Hillside Inside 2010

January 19th, 2010 | By: Guest Contributor

Ani Difranco

Ani Difranco

In the spirit of staving off the winter blahs, I’d like to introduce you to (or remind you of) an absolutely lovely festival that takes place in my backyard – an exaggeration, but it is pretty close by. As some may know, the legendary Hillside Festival finds its home at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area and is an annual weekend extravaganza full of swimming, dancing, workshops, and excellent musicianship tied together with the threads of community and environmental consciousness. Truly, the only problem with Hillside is that it takes place but once a year. As a way of tiding us over the unbearably long stretch between summers, the masterminds behind the Hillside concept dreamt up a sister festival, this one being indoors and and taking place during the chilliest season. In its third year running, the (one-day) Hillside Inside Festival will be taking place on February 6th at the Sleeman Center in Guelph, with the likes of Ani Difranco (only Southern Ontario appearance!), Hawksley Workman, Final Fantasy, Martin Sexton, Basia Bulat, Rural Alberta Advantage, Bahamas, Woodhands and many others gathering to kick the snowy weather in the pants.

For more details and tickets, check out http://www.hillsidefestival.ca/

What are you waiting for? Grab your reusable Hillside mug and I’ll see you there!

Review: Owen Pallett – Heartland

January 14th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Heartland

Heartland

There’s always a sense of anxiety listening to a new release from an artist you admire. Part excitement, part fear, but all ears was how I went into Final Fantasy’s (who recently changed back to just Owen Pallett’s) album Heartland. But any concerns I had immediately melted away as soon as opener “Midnight Directives” began.

Heartland is a concept album about a farmer named Lewis and the world of Spectrum he lives in. For an album with such a particular narrative carved out, each song transitions to the next flawlessly just like a plotline of a movie.

Pallett’s brilliant sense of instrumentation and shines through on Heartland more than any of his previous releases, from the thumping march of “Lewis Takes Action” to the more somber mood of “E Is For Estranged”. Stand out track “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt” exhibits Pallett’s ability to perfectly layer full orchestral grandeur with woodwind instruments to come out with a modern classic.

From beginning to end, Heartland is a meticulously put-together piece of art, one of Owen Pallett’s finest to date. I know it’s only half a month into the new year but I’m going to just come out and say that Heartland is hands-down, one of the best albums of 2010.

O Young Cardinals, Nesting in the Trees

June 8th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

Alexisonfire

In case you haven’t been keeping track, there are only nine more days until NXNE madness descends on Toronto. However there’s another countdown going on to another integral part of Canadian music: the Polaris Prize nominations. In case you aren’t familiar with the Polaris, its probably one of the most prestigious prizes that a Canadian artist can receive. Awarded to a Canadian album each year through a voting process by a panel of music journalists, broadcasters, bloggers and other music types, it comes with a cool twenty grand in cash for the winner(s). The most important criteria about the Polaris Prize nominations though? The award is based on artistic merit not record sales, unlike say, the Junos. Which means unless hell freezes over, you’ll never see a Nickelback album nominated for the Polaris (Sorry, couldn’t resist). Past winners have includedCaribou and Final Fantasy’s Owen Pallett, and this year’s Long List (forty albums, that’ll be eventually boiled down to ten, from which a winner will be chosen and announced on September 21st) will be announced on June 15th. Check out the revamped Polaris Prize website here, and feel free to comment below on what Canadian albums you think were the year’s best. To get you started, here are Herohill’s picks for the award. I definitely have to agree with them on Japanther and Joel Plaskett. And check back here in the near future as the Lamb may be running a betting pool on the finalists…

As for NXNE, as the event draws closer there have been a whole slew of late breaking shows announced, and the Lamb will do our best to keep you updated on the going ons. The Drake Hotel, a venue that it looks like I’ll be spending a fair amount of time in this week, recently announced a showcase on Wednesday, June 17th. On the bill include performances from The D’Urbervilles, Lioness and Woodhands, and DJ sets by Famous Players and Fucked Up (yep, you read that right). Not quite sure what a Fucked Up DJ set could entail, but given Pink Eyes & Co.’s reputation for live appearances, this could be quite spectacular. CiRCA will also be throwing a show called Vision (the after-party of the Much Music Video Awards and National Tattoo Convention) on the 21st, with a little help from Lights, k-os, Alexisonfire’s George Petit, Bedouin Soundclash’s Eon Sinclaire, The Stills’ Tim Fletcher and Dave Hamelin, Saint Alvia Cartel’s Ben Rispin and Skate For Cancer’s Rob Dyer, who all will be spinning their favourite tunes.

Speaking of Alexisonfire, in case you’ve yet to see the awesome video for their new single “Young Cardinals” (off the upcoming album of the same title), you can watch it here. Filmed on the Maid of the Mist boat at Niagara Falls (they’re on a boat, motherfuckers, don’t you ever forget), the only way that this video could get more Canadian would be if Wade was holding a beaver while Dallas slowly drizzled maple syrup over himself (I’m sure his hordes of 14 year-old girl fans would find that very erotic). And for a special treat for Lamb readers, here is a download link to check out the yet-to-be-radio-released new track “No Rest”. If anyone asks, you didn’t get in from us though…

As part of Toronto’s CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival (June 16-21), on June 19th at the Royal Ontario Museum, you can check out the sixth edition of Scene Not Herd – a collection of groundbreaking music videos. The showcase includes vids from the likes of Beast, Department of Eagles, Fleet Foxes, N.A.S.A., and this gem from Thunderheist. Unfortunately this thing starts at 9:30 p.m., so chances are if you’re planning on attending, you’ll have to skip out on a NXNE show or two. More details here.

MGMT has a new, predictably awesome video for “Kids”, starring folk singer Joanna Newsom. Watch it here.

I don’t like to throw the word around lightly, but Brooklyn’s The National, have been one of my “favourite” bands since I was introduced to them about two years ago. That’s why I had high expectations going into their sold-out Toronto show at the Kool Haus, a few weeks ago, with two friends of mine from Kingston. Unfortunately this being their first show of the tour, the band showed some considerable rust, which wasn’t helped by an uncooperative microphone. Lead singer Matt Beringer even flubbed the opening to my favourite National song, “Fake Empire”. Some good did come out of the show; including Beringer’s alcohol-induced, mic stand smash and cathartic howling during “Mr. November”, and the debut of several new songs. One of these songs was the tentatively-titled “The Runaway”, which the band performed recently live on Jian Ghomeshi’s QTV. Watch it here.

Thought I’d share with you another Toronto music blog worth checking out, and that’s Jessica Lewis’ music blog RoundLetters. Lewis is a fellow journalism student at Ryerson (represent!) going into her fourth year, and also contributes to ChartATTACK.com and SPINearth.tv. Show some love and check it out.

If you’ve never been to the Imperial Pub before, you have been missing out on one of the city’s best dive-bars. Just on the other side of Yonge-Dundas Square, it strikes just the right balance between sketch and homey (several of my memorable and not-so-memorable nights of drunken debauchery this school year started with “university nights” at the pub’s “Library Lounge”). Either way, it should be a nice fit for a one-off show next Thursday with Belle and Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson, Owen Pallett (wow, two mentions of Owen in one post – that has to be a record) and The Hidden Cameras’ Betty Burke. Facebook event details here.

Thought I’d leave you with what may be perhaps the best faux interview ever. Montreal’s globe-trotting DJ Tiga is apparently a notoriously tough interview, because he enjoys nothing more than taking the piss out of interviewers. Not that it makes my job any easier, but music needs more artists like him. This two-part (Part Iand Part II) fake interview is hilarious. “I said ‘watch me’…you should have seen them watch me.”

Cheers,
Max

Festival Update!

April 24th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

It’s summer time. And of course, with wonderful weather comes the wonderful music festivals. Toronto doesn’t host Lollapalooza or anything (hell, we’re apparently not even hosting the Virgin Festival anymore), but we do have Summerworks and NXNE. Here’s a quick update.

Although the full NXNE lineup won’t be announced until mid-May, a brief teaser was recently released. The following have been confirmed so far by the organizers:

Aids Wolf
Angela Desveaux
Arizona
Awkward I
Benny Crespo’s Gang
Black Lips
Burning Brides
Experimental Dental School
Fake Blood
Film Noir
Health
Kill Krinkle Klub
King Khan & BBQ Show
Little Girls
Little Teeth
Matt and Kim
Midnight Peacocks
Mika Miko
Ninjasonik
No Age
Pink Noise
Svjata Vatra
The Coathangers
The Homosexuals
These are Powers
United Steelworkers of Montreal
Woodpigeon

NOW also reports that NXNE and Luminato will co-present Do Make Say Think, Final Fantasy, and Berlin’sRobert Lippok at Yonge-Dundas Square, performing a collaboration of a soundtrack to the 1919 silent film, “Tales of The Uncanny” on June 11. This event is free and all-ages.

Though no specific venues and dates are confirmed by NXNE, I was able to dig up that Fake Blood will be at Wrongbar on June 20th (via The Windish Agency).

Also, thanks to ‘For the Records’ for pointing out that The Black Lips, Burning Brides and Melissa Auf Der Maur will be playing a free show at Yonge-Dundas Square on June 18th; brought to you by MySpace Canada.

IHeartMusic will be holding a showcase at the Drake Hotel on June 18th, featuring Amos the Transparent, The Balconies, Black Hat Brigade, and Oh No Forest Fires.

Dan Burke’s NeXT-at-NXNE showcase will include Red Mass, The Zoobombs, Catl, The Golden Triangle, The Two Koreas, The Sedatives, “Pizza Party” DJs, Teen Anger, Hexes & Ohs, Revolvers, and the Mark Inside.

Other acts confirmed through various sources are: Ruby Jean and the Thoghtful Bees, Bass Lions, Dinosaur Bones, Megan Hamilton and Volunteer Canola, The Paint Movement, Alphabot! and Parlour Steps.

That is all I can rummage up for now. We’ll keep you posted!

Summerworks is also back this year and via Gracing the Stage, there will be a launch party on May 3rd at the Theatre Centre featuring Bob Wiseman, Nils Edenloff (of The Rural Alberta Advantage), and Foxfire. For more information, click here!

And last but not least, as mentioned at the beginning of my post, this year’s Virgin Festival appears to have moved to Orillia, Ontario. Someone tell me this is a joke. It’s also rumoured to be taking place on August 29-30, but with other festivals such as the Outside Lands Fest and Reading Festival, who the hell is left for V-Fest? Again…this has to be a joke, right? Let’s hope so. Read more about this mystery here.

Melody

News Update!

January 30th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Coachella

Coachella

I usually love living in Toronto but every year there are a few events that just made me wish I was elsewhere – Lollapalooza, South By Southwest, any European festival…and Coachella.

As you may all know by now (by the various news reports from Stereogum and Pitchfork) that Coachella has officially announced their line-up for the 3-day festival held in Indio, California. I’m not even going to bother naming them all, so here’s the list! Damn you, California! It’s bad enough that you have unlimited sunny weather, but now this?!

Pitchfork also reports that Edmonton rapper/ex-Pitchfork writer, Cadence Weapon (a.k.a. Rollie Pemberton) has released his new album Separation Anxiety on his website as a pay-what-you-can deal, a la Radiohead. The album is basically comprised of remixes of other bands’ songs and a live cover of Chad Vangaalen’s “Mini TV’s” with the help of Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy (fantastic track; was originally released/played on a CBC Radio performance a while back). To download it either for free or for a charge, go here!

Speaking of Final Fantasy, Owen Pallett has a new video out for the fantastical track, “Horsetail Feathers” from his latest release, Plays to Please. Watch the official video here! And for an unofficial, but awesome live performance of it, click here!!

The Arcade Fire has a new song out called “Lenin” that will be part of the already amazing compilation, Dark Was The Knight. Stream the song here and read more about the compilation here.

Lenka and Meghan Hamilton will be at the Drake Hotel on Monday February 2nd. I knew about this show for a while now but had failed to mention it because I hadn’t listened to Lenka till last night…I love her now. Sorry for the late announcement! To listen to the Australian songstress yourself, check out her MySpace!

Andrew Bird was on Letterman recently. If you missed it, watch the clip here! His new album, Noble Beast is out now and he’ll be in town at the Elizabeth Theatre on April 3rd. Tickets are still on sale!

DJ extraordinaire, Steve Aoki will be stopping by as part of his tour, but not necessarily in Toronto. His two Ontario stops will include Richmond Hill on March 4th (Nava) and London on March 5th (Club Mansion).

Jon Rae Fletcher will be playing an in-store at Criminal Records on March 14th during CMW. Time is TBA though. I’ll keep you posted!

The Ting Tings’ show, as part of CMW, will be at the Mod Club on March 14th as well.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band will be at The Air Canada Centre on May 7th. Prices are yet to be announced but it won’t be cheap.

Just a reminder that Neko Case tickets for her pair of April shows in Toronto are gradually selling out, so hurry up if you want to go! Opening for Case on both nights will be Crooked Fingers.

That’s it for now!

Happy listening!

Melody

Welcome Back!

Singing Lamb

As much as I enjoy the fast-paced, crowded environment of downtown Toronto, nothing felt better than walking down the streets of a quiet suburban neighbourhood in the afternoon, listening to one of my new favourite bands, Hooded Fang…that was last week. Now, I sit in my bed, coughing my lungs out, praying for the flames of hell to burn a whole in my throat. Being sick sucks. What also sucked was that the Singing Lamb had to be down for so long! I’m so sorry! But alas, it is back and better than ever! A lot of hard work was put into it by Tech Nerd, so if you see him walking around, give him props. And then punch him (for me) for the embarrassingly bad video of me.

Anyway, I’ve done a lot of searching and listening lately in light of my search of bands for the upcoming launch party in January. Bands of all sorts were asked, and even though the process was/is quite tedious (and heartbreaking at times – rejection is always painful), the silver lining to it all was that I was able to learn more about some amazing bands in town. But let’s just cut to the important stuff here. Here are the three bands that have been confirmed (so far!) for the official Singing Lamb Launch Party!!

  • Sports: The Band
  • Maylee Todd
  • Green Go

We’re still waiting on a response, but there’s a good chance that we’re getting some folks from Montreal to play at the show as well…you’ll just have to wait and see who that is! Quick hint: the two potential bands are both featured in this month’s issue of Chart.

I know there’s been a whirlwind of news last week, so I’ll just sum it up as quickly as possible!

The Pipettes lose yet another member, moving them down to two. Seriously, just stop it with the Pipette-switcheroo and release a new record! Read more here.

The Hives are teaming up with Cyndi Lauper for a Christmas single…strange, but true.

What’s even stranger is the group of people in this holiday ad for The Gap. Stereogum says “Jingle FAIL” but I say fuck it, that’s my new Christmas anthem. Rainn Wilson said so.

Speaking of commercials, this makes me cry.

Not so into holiday jingles or chocolate commercials? Want to just stick to simple children’s tunes? Well Tilly and the Wall have it covered. Here’s the new way to sing “ABC”, kids.

The Handsome Furs are releasing a new LP on February 3rd, 2009 entitled Face Control. Here’s the tracklisting:

Face Control:

  1. Legal Tender
  2. Evangeline
  3. Talking Hotel Arbat Blues
  4. (Passport Kontrol)
  5. All We Want, Baby, Is Everything
  6. I’m Confused
  7. (White City)
  8. Nyet Spasiba
  9. Officer of Hearts
  10. (It’s Not Me, It’s You)
  11. Thy Will Be Done
  12. Radio Kaliningrad

Does anyone else love the steamy new photo on their MySpace? Forget Face Control, these two need to learn some body control.

Final Fantasy also has a new video out for “Blue Imelda”, off of his Spectrum. 14th Century EP. Great EP; I recommend “The Butcher”, but “Blue Imelda” is also great. According to Owen Pallett, he will not be playing any shows in Toronto in the new year until he releases his upcoming LP (still entitled Heartland?). Let’s hope that it comes out soon then.

Broken Social Scene (Presents Brendan Canning) has a new video out for “Churches Under the Stairs”, arguably one of the best songs from Canning’s album, Something For All of Us…

Some upcoming shows to be aware of:
Casiotone For the Painfully Alone @ 6 Nassau (November 15)
Elliot Brood @ Lee’s Palace (December 31)
*Thunderheist & Shad @ Nathan Philips Square (January 31)
*The Stills @ Nathan Philips Square (February 7)
Cut Copy & Matt and Kim @ Circa (March 20)

*WinterCity Festival shows, FREE

As for the opening acts for the Stars gigs, those are as follow:
Dec. 11 – The Russian Futurists
Dec. 12 – Gentlemen Reg
Dec. 13 – The Done Me Wrongs

Phew, I think that’s all for now! Feel free to send comments to our e-mails or just chat about music; that’s always a joy!

Musically,
Melody
