Japandroids

Japandroids

I should be writing an essay on Barack Obama…

The countdown to Canadian Music Week (March 11-15) is on, and for Toronto music lovers, this year’s event is set to go down as one of best editions of CMW this city has ever seen. With over 500 bands scheduled to play at 45 different venues, there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. I’m not going to list all the bands/artists playing here, but just look at this list: Bloc Party, Sloan, The Ting Tings, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, The Trews, Holy Fuck, Chad Vangaalen, Arkells, Sebastien Grainger, Slim Twig, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Hexes & Ohs, Hooded Fang, Josh Reichmann Oracle Band, Crystal Castles, USS, Hey Rosetta!, $100, A-Trak, Basia Bulat, Birds of Wales, Brian Borcherdt, CFCF, Cuff the Duke, DJ Sega, Duchess Says, Elliott Brood, Gentlemen Reg, Green Go, Handsome Furs, Holy Fuck, Jenn Grant, Lioness, Lights, Malajube, Mansion, Mother Mother, Nasty Nav, Pas Chic Chic, Quest For Fire, Rebekah Higgs, Jokers of the Scene, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, The Bicycles, The D’Ubervilles, The Golden Dogs, The Novaks, The Hood Internet, The Waking Eyes, Two Hours Traffic, We Are Wolves, Young Galaxy and so, so, so many more! For more details on the above shows and the rest, you can check out the CMW’s official website here or Eye Weekly has a pretty goodguide for you to plan your perfect week of seeing live music.

I’m not one to promote or partake in illegal downloading of leaked albums – but if I were, I’d say that the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is shaping up to be one of my early favourites for the year’s best album. You’re going to have to find them yourself, but tracks like “Dragon Queen” featuring TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe and “Hysteric” (which has serious potential to become the new “Maps”) bode well for It’s Blitz!. If you haven’t marked April 14th on your calendar yet, you should probably do that now.

Speaking of upcoming releases, does anyone else think the hype for the new Handsome Furs (March 10th) and The Decemberists (March 24th) albums has been under-whelming at best? These are two marquee-name bands and yet it seems like there hasn’t been much media attention being paid to either of them. In this month’s issue of EXCLAIM! (which features Malajube on the cover wearing Crayola-coloured outfits), reviewer Dan Sylvester said that compared to the Handsome Furs’ debut album, Face Control is “much leaner, sharper, cleverer and more rewarding.” From the tracks that I’ve heard, including “Legal Tender” and “Talking Hotel Arbat Blues” (which can listen to on the band’s MySpace or here expect more of Wolf Parade guitarist Dan Boeckner’s tight vocals over electronic soundscapes, created by Boeckner’s wife Alexei Perrei on snyths and drum machine. You can catch Boeckner and Perrei in Toronto when they play the Horseshoe on March 13th during CMW. As for The Decemberists

Death To The Throne is one dude from Phoenix, Arizona who has been turning out some shit-hot remixes lately of everyone’s hipsters favourites, including M.I.A., Chromeo, Lykke Li, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. My favourite track however is a reworked version of “Pop Bottles” (a song that I admit is a guilty pleasure of mine) to which he adds an electro back-beat and alters the vocals so that Birdman and Lil Wayne’s voices sound almost unrecognizable.

So for the most part, the soundtrack to the upcoming Watchmen movie (which hits theatres on March 6th) is pretty respectable. For a comic book movie (albeit an untypical one) to have a soundtrack that includes such classics as Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, is an impressive feat. However, there’s one track that’s a black mark on not just the album, but possibly all of music itself. I’m referring to this: My Chemical Romance covering Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row”. I mean it’s one thing to cover Bob Dylan (The White Stripes did it and their versions of “Love Sick” and “Outlaw Blues” are now staples in their concert repertoire), but c’mon, from the band that fucking once wrote a song called “I’m Not OK (I Promise)”? Seriously? Goddamnit, now I’m depressed.

Kings Of Leon have a new music video for their second single “Use Somebody”, which you can watch here. Maybe it’s just the chorus (“You know that I could use somebody/You know that I could use somebody/Someone like you.”), but this song is heart-wrenching for me everytime I listen to it, and it makes me want to give lead singer Caleb Followhill a hug to make him feel better.

I’m going to leave you with some new music, from a band called Japandroids. Hailing from Vancouver, Japanther is the duo of Brian King and Dave Prowse (see photo above), and are living proof that “Japan” bands (see: Japanther, Japanese Motors, etc.) are the new “crystal” bands (see: Crystal Stilts, Crystal Castles, Crystal Antlers,etc.). In fact, with their style of energetic, garage rock (think No Age hooking up with Death From Above 1979 at a Red Bull and vodka-fueled dance party), it’s only a matter of time before this guitar and drums two-piece that sounds like a five-piece is hailed as the new “it” band of the moment. But just listen to songs like “Young Hearts Spark Fire”, and tell me that there isn’t more to this band than an upcoming onslaught of hype. Japandroids will be playing not one, but three shows during Canadian Music Week at the Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, Trash Palace and Sneaky Dee’s (with respective dates being March 13th, 14th and 15th).

Cheers,
Max

Weekend Update!

February 22nd, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon

Here are some random show announcements and other musically-related information that I’ve came across recently, that I couldn’t help but share with you. Enjoy!

If you wanted to see Kings of Leon at the Air Canada Centre on April 21st, you’re unfortunately pretty much shit out of luck. Tickets went on sale on Friday, and according to a Ticketmaster representative that I talked to yesterday, they all but sold out within the first half hour. There may be a few single tickets way up in the nosebleeds for upwards of $70 available, but you’ll have to call around immediately. Or if you have a spare hundred or two – or any vital organs you think you might be able to do without, I’m sure there’s a scalper out there willing to be your best friend. Expect a hustle though – they tried to sell me what was originally a $20 ticket to see Lykke Li for $80 at the Phoenix last weekend. As my friend so eloquently put it, “stupid cool music being popular”.

Looking for something to do this Wednesday? PR firm Pink Mafia is presenting Art’d, a series of previews of art exhibits, photography collections and clothing lines over the upcoming weeks. This week, Shark vs Bearphotographer-to-the hipsters Kavin Wong premieres his party portrait gallery at Czehoski on Queen Street West from 9pm – 2am. Plus the event is sponsored by Ketel One vodka, so you know what that means? Cocktails!

Have you ever found yourself listening to The Rapture and you said to yourself, “Gee, these guys know how to make music that gets people dancing. I bet they’d make great DJs.”? If you have than you’re in luck, as the band’s multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Gabriel Andruzzi will be playing a DJ set at Wrongbar this Saturday, with Toronto’s own (and Play De Record owner) Nasty Nav also on the decks. You can find out more details on the event’s Facebook page. Speaking of Nav, here are some upcoming club shows that might be worth your attention:

Red Bull 3Style National Final feat. Jokers of the Scene @ CiRCA (March 12th, TBA)
- Boys Noize + Nasty Nav @ This Is London (March 19th, $15)
- Diplo @ CiRCA (May 8th, TBA)
- CFCF @ Augusta House (March 20th) and Burroughs Building (March 21)

I know the Perez Hiltons and Entertainment Tonights are covering this story more in-depth, but I just thought I’d throw my ten cents in: Chris Brown is a talentless douchebag and whatever he gets is far less than he deserves for what he did to Rihanna.

“New Zealand…Rocks!!!” Diehard Flight of the Conchords fans might recognize this slogan from one of the tourism posters in their band manager Murray’s office. There must be something in the water, as the amount of talented Kiwi bands making it big overseas these days is steadily growing. Expect an article in the near future, but in the meantime, check out the following bands and let me know what you think: Bang! Bang! Eche!Cut Off Your HandsShocking Pinks and my new favourite discovery of 2009, White Swan Black Swan.

So by now you’ve heard the opening track to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ new album, It’s Blitz!“Zero”. If you’re digging the track and it’s new refined and danceable sound, you’ll definitely love this new track, “Heads Will Roll”, which can be downloaded via Kanye West’s blog now!

And for those who are rooting/not rooting for M.I.A. tonight at the Oscars (for her nomination with A.R. Rahman for the Slumdog Millionaire track “O…Saya”), here’s a nice treat for you - a cover of “Paper Planes” by Pale Young Gentlemen. Thanks to Chromewaves for mentioning this!

Anyways that’s all I have for today, enjoy the rest of your week!

Cheers,
Max

News Update!

February 6th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Ladytron

Ladytron

Quick announcemnents!

Ladytron are returning to Toronto on April 6th at the Phoenix, co-headling The Faint. If you missed their free show during the summer at Harbourfront, I recommend you go to this show. Further details TBA; tickets go on sale next Friday, February 13th.

Also, according to NME.comColdplay will be back in the summer on July 29th.

Kings of Leon are also coming back to Toronto on April 21st…at the Air Canada Centre?

Two final thoughts:
1) Someone please fund the “Send the Singing Lamb to the Vancouver Olympics!!” fund. Please? This is why.
2) Lil Wayne = weird, yet mildly entertaining.

That’s it for now; more posts this weekend!

Musically,
Melody

Give Me Grace and Dancing Feet

January 28th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Bloc Party

Bloc Party

So second semester is well under way and I’ve yet to be completely consumed by schoolwork. However I’m more stressed than ever, mainly with finding a place to live next year and/or this summer, finding a job and several other things. Instead of me sitting here and bitching though, I’m going to share some news with you. Enjoy!

It seems that everyone and their mothers were at The Killers show at the Air Canada Centre last weekend, and though I didn’t feel like paying the big dollars to sit in the nosebleed sections, from everybody I talked to that went it sounded like it was a good show. Such a good show in fact, that it inspired some – names will be withheld to save them the embarrassment – to create a fake Facebook profile for Brandon Flowers so that they could say in their profiles that they were engaged to him. I’ve yet to be terribly impressed with the new album Day & Age, even though I quite like Ocelot’s recent “Human” remix. “Are we human or are we dancers?” Ocelot succeeds in manipulating Flower’s voice so that he sounds like a Daft Punk-esque (I don’t think that’s a word, but we’ll say it is for the purpose of this discussion) robot. However, even though March is still two months away, there is already a growing excitement for the next “big” concert coming to this fair city. You’ve probably heard already that Bloc Party are coming to the Kool Haus for two dates on March 13th and 14th, and tickets are already sold out for the Saturday show. For those of you attending the Saturday show however, it was recently announced that Toronto’s own Holy Fuck will be opening that night. This bit of news made me glad that I purchased my ticket through Ticketmaster way back in December when they went on sale.

Speaking of Bloc Party, the band has a new music video for “One Month Off”. Be warned though – if you have recurring nightmares of your favourite fairytale characters being set on fire and run over by tanks, you may want to stay well away.

I’ve had a few albums either lent or given to me in the past two weeks, so I figured I would share some of the songs off them I haven’t been able to stop listening to. My friend Lauren made me a mixtape, which was heavy on Fleet Foxes and a stellar, reworked version of Kings of Leon’s “Knocked Up”, featuring vocals fromLykke Li. I can’t believe that I missed out on Fleet Foxes the first time, or even second for that matter, but their songs are sprawling, lush and gorgeous. Call me a bandwagon-jumper if you want, I don’t really care. As for Lykke Li, is she becoming the new M.I.A.? It seems that everyone has wanted to sample her, remix her or get her to guest on songs. The latest to pay attention to the Swedish songbird is Lil Wayne’s protege (and former actor on Degrassi!), Toronto’s Drake, rapping over “Little Bit”. It’s not quite as much of a trainwreck as you might think – for those of you that are curious, the song can be found on Drake’s MySpace page.

Another one of my friends received a copy of BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge Volume 3, which gives the double-disc compilation back its good name, featuring originals and covers from everybody from Dizzee Rascal to The Wombats to Pendulum covering Coldplay’s “Violet Hill” (what?). Of course I had to borrow it, and have been listening to it on regular rotation on my laptop. Somewhere in heaven, former BBC Radio 1 DJ and journalistJohn Peel (R.I.P.) is smiling approvingly.

“Apache Rose Peacock” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is my new favourite song to play on Rock Band 2. Just saying

Is Joel Plaskett the most ambitious man in Canadian music right now? Reading this recent article on EXCLAIM!, about his upcoming triple album and Toronto show at Massey Hall in May, I would have to say yes.

Unfortunately I’m going to miss Thunderheist and Shad this weekend playing a free outdoor show in Nathan Philips Square as part of Toronto’s WinterCity festivities, as I’m going to be in London at Western for the weekend, but I hope to check out The Stills the following weekend. More details on both performances can be found at here.

That’s all I have for today, but don’t forget to check back here soon to read my interview that I did withAlexisonfire guitarist and Black Lungs frontman, Wade McNeil.

Cheers,
Max
