at the door for these shows. May.

This show is not sold out (mainly because there are no advance tickets; you can only get in with a CMW wristband) but it will surely be insanely packed at the Chart CMW showcases at the Horseshoe. Added to the already fantastic line ups will be Black Hat Brigade on March 13th and Joel Plaskett bandmate, Dave Marsh on March 14th. Both acts will be added onto the end of the showcases, at 3:10 am. It’s going to be an all-nighter, folks.

Laura Barrett is currently spending the month up north, in Yukon. To follow her adventures, read here as she keeps an online account of what she does with Exclaim! Also click here to stream her recent cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Nobody Cares About The Railroads Anymore”!

Happy listening!

Sebastien Grainger

Sebastien Grainger

They always say the best things in life are free – love, friendship, the books in the “Free Books” bin in libraries, and of course in-store performances in Toronto.

Sebastien Grainger will be doing an in-store performance at Sonic Boom on Thursday January 29th at 7:00 pm.

If you’re interested in a show or two today, there’s Laura Barrett at the John M. Kelly Library at noon (by the time I post this, you probably would’ve missed it though, sorry!) and Timbre Timbre at Soundscapes tonight at 7:00 pm. I would love to be at Laura Barrett but instead I’m stuck in a classroom right now at Ryerson. But I will be at Timbre Timbre tonight, so if you’re going, see you there!

In non-free news, this is a reminder that Montreal’s Land of Talk (with Little Scream and Zeroes) will be at the Horseshoe tonight. I won’t be there (by tonight, I will have sunken into a dark hole of depression because of this) but Tech Nerd will be! Hopefully he’ll give us a nice little review on it when he comes back!

Alright, I think I have to get back to this “education” business now. A proper post will come tonight!

Happy listening!

  • Winter Gloves & Ruby Coast @ Horseshoe (February 5)
  • Maylee Todd @ Supermarket (February 5)
  • Green Go @ Sneaky Dee’s (February 7)
  • Hexes & Ohs @ Horseshoe (March 14, as part of Canadian Music Week)

Timber Timbre will be playing an in-store at Soundscapes this Thursday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. It’s the perfect thing to do before you head to the Horseshoe for Land of Talk, Zeroes and Little Scream later on that night. Speaking of Land of Talk, Liz Powell recently officially confirmed her membership in the Broken Social Scene collective. Read more here.

Paper Bag label mates, Laura Barrett and the newly signed Josh Reichmann Oracle Band will be at the Horseshoe on January 28th along with Valery Gore.

In Canadian Music Week updates, Human Highway will be at the Horseshoe on March 13th, whereasMalajube, Dutchess Says, We Are Wolves, and Pas Chic Chic will be at the El Mocambo on the 12th. Appearing and performing at this year’s Indies will be Anvil, Beast and USS. Not as intriguing as last year’s line up of Young Galaxy, Besnard Lakes, Tokyo Police Club and The New Pornographers, but I’m sure more bands will be announced by next month.

Fabrizio Moretti’s side project, Little Joy was recently on Last Call with Carson Daly. Watch the clip here.

Smile Like You Mean It

October 17th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

The Killers

The Killers

“The Killers are bringing their douchestaches and their new album to Massey Hall on Nov 18.”

I’ve been quite stressed out with school work and coming down with a minor cold over the past couple of days, but when I picked up this week’s Eye Weekly and read that (pg. 46 in the concert announcements section, just in case you were curious), I laughed. “Douchestaches” will be my new insult of the month. Thanks. And yes, I notified Tech Nerd to tell you about the show because as much as we all like to hate on The Killers for their douchebagery, I know there are fans out there that would like to know about this upcoming show. Not I, particularly, as $53 is just ridiculous in my mind, but there are those who may want to pay to see the Vegas rockers play in the classy Massey Hall. I just find it weird why they wouldn’t book the ACC instead. Same applied when I read about Finger Eleven and Hedley playing this venue recently. But whatever floats their fancy boats, I guess.

Speaking of not feeling well, quick side note: listening to the thumping beats of Woodhands does not help a throbbing headache. I had to learn the hard way. Laura Barrett on the other hand, works.

Back on track now… My mind is literally all over the place at the moment, so I’m just going to go on a spew of random, yet notable pieces of news:

Islands just released a new video for their song, “Creeper” from their latest record, The Arm. Watch here. To sum it up, it’s weird. Then again, think about it – anything and everything Nick Thorburn does is weird; but strangely wonderful in its own unique manner. If you haven’t already purchased/downloaded/listened to The Arm, I suggest you do it now as it is one of the best albums of the year, in my opinion at least. Don’t believe me? Believe my 75-word review Also, in Thorburn-related news, his side project (one of many), Reefer just released a self-titled mini-album online this week. Interested? iTunes it.

Speaking of releasing albums, my favourite lads, Franz Ferdinand, are apparently finally coming back with a new album called Tonight. Tracklisting below:

01 Ulysses
02 Turn It On
03 No You Girls Never Know
04 Twilight Omens
05 Send Him Away
06 Live Alone
07 Bite Hard
08 What She Came For
09 Can’t Stop Feeling
10 Lucid Dreams
11 Dream Again
12 Katherine Kiss Me

Fingers crossed that a tour in North America will be coming up soon as they are slated to play a handful of European and Australian dates soon. Tonight will be out on January 27th.

More locally, The Diableros will be playing a free outdoors show at PS Kensington at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday October 26th.

The Bicycles are also rolling through Toronto on November 8th at Lee’s to promote their upcoming album Oh No, It’s Love. Soundscapes is also hosting a free in-store 4 days prior to that CD release show, on November 4th at 7:00 p.m.

Must see shows tonight:

  • Mother Mother + Dance Yourself to Death + David Martel @ Lee’s Palace
  • We Are Wolves + Pas Chic Chic + The Wet Secrets @ El Mocambo
  • Vancougar + The Bon + Terror Lake + The Blooming Rosebuds @ Mitzi’s Sister
  • Ten Kens (CD Release) + Chang-a-Lang + Whale Tooth + Sunriser @ Sneaky Dee’s
  • Lights + Everlea @ The Mod Club

I apologize, this list would normally appear on the “Shows” page, but as Tech Nerd mentioned yesterday, that page will finally be up next week, along with many exciting, new features! Also, shout out to my friends Everlea, who are opening for Lights! Haven’t seen those guys in forever, but alas I will be missing them again because I’ll be out of town for the night. Nice guys though!

I think this is getting a little long now… I’ve had a lot built up for the past two days and it just had to eventually explode on this page. Sorry. For now, I wish everyone a relaxing, stress-free weekend! Go out and listen to some music!

Ha… douchestaches.

Melody

Finally!!! The Singing Lamb is born!

October 7th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

Laura Barrett @ Trekzac '08

Laura Barrett @ Trekzac '08

Finally, the Singing Lamb is alive! There’s been so much that I’ve been meaning to post, but do not fear, those wonderful things will start pouring in starting now!

For those who missed out on the Trekzac Festicon on September 27th at the Tranzac Club, shame on you. Not only did you miss some fantastic bands perform (albeit they were only 1-2 song sets – still great though!) but you also missed out on the best Star-Trek themed casino ever! Special kudos to creator/Toronto drummer-extraordinaire, Paul Banwatt for organizing the event. So again, if you didn’t attend this year, please do so next year! http://trekzac.blogspot.com/ Oh and by the way, I (and quite posibly also Graham… but he doesn’t really count) won the championship Parrises Squares at the Trekzac Festicon. So yeah… you missed out.

While we’re on the topic of that, I sure hope you guys caught one of three Laura Barrett appearances in the past two weeks. First off, there was her CD release show at the Tranzac on September 21st, which was quite the fest, what with the delightful brunch that was provided. Then there was her brief musical appearance at Trekzac, in between her duties as the Dabo girl, where she did an adorable rendition of Leonard Nemoy’s“Bilbo Baggins”! Oh dear, how I love that song. And to cap it all off, she also played a free set at this year’s Word on the Street Festival, which I sadly bailed out on because of Trekzac the night before. Barrett has no plans at the moment to return to Toronto, but when she does, I’ll let you know! For now, I’d suggest you to pick up her new album, Victory Garden (Paper Bag Records). For those who love her enough as it is, this album will just build upon that love as Victory Garden is a fuller, more complete record of instrumentation, musicality and kalimbas! And for those who were not fond of her, I truly advise you to give it a listen – I mean, Basia Bulat sings on it too!

Before I steer off to a different topic, I just wanted to say one last thing regarding a Paper Bag Records member. I was aware for quite some time that Woodhands had filmed a video for one of my favourite tracks (from their 2007 release, Heart Attack), “I Wasn’t Made For Fighting”" but I never noticed when it was released until now! I was just casually surfing YouTube, when I stumbled upon this official video on Paper Bag’s page. And I must say… I love it! Maybe I’m just biased because I love the song so much.

I’ll try to keep this first post short and sweet because as much as I would like to continue blabbing on about everything I love right now, I will spare you the pain of reading a long post. I’ll just cut it into bit-sized pieces of melodic joy!

One thing that’s been seriously bothering me at the moment is the new Mother Mother album, O My Heart. – Not to say I hate it or anything though; in fact I quite like it. The album has been such a rollercoaster ride. When I first listened to it, I didn’t like it at all. I thought certain songs were annoying and strange and it actually upset me a lot because I was such a big fan of their first album, Touch Up. But then I realized that O My Heart wasn’t bad, it was just a grower. After the 20th listen, I found everything more catchy and fun rather than irritating. It’s pretty much been the only album I’ve been listening to for the past month. I’ve heard from many people that the critics were not digging it though, which was understandable; but I hadn’t read any of the reviews myself. The review from this month’s issue of Chart was the first. In it, reviewer, Kate Harper writes that the album was bad primarily because it sounded like a carbon copy of the New Pornographers, and more specifically, Dan Bejar. Although I don’t listen to the New Pornographers that much, I can still identify Bejar’s voice – and hot damn, Mother Mother’s Ryan Guldemond does sound like him! Now, every time I listen to O My Heart, that’s all I can think of! And that brings me back, full circle, to the emotion of irritation. My only disagreement with that review though is that I don’t believe Mother Mother’s Molly Guldemond and Debra-Jean Creelman sound like Neko Case and Kathryn Calder. But again, I don’t listen to them that much, so I can’t be certain. If you just finished reading this is either understood none of my rambling or you find me crazy, let me know and/or pick up the album to see for yourself! We shall discuss.

I hope you guys are enjoying the site thus far! More to come, this is just the beginning!

Musically,
Melody Lau
