Having a career lasting nearly 10 years and counting, Dr. Dog mesmerized all at their Toronto show last Saturday.

The six-piece band from Philadelphia knew exactly how to get the crowd singing and dancing along as their die-hard fans trickled into the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

Favourites such as “Stranger” and “I Only Wear Blue” kicked off the show, supplemented with a fantastic set of spotlights that tour with the band. These guys really care about the aesthetics of their shows and have been built through the reputation of their live shows. There was a minor problem with Frank McElroy’s amp feedback, however, but it was quickly fixed before the band played the inspiring “Shadow People.” The crowd stopped dancing and listened to McElroy, taking in the sound and sheer emotion put into the song. It was an obvious crowd-pleaser that night.

Playing a set consisting of material from older albums and from their latest album Shame, Shame, Dr. Dog alternated between singers, Toby Leaman (bass guitar) and Frank McElroy (rhythm guitar), for different songs. Their unique voices both add depth to their live shows making them a reputable act. They also transitioned from an occasional folkier sound to a more old school rock ‘n roll tune seamlessly during their performance, and as a band they all work very professionally together.

For the first date of their new tour, Dr. Dog delivered a show worthy of praise for not only entertainment purposes, but also for turning a few concert-goers into all-time fans.

Some News…

October 2nd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Before anything else, we’d like to boggle your mind with these two amazing music videos that came out recently:

(1) Maylee Todd’s “Aerobics in Space”

(2) Forest City Lovers’ “Tell Me Cancer”

IN OTHERS NEWS

Born Ruffians recently started their North American tour in support of sophomore album Say It. Not long after this slew of American gigs, the Toronto quartet will be heading out to Europe come November. This week, their latest Daytrotter session finally surfaced to the world wide web. Not only that, the band also released a new EP called Plinky Plonk. Lead singer Luke Lalonde wrote in their blog that the EP included “songs that didn’t make it on the record, an alternate version of one that did and some other odds and ends”. You can get a hold of it digitally, and there will be physical copies from the shows.

Another band that’s also jetting off across the border is Keswick, Ontario’s The Elwins. Bound for quaint Philadelphia, PA, the band leaves tonight to work on their first album with Bill Moriarty, who’s been heavily involved with most Dr. Dog records, and Dr. Dog’s Scott McMicken himself. Shortly afterward, the boys will head to Seattle, WA to do the actual recording at Bear Creek Studio with producer/mixer Ryan Hadlock, who’s also worked with The Strokes, Islands, and Ra Ra Riot among others. Something tells me it’s going to be a good’un. The Elwins also promise to keep us all updated on their blog.

Happy weekend!

Dr. Dog @ Lee’s – Apr 14, 2010

April 16th, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Dr. Dog

Have you ever been to a show so good that the band’s energy exuded through every limb of your body? On Wednesday, April 14th, Dr. Dog performed at Lee’s Palace in support of their latest record, Shame, Shame, released earlier this month.

The band started off with Shame, Shame’s opener “Stranger” with bassist Toby Leaman leading the vocals. Guitarist Scott McMicken, donned in his signature plastic sunglasses and toque, continued with more songs from Shame, Shame and a handful of old favourites from the band’s previous records – Toothbrush (2002), We All Belong (2007), and Fate (2008).

Without much chatter from the band, except after “Unbearable Why”, another Shame, Shame tune, singer and guitarist McMicken added, “We haven’t played that one live before… I don’t think”. Every single song was performed loudly and pitch-perfectly. For a band that sounds so mellow on record, Dr. Dog sure knows how to rock out on stage, accentuated with an insane, blinding light show.

For the band’s encore, Dr. Dog kicked it off with “Jackie Wants a Black Eye” that immediately prompted heartfelt and fist-pumping choruses from the audience singing along to “We’re all in it together now/ as we all fall apart/ We’re swapping little pieces/ of our broken little hearts”. In the end, the boys from Philadelphia left us all gleeful, satiated, and desperate for more as our hearts echoed Dr. Dog’s rapturous music.
