Delicious Lamb
I don’t remember how sleep feels like anymore; I think what I have nowadays constitutes more as just naps on the subway and resting my eyes for less than five hours on my bed as opposed to actually sleeping. But it’s okay! Because things couldn’t have gone better at yesterday’s Singing Lamb Launch Party!
People came, cake was sweet and the music was sweeter. It took months of planning and stressing over, but Graham and I are thoroughly happy with the event! Hexes & Ohs, The Winter Gloves, Green Go, Sports: The Band and Maylee Todd were all fantastic and phenomenal people for trekking all the way to the Tranzac in the pre-snow coldness. Thanks, guys!
Also, thanks have to quickly go out to the following people for helping out with the event – Cashlyn, Steve, Ralph, Max, Jerry, Braga, and all the friends that stuck around merch and doors! We owe you all! Special shout out to all the Ryerson journalism people that dropped by; I’ll see you around!
Graham and I were supposed to give an elaborate presentation about the site before the Winter Gloves, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time – and also because public speaking is my number one fear, next to monsters and the dark. I’d like to think not showing you the site at the party was better anyway; that way we built suspense and you had to check it out today! I’m strategic that way.
But this is what I would’ve said, more or less:
The Singing Lamb (which was called “Pavement Puddle Stars” in its Blogspot days) was always just a tiny little outlet for me to talk about music I liked, since I didn’t really have anyone to share that with in high school. The music scene in Canada, and more specifically Toronto, has been quite the obsession of mine for years and even if no one read my blog, I just wanted to write things down so someone cruising the internet maybe possibly find me on the 148th page of a random google search (that would have no relevance to my site at all).
Then one day, my dear friend Graham and I had this conversation:
Me: “Yeah, I have this blog site thing…”
Graham: “Awesome, what is it!”
Me: “It’s a Blogspot!”
Graham: “Blogspot? That’s no site, let me make you one!”
True story. So without Graham Robertson, this site wouldn’t have been created and there would’ve never been a launch party! Mainly because I’m terribly technologically challenged to create a site.
(Side note: I love Blogspot! There are plenty of amazing Blogspots that I read on a daily basis!)
Since then, we’ve spent months putting together ideas and writing up blogs. And then when I started attending Ryerson, I finally found some fellow writers that shared a passion for music and were willing to help out with the Singing Lamb project so with their help (and a few other friends), we finally got the site up in October.
The site isn’t meant to talk about the trendiest bands, but to just talk about two things – music in Toronto and music that we genuinely like and would like to write about, regardless of its relevance. And if what we’re listening to at the moment is also huge on Pitchfork or getting airplay on MuchMusic, so be it – good music can be found anywhere. And truthfully, Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” is a fantastic pop song; many just won’t admit it! We provide shows, record store listings and the ancient art of expressing one’s opinion through writing.
…Yeah, I think that speech would’ve been too long and boring. But here it is anyway, in case you were wondering what I was attempting to do with the pen and paper before I walked on stage!
Please feel free to suggest music and criticize things in the comments section and/or through e-mail and Facebook – that’s what I’m hoping for!

P.S. If this site is still existent in a year, I am determined to get a Singing Lamb tattoo of some sort. Just thought that would be appropriate seeing as how the musical notes at the top of the site are a reference to the tattoo I currently have. You can remind me and drag me into a tattoo parlour if I forget!
