CD Review: Dark Was The Night

Dark Was The Night

Dark Was The Night

Let’s face it – we aren’t exactly living in the greatest of times. We are living in a world that has plunged into a period of economic uncertainty not seen since the Great Depression, of nations ravaged by war and ignorance, and families torn apart by famine and disease. But however cliche it sounds; sometimes out of humanity’s darkest days comes the greatest of art, which brings us a glimmer of hope and the promise that change is on its way. From the free-spirited protest songs against the ill-fated Vietnam War of the late-Sixties/early-Seventies, to the struggles of the British working-class that inspired the punk movement in the 80s, to the backlash to the Bush administration and the chaos and loss of innocent lives in ongoing conflicts in the Middle East – music has always rose to confront the fear, confusion and loss that the times have brought.

Which brings us to this album.

Born of an idea between The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner; recruit the biggest names in indie pop and rock (including Conor Oberst, The Decemberists, Feist, and Sufjan Stevens, among others), and put together a compilation of unreleased, original and cover songs in the name of charity. It was decided that profits would benefit the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS through albums, related television programs and media events. John Carlin, the founder of the Red Hot Organization, was the executive producer for the album. It was an idea that sounded good on paper, and because of the musical calibre of the artists involved, it translates tremendously well on tape. Whereas most charity albums are typically a collection of lazily tossed off b-sides that share no real similar themes, this is a very cohesive album and there are no real duds. Instead of thirty-one individual tracks, you get a double album (or triple vinyl, if you’re willing to spring the extra money for it) of songs that share a common thread and transition effortlessly between each other. Despite the seriousness of the cause they are trying raise awareness for, this is the perfect soundtrack for waking up to the sunrise and spending lazy afternoons sitting in a downtown cafe with a steaming cup of tea in one hand, accompanied by either a good friend or an unfinished crossword puzzle. Dark Was The Night takes its title from an old blues song byBlind Willie Johnson, which Kronos Quartet turns into a faithful instrumental cover, and most of the song choices are deep-rooted in folk music and Americana.

The album’s strongest tracks make nods to our present-day fears; when Regine Chassagne and Win Butler trade verses on Arcade Fire’s “Lenin”, with its chorus of “Cause the money’s all been spent”, they might as well be directly speaking about the pressures and challenges people are feeling from the recession. And if it wasn’t for the underlying horns on Sufjan’s fantastic transformation of “You Are The Blood” (originally by a band called Castanets) – a slightly darker departure from his usually sunny, folf-pop songs with long-winded titles – which clocks in at over ten minutes, you might mistake it for a lost Radiohead track. Yet for such a Brooklyn-centric choice of bands (Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear,Yeasayer and TV On The Radio’s David Sitek – does that man ever pass up on a gig?), its the Canadian artists that make their presences most notably felt on Dark Was The Night. Everyone’s favourite Canadian songbird, Feist, contributes dependably solid vocals to two songs, “Service Bell” with Grizzly Bear and the achingly beautiful “Train Song” with Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. The New Pornographers’ cover of Destroyer’s “Hey, Snow White” is probably one of the best songs that I’ve heard from them – ranking up there for me with “Twin Cinema” and “Sing Me Spanish Techno” – by updating the classic fairy tale for modern times. When the Pornographers’ Kathryn Calder sings, “When the company goes public, you’ve got to learn to love who you are”, you can’t help but feel her emotion. I’d like to also give a special mention to Nova Scotian rapper Buck 65 – who has appeared on several charity compilations, including Warchild’s Help! A Day In The Life Of – who takes the aforementioned “Blood” and turns it into a showcase for his own dark and dense rhymes.

However the final word belongs to the curators, The National. While “So Far Around The Around The Bend” is far from the strongest song on the album, the band prove that they aren’t going to be dwarfed by the talent they’ve surrounded themselves with, and show that they are no slouches when it comes to writing a song. In a recent video interview, they told Pitchfork they had this song “that didn’t really fit” on any album, but it works perfectly here. When lead vocalist Matt Beringer sings, “Nobody knows where you are living/Nobody knows where you are” in his easily-identifed deep baritone, he’s most likely talking about some starry-eyed hipster girl from SoHo. In the context of the cause behind Dark Was The Night, this line could have easily been turned into a statement about the thousands of unnamed individuals suffering with HIV/AIDS living without hope or anyone to care for them – but it never is. So many musicians preach charity to the point where it becomes ad nauseam – this compilation is proof that its possible for artists to support a cause without being over-the-top, and make some beautiful music in the process.

Lamb-cation!

March 3rd, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Young Galaxy

Young Galaxy

Lame phrase, but I like it.

As you can guess, The Singing Lamb is going to take a tiny, miniscule break from the site! Lambs have school work to catch up on too, you know! And don’t worry, by “Singing Lamb”, I just mean me (Melody). The rest of the staff should still be around, posting exciting news and features for everyone! And by “break”, I mean I’ll only be gone for 2 week, max! I’ll still send news updates over to others to post up so don’t worry, the News Updates will still be around!

May as well leave you with some fantastic news updates though!

Breaking news: Death Cab For Cutie will be at the Sound Academy on Sunday April 5th. This is an all-ages show and it’s a pricy one too – $40.50. But as a good side note, Ra Ra Riot and Cold War Kids will be opening.

The Vivian Girls are back, with Crystal Antlers, at the Horseshoe on May 8th.

The Dirty Projectors are opening for TV on the Radio on June 2nd at the Sound Academy. All-ages, $22.50, doors at 8:00 pm.

Lady Sovereign will be at Lee’s Palace on May 1st. 19+, $20.00, doors at 9:00 pm.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart return to Toronto on April 28th at Lee’s Palace. 19+, $10.00, doors at 8:00 pm.

Opening for Passion Pit on their rescheduled show at Lee’s Palace on April 3rd will be Cale Parks and Paper Route. 19+, $10.00, doors at 9:00 pm.

Murder By Death will play the Horseshoe on April 16th. 19+, $13.50, doors at 8:30 pm.

Hollywood Undead and Madina Lake will be at the Phoenix on April 23rd. All-ages, $18.50, doors at 7:30 pm.

Spinal Tap will be at Massey Hall on May 21st – but “Unwigged and Unplugged”. Read more here.

Lonely Dear will be at the Rivoli on May 8th.

Ohbijou’s April 18th show at the Opera House has been postponed as well as its release date. Further details TBA.

And last but not least, Montreal’s Young Galaxy have finally announced a new album! A release date has not been decided on yet but we do know that the new album is called Invisible Republic and the band has a new single out called “Long Live the Fallen World”. The song is fantastic; a slight departure from their debut self-titled album, but still possesses dreamy pop elements, fused with danceable beats and beautiful vocals from Catherine McCandless. To download the track right now, go to their website! The band will preview their new material on tour so I recommend you check out their set at the Horseshoe during CMW (March 14th, as part of Chartattack’s showcase)! Also, look out for a follow-up interview with lead singer, Stephen Ramsay soon!

See you soon and don’t forget – happy listening!

News Update!

Lily Allen

Lily Allen

I am a reality TV show junkie. Is that good or bad? Anyway, my big show of the night was Project Runway Canada. This show was unbelievable the first season; what the fuck happened?! None of the contestants seem to be as talented or memorable as the first season and it’s just a yawn-fest at the moment. Hopefully it’ll get better. But thanks to the gorgeous (and almost robotic) host, Iman for lovely quotes such as this winner, when referring to the cheap quality of a contestant’s dress – “No more hoe dresses, no more hoe trends!”

…AND END RANT.

Lots of concert news coming from Chromewaves today; exciting ones too! Here’s basically what you need to know:

Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains @ Horseshoe (March 6, $10.50)
Julie Doiron @ Horseshoe (March 26, $10)
Ohbijou (CD Release Show) @ Opera House (April 18, $13)
Travis @ Sound Academy (April 21, $34.50)
The Appleseed Cast @ Horseshoe (April 21, $10)
Lily Allen @ Phoenix (April 22, $27.50)
Franz Ferdinand @ Kool Haus (May 4, $30)

Um, heck yes to all of them. Although I’m finding it really hard to justify Franz Ferdinand and/or Lily Allen at the moment because of my recent purchase of Flight of the Conchords tickets – awesome or what! I couldn’t say no to them. They’re too…New Zealand-ish.

Anyway, while we’re on the topic of this month’s Spin cover girlLily Allen, you can stream her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You on her MySpace now. Want more? Here’s a great clip of her performing her latest single, “The Fear” on Friday Night With Johnathan Ross.

In additional concert news…
The Kills, The Horrors and Magic Wands @ Phoenix (May 7th)
Steve Aoki, MSTRKRFT and Crookers @ Guvernment (April 9th)
Marissa Nadler and The Handsome Family @ El Mocambo (April 21st)
Hey Ocean! and Shad @ Mod Club (September 17th – according to last.fm)

The Juno nominees were announced today. You can read them here! Not bad with Plants and Animals, Chad Vangaalen, Fucked Up and Crystal Castles, but Nickleback and Hedley leading with the most nominations? Great Big Sea, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion? Come on for fuck’s sake, Feist won 5 last year! We have far more talented artists that could use that recognition; Nickleback does not need more people allegedly telling them that they’re good. What good would that do for us? For Canada? For humanity?? Our lovely writer, Christine will follow up on this with a blog post this week. Be prepared to hear more angry ranting.

Death Cab For Cutie have their own free, iPhone application. It’s practically the ultimate Ben Gibbard stalking tool. Now you can track him down and possess his heart. Fantastic…can I use it to track down Zooey Deschanel instead?

Pitchfork gives us a brief guide to musicians on Twitter. Like I said on Facebook the other day, I believe Twitter ruins lives and eats your cat when you’re not looking, but hey musicians take that risk and twitt away anyway.Read more here. (I personally love reading Lily Allen’s Twitter!)

According to Exclaim, the guys of Spinal Tap are reuniting! Best news of the night? I think so.

That’ll be all for now!

Happy listening!

Melody

Back It Up, Boys

January 5th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

The Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire

Welcome (back) to the Singing Lamb, everyone!

I’ve missed you all dearly! I know it’s been a month or two since I’ve written a blog, so I may be a little rusty at the moment. Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday though and partied on New Year’s Eve.

In light of the new sight and all its new organizations, I’ve decided to reorganize my posts this year into two types of posts – features and news! Maybe it’s just my own paranoia, but I always felt that the news snippets I throw in at the end of my blogs were weird, so yes, this is just some distinction from when I babble on about miscellaneous news and when I babble on about one particular band I’d like to talk about.

I know that all the Pitchfork’s and all the Stereogum’s of the blogosphere are still whizzing with year-end this and upcoming that, so I’m going to merely sift through all of that and report any actual news that’s been reported throughout the jolly weeks of December…

First off, congrats to She & Him’s Zooey Dechanel and Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard for getting engaged. I think I can speak for everyone I know that this came as a surprise as I didn’t even know they were dating to begin with, but good for them. Was anyone else just hoping that Zooey was really engaged toM.Ward? These rumours are actually yet to be confirmed by either Dechanel or Gibbard’s publicist, so for all we know, this could be an indie episode of Punk’d or something.

For those who are anxiously awaiting something from The Arcade Fire, good news is that they have a live documentary entitled Miroir Noir, bad news is that it won’t be out till March. On the bright side, if you’re the online shopping type, you can pre-order it now on their site and even order a fancy limited edition version, with bonus material and nicer packaging for an extra $15. This was on my Christmas list but alas, I didn’t get it. Guess I’ll just buy it when it comes out. Also, the band has released an unreleased track from 2007′s Neon Bible“Burning Bridges, Breaking Hearts”.

Speaking of new tracks from Montreal bands, 2006 Polaris Prize nominees Malajube has released a new song as well, entitled “Ursuline” from their upcoming album, Labyrinthe (due out February 19, Dare to Care).

You can catch them, along with plenty more at this year’s Canadian Music Week (March 12-14). I must say, the line-up for this festival is getting me really excited – and it’s not even March yet! Highlights to look out for includes (but not limit to) the following: 6 Day Riot, Basia Bulat, Chad Vangaalen, Cuff the Duke, Gentlemen Reg, Ghost Bees, Hexes & Ohs, Hooded Fang, Hey Rosetta!, Human Highway, Jon-Rae Fletcher, Laura Peek & The Winning Hearts, Library Voices, Rebekah Higgs, Spiral Beach, The Acorn, The Rural Alberta Advantage, The Ting Tings, The Weather Station, Vancougar, Women, We Are Wolves, and Young Galaxy(who played a quick set at CMW’s award show, The Indies last year). Just thinking about this makes me crazy; I don’t know about you! I’ll keep you posted on any additions in the upcoming months. Last year, I was the queen of CMW in-store performances (Plants and Animals, Winter Gloves, Laura Barrett, Forest City Lovers, and Immaculate Machine – all in three days), so I’ll also be sure to inform you all when these wonderful in-stores will take place.

No known venues and dates have been announced (with the exception of the Bloc Party show at the Kool Haus on the last day of the festival), but according to ‘For the Records’, Hooded Fang, The RAA, The Magic Boys Who Say No, and Green Go will be playing on March 13th at the Silver Dollar. E-X-C-I-T-I-N-G!

Also mentioned on ‘For the Records’, Bruce Peninsula will be doing an in-store at Soundscapes on February 4 (times TBA?) and the Rural Alberta Advantage will be playing another show on February 22 at Sneaky Dee’s.

Hooded Fang, who will tour briefly with the RAA, will also open for Bishop Allen on January 17 at El Mocambo; tickets are still available at Soundscapes and Rotate This ($10). If not, you can also catch them on Valentine’s Day as part of Wavelength’s 9th Anniversary fest (Feb. 12-15). They will play alongside $100, Brides, The Luyas, and the Element Choir at the Polish Combatant Hall (206 Beverley St.). Tickets to the anniversary shows are only at the door and are either $10 or pay what you can – sweet!

Night one of the Wavelength Anniversary Fest includes Timbre Timbre, Ghost Bees, and Dorit Chrystler at the Music Gallery, with the Diableros and Loitering Heroes later on that night at the Cameron House. Night two features Slim Twig, Bonjay, Child Bite and The Magic at Wrongbar. The fest will close off on the 15th with Foxfire, I Am Robot and Proud, Thank You, and Mi Ami at Sneaky Dee’s. Again, all shows are $10 or pay what you can. Oh, February’s looking good.

Hope that’s enough to swallow in one sitting! More to come – new year, new site, more news! 09′s looking bright and hopeful!

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody
