The Singing Lamb Recommends…

December 17th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Germans

Germans

Looking for a place to hibernate for this week? I know it’s a tad far for most but may I suggest the new, hot venue in town – the Garrison? Yes, I must admit I wasn’t the fondest of the Garrison when it first opened month ago but honestly, this venue just continues to improve and get better every time I go – which is often because everything’s there now, it seems! Here’s a quick run-down of why you must (yes, your hibernation at the venue is a necessity now) go to the Garrison for the next four nights.

Thursday: Lullabye Arkestra, Tropics and special guests. ($10.00, doors @ 8:30PM)

If punk/metal/noise is your area of expertise or just interest, this is the show to be at tonight. I’m not even the biggest noise-punk enthusiast and I know that Lullabye Arkestra has had a hell of a year, even garnering love from Pitchfork. And if that doesn’t sell you, then trust me when I say you won’t want to miss out on the ‘special guests’ of the night. These are two guests that you will wake up in the morning thinking, “Why the fuck didn’t I go!!” if you don’t go. Trust. Me.

Friday: We Are Busy Bodies’ 5th Anniversary Show feat. DD/MM/YYYY, Metz, Mayor McCa, Germans. ($10.00, $5.00 with five canned food donations, show @ 9:00PM)

You have to admit, DD/MM/YYYY has become an essential band to see in Toronto. Whether you like them or not, these guys put on a heck of a show worth checking out. And backed by a bill that’s equally as talented, you really shouldn’t be anywhere else in Toronto tomorrow night. Plus – it’s We Are Busy Bodies’ 5th anniversary! You don’t say no to Eric Warner; that’s just a rule in life (kind of)! Apparently the first 50 people to show up tomorrow night will also receive a free swag bag of albums and whatnot. See, you don’t say no!

Saturday: Spiral Beach, Boys Who Say No, Romo Roto, Heartbeat Hotel ($12.00 in advance, $15.00 at door, doors @ 9:00PM)

This will be Spiral Beach’s last show of the year and who doesn’t want to end the year with a bang, right? Usually, these guys put on an energetic, fun show so just imagine that…times ten. Plus, Boys Who Say No, Romo Roto and Heartbeat Hotel just add to the fun and excitement. This bill just looks better every time I look at it, really.

Sunday: Wavelength 494 feat. Germans, P.S. I Love You, Murder Ford Monument (PWYC, $5-10 suggested, doors @ 9:00PM)

There are two reasons why you need to go to this week’s Wavelength. One: great line-up. If you didn’t get enough of Germans from Friday night, or for some godforsaken reason you missed Friday, this is the perfect opportunity to catch them (again). But the important reason you cannot miss this show is: the announcement of the bands playing the big WAVELENGTH 500 shows!! I know we’ve all been waiting for this moment for a while now and are literally watching to weeks go by like a death clock is staring right at you but this Sunday, the beloved Doc Pickles will finally announce the very special guests playing WL500 which will take place February 10-14! MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW. Cancel all Valentine’s Day plans or move them over so you can come and celebrate. If you work, take four sick days. Do whatever you can. See you there!

Ryerson Rocks…Literally.

December 3rd, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Third Floor Sessions

Third Floor Sessions

I think it’s pretty evident that even though the Singing Lamb isn’t officially based or centralized around Ryerson University many of our writers and photographers (including past contributors) are from Rye High. And I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t possess this so-called ‘school spirit’ that everyone speaks of – until now, that is.

As part of a group of Radio and Television students’ final practicum project, a series of live concerts called Third Floor Sessions was born and has already featured amazing local acts including DD/MM/YYYY, Kay Pettigrew and most recently Gravity Wave.

Every session is conveniently taped so we are able to download and watch them online at spiritlive.net!

Here are just a couple of examples:

DD/MM/YYYY – http://www.spiritlive.net/?q=TFSmp3_ddmmyyyy

Kay Pettigrew – http://www.spiritlive.net/?q=TFSmp3_kaypettigrew

Currently, the series will be wrapping up this school semester with two more shows – Ohbijou this Saturday December 5th at 3PM and The Wooden Sky on December 15th) with more potentially on its way after the holidays.

Here’s the Facebook event for Ohbijou: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=354146965174&index=1

Regardless of school credits or grades, what these guys are doing are phenomenal and if you have some free time this Saturday, what better way to spend an afternoon than at school and with Ohbijou! (Okay, if I was to actually grade this though, I’d give it an A)

M for Montréal is here!

November 18th, 2009 | By: Guest Contributor

M for Montreal

M for Montreal

M for Montreal’s fourth edition showcases some of Montréal’s finest acts and still mix brilliantly the anglo and franco music scenes from all around Canada. That’s the beauty of this event, it brings everyone together! The other good thing about M is that you can actually attend all the shows. It’s made for you to see all these bands (unlike Pop Montreal, for instance). Even if on some nights the showcases are at different places, there’s enough time to bike or walk from the Cabaret Juste Pour Rire on Saint-Laurent down to the Metropolis on Sainte-Catherine or the Café Campus. You even have time to grab some Schwartz on the way or enjoy the greatest vegetarian food at Paradis Végétarien on Saint-Denis and Mont-Royal (or, you know, get some poutine at la banquise on Rachel). So I planned your weekend for you:

Tomorrow November 19th catch Final Flash, The Luyas, Miracle Fortress, The Rural Alberta Advantage, You Say Party! We Say Die! and Think About Life at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire, tickets are 17,75$ at the door. It all starts at 8 :30 and you can dance through the night with the Think About Life DJ set and « surprise guests » after the show. I can’t hide how freakin excited I am for this show. If you can only attend one showcase during M for Montréal, that’s the one.

On Friday November 20th, start the day right (if you have the three day pass, that is) with the M pour Martini cocktail with Mark Berube and The Few and Elisapie Isaac. The cocktail doubles as The Dears’ Valérie Jodoin Keaton’s Backstage book launch. Then head to the Cabaret for Two Hours Traffic, Silly Kissers, DD/MM/YYYY, Parlovr, Silver Starling and Le Matos. The M for Mystery afterparty will be a DJ set by Cadence Weapon and « very very special guests ».

On Saturday November 21st, it’s time to put these high school french classes to good use. The sélection franco showcase starts at 3 with Caracol followed by Québec’s Feist, Marie-Pierre Arthur. You can also catch Automelodi, latest hyped band and telus ad singers La Patère Rose, Géraldine (Don’t miss her! You won’t regret it. She’s the next Duchess Says of stage chaos, I swear) and pop duo Orange Orange. Later that night catch the M pour Metropolis show at the Metropolis (duh…) with Malajube, Melissa Auf der Maur, Champion and this year’s Polaris Music Prize winners Fucked Up. If you’re not tired from dancing around yet, there’s the M for Midnight afterparty at the SAT (don’t forget to RSVP to nightlife magazine beforehand).

The three day pass is insanely cheap (60$) and it gives you access to all the showcases, the M pour Martini cocktail, the panels, the afterparties AND M pour Metropolis. Careful though, there are only 150 available. Train and cheap bus tickets are still available for you Toronto people! I checked that for you because The Lamb always has your back. More information about ticket prices and schedules at http://mpourmontreal.com/EN/index.php.

Have a good weekend now!

Zut Alors,

Christine

Update!

April 6th, 2009 | By: Melody Lau

Hooded Fang

Hooded Fang

Good evening/morning!

News updates will commence again this week, do not fear. The Singing Lamb’s blog section will be pretty dead on the weekends though from now on as I, the Lamb, will adapt the work schedule of humans. Crazy, I know. I still live on a farm with other farm animals while singing Broadway hits between meals; don’t worry, that will always remain the same.

But before I sign off for the night, I thought I’d drop some news!

As previously announced, there are a couple of new in-stores coming up featuring Thunderheist (on April 8th at Sonic Boom) and dd/mm/yyyy (on April 14th at Soundscapes). Well the April in-store fun continues with an in-store on April 18th at Sonic Boom with Toronto’s very own Hooded Fang! For those who either missed out on their last show in town or are disappointed about Ohbijou’s CD release getting postponed (Hooded Fang were slated to open), now’s your chance to gather in a cozy basement and dance! The show is free and all-ages.

Check out their Myspace here!

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody

News Update!

Eric's Trip

Eric's Trip

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, put the blame on those English essays. For those who need their Singing Lamb dose each day, I suggest you check out the Twitter page! It’s mostly mindless ramblings of boredom but every so often, I throw news items up there! Also, I suggest you trek back to read my Juno-live feed – good times were had; and by good I mean drunken and miserable times. If you enjoyed my Juno-tweeting and felt bad for me, you can just make it up to me with a beer the next time you see me at a show. Thanks in advance! (Click on the blue bird on the search bar for more Twitter fun)

Here’s some news for you!

Thunderheist will be at Sonic Boom on April 8th for an in-store performance. It’ll be all-ages, free and from 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm. Fun times guaranteed.

DD/MM/YYYY will be playing an in-store at Soundscapes on Tuesday April 14th at 7:00 pm.

Another option on April 14th would be Metric and Holy Fuck at the Mod Club as that show has officially been confirmed. The show is all-ages and tickets will go on sale tomorrow via Ticketmaster.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Cryptacize will play a show in town on July 8th; a venue has yet to be announced yet.

Attack in Black will return to Toronto for a show at the Horseshoe on May 9th. Tickets are $10.00 and the show is 19+.

As previously reported, Crystal Castles will be at the Sound Academy on July 25th, but it looks like Austrailia’s Cut Copy will join them. This comes as good news who may have missed their recent stint at Circa with Matt and Kim.

Opening for M.Ward at the Phoenix on April 27th will be Chicago’s Joe Pug.

Gooseberry Records will put out an Eric’s Trip tribute album featuring 33 tracks performed by such acts as Dog Day, Rebekah Higgs, Shotgun Jimmy, Laura Borealis and much more. Read about it here!

Download a new track entitled “Land of the Freak” by King Khan & The Shrines (from their upcoming album,What Is?!here. For a good time live, be sure to check them out at the Phoenix on May 12th. Tickets are still available for $15.00 and the show is 19+.

i(heart)music profiles Tune-Yards. Read more about it here or check out her Myspace. Fantastically eclectic and experimental fun for the quirky.

Fiona Apple covers Cy Coleman’s “Why Try To Change Me Now?” Listen to it here.

Click here to listen to the N.A.S.A. remix of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ latest single, “Zero”.

Speaking of remixes, duo Mates of State will release the first in a series of remix EPs, entitled Re-Arranged: Remix Vol. 1.

Another band confirmed for this year’s NXNE is Calgary’s Woodpigeon. Sweet, now I know two…

Happy listening!

Melody
