Pop Montreal: Day Three – If it weren’t for the language barrier…

October 3rd, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Ghost Bees

Ghost Bees

To begin, we unfortunately had to miss the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal’s Nocturnes performance by TuNeYaRdS due to the place being already packed. We were a bit disappointed and were sad to break our head Lamb’s heart by missing the colourful, freaky show but were soon distracted by bright lava water at a nearby fountain. This made our hearts smile again.

We restarted the evening gently at the lovely Ukrainian Federation with a set by twin duo Ghost Bees. If you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Romy and Sari Lightman live, imagine the eastern European folklore of Decemberists’ lyrics and cross it with Coco Rosie to get a sense of the tales that Ghost Bees weave with their haunting harmonies. These ladies are capable of delivering completely mesmerizing to mellow, sleepy performances and their music is best suited to cozy nooks in the dead of winter with candles blazing. The Ukranian Federation accomplished enough of this intimacy while allowing a large number of people to enjoy the show. Accompanying them on guitar and back-up vocals was Justin Karas, a.k.a. Fall Horsie. The entire showcase featuring headliner Destroyer was presented by Sirius Satellite Radio and CBCRadio3 and can be streamed online here (http://radio3.cbc.ca/).

After a few unintentional detours through the wet wind in an attempt to get across the tracks that run through the north end of town, we arrived at Le Milieu for the next stop in our musical game plan. In the dim light and dark alley we were only assured that we were in the right place by a small sign happily proclaiming YOU ARE HERE! The sketchiest venue of our Pop Montreal experience by far, Le Milieu is a tiny bar with dim lighting located in an old factory. All of about 15 people enjoyed Hannah Georgas’ set—probably due to the venue being so ridiculously remote. Despite the awkwardly small size of the audience, Hannah and members of Said the Whale delivered a strong set comprised of tracks off her 2009 EP release The Beat Stuff.  The title track by the same name, and also “Let’s Talk” and “The National” were expected crowd pleasers.

Practically fleeing from Le Milieu, we headed to Bar St. Laurent II for Lamb favourite, Rah Rah. From Regina Saskatchewan, as is mentioned in their playful hit “Duet for Emmylou and the Grievous Angel,” Rah Rah delivered an awesomely energetic set complete with a bubble machine and confetti! The band seemed to be constantly passing around instruments whilst banging walls for extra percussion. As one wise audience member proclaimed loudly, “It’s just one hit after another!” Favourites were the previously mentioned “Emmylou” and “Tentacles”. Rah Rah’s self titled album definitely needs to find a home in your collection, but the live performance is a must see for the sheer happiness it brings.

The only thing left to do was catch some badly needed sleep. Goodnight moon.

Bagels and good times,

L and C

Let’s Chat: Hannah Georgas

Hannah Georgas

Hannah Georgas

The Singing Lamb: So you haven’t had to time catch anyone so far at NXNE?

Hannah Georgas: No!

Are you planning to?

I want to. But basically, I have to leave at 6:00 am this morning to catch a flight tomorrow morning so it’s kind of iffy. I’ll get to see Said the Whale though!*

You recently worked with Said the Whale on the new album, correct?

Yes, I did! Well I just went in and sang some stuff with them, like harmonies and a few of their songs.

How was it to work with them?

Cool! They’re great, I love that band to death as people and they’re just great musicians and I like their music a lot. It was nice.

I also hear a rumour that part of your backing band tonight will be members of Mother Mother? How did that happen?

Yeah! Well Ryan, the lead singer from Mother Mother is producing my record, so I randomly just asked him one day – because I’m in a transition, looking for a drummer and guitar player – and randomly went ‘So if you want to play with me, you should!’ and he was like, ‘sure’ and I was like, ‘What!? Done!’ So he said, ‘If I’m not busy for the time that you need me then I’ll do it with you’ and it worked out in my favour so it’s pretty exciting because I think he’s amazing. It’s him and then Jasmin the keyboard player and Ali the drummer will be playing with me. And then my bass player. It’s cool!

Describe the vibe of the Vancouver music scene.

Vancouver’s got the west coasty vibe and you definitely feel like a little bit of that surfy, mellow vibe. The climate out in Vancouver has a lot of that kind of music going on and it’s great. I think there’s a lot of great music in Vancouver like Mother Mother; they’re one of them that I love – which is not what I just described at all but still!! Yeah, I think it’s very supportive group of people/musicians out there.

You were originally born and raised here in Ontario though, right?

Yep, in Newmarket. So just a little bit outside of Toronto.

Do you ever miss it here?

To be honest, no! But its always nice to come back and visit for sure and there’s a great scene for music in Toronto; I’ve been back here quite a few times this year. I almost feel like I should stay out here sometimes but I do love Vancouver.

I read on your MySpace profile that you want to marry Jack Black?

Yeah, he’s a funny guy! He’s probably the most hilarious person on this planet. If you know me well, you know that I just love to laugh and I find humour is just a necessity in life. I admire him and think he’s amazing.

What’s your favourite Jack Black movie?

Nacho Libre! And today, Year One comes out and I really, really want to see it so I think when I head back tomorrow I will see it tomorrow night.

So this is your first time playing NXNE?

Yep! I also got to do CMW which was fun but yes, first time at NXNE!

How do you feel about festivals vs. regular shows?

It’s such an exciting time to be playing festivals. There are tons of musicians you get to check out and other interesting things going on so it’s awesome. In a way, the benefits of playing an actual show is having your soundcheck and not being so strict on your 40-minute set and then swipe your stage and move onto the next.

What about small venues vs. big venues? You played the Air Canada Centre before?

I did; back in the day! An intimate show is a really special thing and to play to a really small audience, it’s a better vibe then playing in front of tons of people. But a huge audience is a huge rush and a lot of fun. It totally depends; they’re both a cool things to do.

Any plans on a full-length soon?

Well I’ve just finished tracking for the full length record a couple of weekends ago and we’re going to release some singles off that coming up at the end of this summer/fall…wait, actually that’s a lie. It’s going to be mixed at the end of the summer so definitely fall. And then I’m releasing my record next year. Super, super excited about it!

How will it be compared to your EP?

I think the EP was amazing but there’s definitely a bigger sound to it – really edgy, some really great and cool things we worked on that I’m so stoked for.

Cool, and finally – if you were a singing animal, what would you be?

A singing racoon! My friend and I were just trying to figure out designs for t-shirts and she said, ‘If you were any animal, you’d be a racoon,’ and I was like, ‘Fuck you!’

* After the interview, Hannah Georgas walked down the street to Criminal Records and joined Said the Whale for a couple of songs during the band’s in-store performance.

CD Review: Hannah Georgas – The Beat Stuff

May 25th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

The Beat Stuff

The Beat Stuff

Listening to this album reminds me those of times where you order a single scoop of ice cream thinking it won’t be enough. You’ve munched half-way down the sugar cone and you’re wondering how there’s any ice cream left. You finally finish your last bite of ice cream cone, completely satisfied and thinking that a double scoop is certainly not worth the additional cents. In not so crazy-analogical terms, this album is a perfect example of the quality over quantity debate.

The Beat Stuff is a six-track EP composed by Hannah Georgas, a Toronto-raised, Vancouver-based singer/songwriter. The album is a short and refreshing collection of quality vocals, some finely tuned melodies and excellent rhythmic technique. Her style of music can be compared to artists such as Kathleen Edwards and in some aspects, Jenn Grant.

One of the great things about this album is Georgas’ ability to embody various sides and emotions in only six short tracks. Each track is uniquely crafted and made to make some part of your body pulse to a well defined beat. Tracks on the album that are definitely worth mentioning are the title track with its catchy tune and quirky lyrics, “The Nationalc, a song about breaking up and the thoughts that linger afterward in which it orchestrates itself beautifully, and the second to last track on the album “All I Need” which starts off on a softer level but later builds up to the climax, a heart-pounding eruption of poignant instrumentals and vocals.

Every song on the album is charmed with a mixture of quirkiness and sensitivity, something that is rarely achieved by artists. This definitely proves that Hannah Georgas is a true gem bound to be recognized.

Overall, The Beat Stuff is a short but satisfying [cold, creamy] taste of an album that will surely not disappoint.

News Update!

March 24th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Deradoorian

Deradoorian

It always sucks to read about events that you missed out on but there wasn’t much I could do about this year’s SXSW. I will begin planning my hitchhiking plans for next year though; something along the lines of when Sideshow Bob hung on for his dear life to the bottom of the Simpsons’ car in that one episode. Okay, maybe I need to work on my plan a bit.

Even though I missed out on amazing acts such as PJ Harvey, Camera Obscura and Dinosaur Jr. the band that I was most excited to read about was Toronto’s very own Rural Alberta Advantage (of which a blog accidentally called the Royal Alberta Advantage). Something tells me that the trio’s appearance at this year’s festivities will mark the beginning of something big. Already, they’re receiving fantastic praise from Pitchfork,Brooklyn Vegan and Paste Magazine and now everyone is asking the big question: Why are these guys not signed yet? Even Pitchfork has said “This band could be huge.” Well The RAA are already huge to me, but Pitchfork is right – they are going to be bigger. Congrats, guys!

In other news…

Passion Pit has cancelled their upcoming Canadian tour, so please disregard my news yesterday about Ruby Coast. That is a bummer. (Thanks to nowhere for the tip)

Camera Obscura is going to be back in town on June 27th at Lee’s Palace.

Gregory and the Hawk will be at the El Mocambo on May 2nd.

Metric will be making an appearance (and performing) at The Edge 102.1 studios (228 Yonge St.) on April 14th (the same day their new album, Fantasies will be released). They will also be making an in-store appearance at the HMV Superstore (on Yonge, near Dundas) on April 9th from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm. And last but not least, according to ‘For the Records’, Metric and Holy Fuck are apparently going to be at the Mod Club on April 14th (via Beggars Group Canada) but there has been no mention of this elsewhere. I’ll keep you posted; if this is actually true though, it sounds very exciting!

Holy Fuck will be playing a free show this summer at Harbourfront, as part of the annual Beats, Breaks and Cultures Festival on July 10th.

John Richman and Vic Chesnutt will be at The Great Hall on June 25th.

Jay Reatard will be at the Mod Club on June 29th.

Deradoorian has a new song out called “You Carry The Deed”. Listen to it here!

More of a Dirty Projectors fan than Deradoorian? Well you can listen to their recent set at SXSW here!

Buck 65 has formed a new band called Bike For Three! The band will consist of the MC himself and Belgium’sJoelle Phuong Minh Le (Greeting From Tuskan). Read more about it here.

i(heart)music is offering up live mp3′s of Hannah Georgas’ recent Radio 2 concert. Download it here!

The French Kicks will be at the Horseshoe on April 27th. Tickets are $11.50.

According to their MySpace, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees will be back in town on June 17th and 18th for NXNE. Excellent!

And for those in Mississauga (because I know you’re out there, reading this), the Mississauga Waterfront Festival will be taking place June 19-21 (unfortunately the same time frame as NXNE) this year at Port Credit Memorial Park. The first night will include Sam Roberts and Kathleen Edwards, with Spoons and 54-40 on the second and Bruce Cockburn and Hunter & Collectors’ Mark Seymour on the third.

And playing on Canada Day in M-town will be the one and only Sloan. Pending on the line up for Harbourfront’s Canada Day festivities (as I’m there EVERY year), I may actually be in Mississauga this year. Wow. (Again, thanks to ‘For the Records’ for the news)

Happy listening!

Musically,

Melody
