The Singing Lamb Tuesday Twelve Vol. XI

The Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight Anthem – “American Slang”

I realize I’m a little late coming to this conclusion, but The Gaslight Anthem are a really, really good punk band. I’ve been casually listening to the New Jersey quartet for about a year, ever since my brother played their song “Wooderson”, which appeared on the Vans Warped Tour 2008 compilation. Lately though, I’ve been listening to the band’s incredibly well-received 2008 album, The ’59 Sound, which I haven’t been able to get enough of. Filled with catchy guitar riffs, huge, anthemic choruses, several ballads that tug at the ‘ol heartstrings, and more literary and musical references than you can shake a stick at (including, but not limited to: Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Charles DickensGreat Expectations, Miles Davis, and Tom Petty), I’ve discovered it’s the perfect iPod soundtrack to my early morning runs down Parliament Street and along the waterfront. “American Slang” is the first single off the band’s upcoming third album with the same name, scheduled for release on June 15th.

The Gaslight Anthem will be playing at Osheaga in Montreal this summer and will be at the Sound Academy (!!!) on July 14th.

The Black Keys – “Next Girl”

No one sings about the ladies quite like Dan Auerbach. In the past, the Black Keys‘ lead singer and guitarist has waxed poetic about the girls he’s lusted after (“Girl Is On My Mind”), the girls he’s left behind (“Things Ain’t Like They Used To Be”), and the girls who were just plain crazy (“Psychotic Girl”). At times, his lyrics evoke the spirit of the great American bluesmen such as Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, Howlin’ Wolf, etc. Throw in the powerhouse drumming of Patrick Carney with talented contributors, such as producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse (who worked on the band’s last album, 2008′s Attack & Release), plus a reputation for high-energy live performances, and you have a recipe for success. After taking a break to pursue other projects — Auerbach’s solo album and the duo’s BlakRoc project which featured guest vocals from some of the biggest names in hip-hop — they are back with the fifth full-length Keys album, entitled Brothers. “Next Girl” is a catchy-as-hell, blues-rock barnburner, with Auerbach vowing, “My next girl, will be nothing like my ex-girl”.  Plus, the music video for this song features numerous bikini-clad beauties and a dinosaur puppet named Frank. What’s not to like about that?

The Akron, Ohio duo will be playing an all-ages show on August 3rd at the Kool Haus.

The Dead Weather – “Forever My Queen”
and “Blue Blood Blues”

Young bands, take note: this is how you get a headlining spot at Coachella, not to mention pretty much every other major North American summer festival. The Dead Weather‘s newest album, Sea of Cowards, is in-stores now. And it’s entirely awesome.

Girl Crisis – “White Rabbit”

Zola Jesus feat. Dead Luke – “Somebody To Love”

If there’s a better reference of a song in a novel than Jefferson Airplane‘s “White Rabbit” being used in Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas‘ infamous “bathtub scene” (recreated here in the 1998 film adaptation, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro), than I’ve yet to read it. And apparently I’m not the only one that’s a fan of the pioneering Sixties psychedelic rock band lead by (incredibly badass) vocalist Grace Slick. Girl Crisis is an ongoing collaboration between some talented female singers, including members of Brooklyn bands Au Revoir Simone, Chairlift, and Telepathe, who recently got together to record this blissed-out, dream-pop version of Jefferson Airplane’s ode to psychedelic drugs and Alice In Wonderland. They don’t have a MySpace or website just yet, just a series of YouTube videos of the band covering songs such as Nirvana‘s “Come As You Are” and Sade’s “Smooth Operator”, shot in washed-out Super 8 by Bek Anderson. Zola Jesus is Arizona singer/songwriter Nika Rosa Danilova, who makes lo-fi, experimental, gothic-tinged pop, that fans of Fever Ray, The Knife and/or Siouxsie Sioux will enjoy. Listen to her eerie cover of “Somebody To Love” and songs from her latest EP, Stridulum, over at Danilova’s MySpace.

She and her live band will also be in Toronto for two shows at this year’s NXNE, so be sure to check them out.

Chiddy Bang -”The Opposite Of Adults”

MGMT – “Electric Feel (Keys N Krates x Grandtheft Live Remix)”

Let’s do a quick survey. How many of you out there either bought or downloaded MGMT‘s debut album? I’m willing to bet that most of you, like myself and countless others,  have Oracular Spectacular or at least one of the album’s many singles (“Kids”, “Time To Pretend”, “Electric Feel”) in their iTunes library. Now, of those of you who said yes, how many of you have bought or downloaded MGMT’s second album? (sound of crickets chirping) While Congratulations has yet to catch on commercially amongst fans quite like the first one did, the New York City duo of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden are still getting some mileage (not to mention royalty fees) from the record that Rolling Stone named the 18th best album of the decade. Chiddy Bang are two fresh-faced college kids from Philly,  DJ/producer Xaphoon Jones and rapper Chiddy, who are poised to become one of this year’s biggest hip-hop breakout acts. I don’t know if bloggers use the term “backpacker rap” anymore, but Chiddy Bang definitely have more in common with say Cool Kids or Kidz In The Hall, than they do with 50 Cent or Kanye. They’ve built a steady buzz for themselves, thanks to a stream of free online mixtapes, featuring songs that sample Gorillaz, La Roux, Passion Pit, Radiohead, and others. Bonus points for the Anchorman reference. The second song is a nifty remix of “Electric Feel” that comes courtesy of Toronto-based collective Keys N Krates and Montreal’s Grandtheft. It breathes new life into a tune that’s been everywhere since it came out (via 1 LOVE T.O.).

M.I.A. – “Born Free” and “XXXO”

In case you’ve been living under a rock (and even then, it’d have to be a pretty large rock), M.I.A. is back with a new album (the annoyingly-titled /\/\/\Y/\, which is set for a July 13th North American release), an incredibly graphic Romain Gavras-directed video (which is similar to the video the director did for Justice‘s “Stress”) for “Born Free”, and the album’s first single, “XXXO”, which might be the most poppiest song that Maya has ever recorded.  Judge the new tracks for yourself by heading over to the website for M.I.A.’s record label N.E.E.T. here (be warned though: if you have a past history of seizures, then you’d be well-advised to avoid).

The Hood Internet – “Rude Baptism (Rihanna vs. Crystal Castles)”

Well, well, well, what do we have here? The Hood Internet take an incredibly sub-par single by the Barbadian singer-turned America’s sweetheart-turned gossip rag editors’ wet dream, pairs it with one of the better cuts off the new Crystal Castles album, for a completely unexpected (and awesome) mashup. I don’t know what would constitute a “rude baptism”, but I do know that I’ve found my musical guilty pleasure for the summer, and this one is going to be played at my house parties from now till September.

HEALTH -”USA Boys”

HEALTH like keeping busy. When the Los Angeles noise-rock quartet aren’t touring, creating new music, or making the best videos you’ll never see on MTV (see here, here, and here), they are putting out stellar remixes of their own tunes. Many of the acts that have reinterpreted HEALTH songs have gone on to larger success, including Toronto’s Crystal Castles, Montreal’s CFCF, and Denver’s Pictureplane, among others. The band’s DISCO is one of the finest remix albums I have in my iTunes (save perhaps Bloc Party‘s Silent Alarm Remixed), and come this June 22nd, we will see the sequel. DISCO2 will also feature new single “USA Boys”, which was mixed by legendary producer Alan Moulder (who has worked with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more). Listen to it and check out the track-listing over at Pitchfork here.

K'naan

K'Naan

Because nothing works better for procrastinating studying for exams quite like sharing some music-related news with you…

Ah, the FIFA World Cup. The only international sporting tournament where Canadians can cheer for pretty much any country that they want, and not be persecuted, because let’s be honest – we kind of suck when it comes to soccer. But hey, that doesn’t mean we can’t fiendishly cheer for other teams (myself, I’m going to be playing up my slightly Deutsch heritage – go Oranje! ) and Toronto being such a multi-national city, people can get pretty passionate about the beautiful game. The draw for next summer’s World Cup in South Africa took place last week, and I noticed yesterday that the Adidas store was displaying the snazzy new team jerseys and the official ball in the store’s front windows. WTF does this have to do with music, you ask? Because Somalia-born, Toronto-raised rapper K’Naan’s song “Wavin’ Flag” was selected in September as the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup, and will be featured in online and television commercials leading up to the event. Now we have a video to go with the reworked version of “Wavin’ Flag” – with new soccer-centric lyrics – watch it here. While you’re at it, check out K’Naan performing the song in-studio on CBC’s QTV with Jian Ghomeshi.

Speaking of new albums, rumours from various sources have been flying around on the Internet this week, as to the status of the third Arcade Fire album. Here’s what we do know: there will be a new Arcade Fire album this year, and its being produced by Markus Dravs, who worked on 2007′s Neon Bible. Early speculation suggested a May release date for the album, but now it appears that fans will have to wait until the second half of 2010. The Montreal outfit also are planning to headline some major festivals this summer (including Toronto dates?), but no word yet on where and when these dates will be.

Forty-three dollars is a pretty hefty ticket price, but that’s what its going to cost you if you want to see a double bill of legendary New York City MC Mos Def and British-born, American underground rapper MF Doom, who’ll be performing at Kool Haus on January 27th. Both are touring behind stellar new albums: Def’s The Ecstatic was recently nominated for the Best Rap Album Grammy, while Doom’s Born Like This (featuring production from the likes of the late J Dilla and Californian producer Madlib) received glowering reviews from music critics and fans alike. This bill is sweetened by the additional of local support by Toronto’s http://www.myspace.com/dsisive D-Sisive. Here’s a small taste of what you can expect – Def performing “History” (with Talib Kweli, The Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman and Hayley Dekkle, and The Roots!) on Jimmy Fallon, and Thom Yorke’s remix of Doom’s “Gazzilion Ear”.

Last weekend, I got the chance to catch the second of the Arkells’ two sold-out Toronto shows, and I have to say that I was completely blown away by their live performance. After a solid opening set from Burlington’s Sandman Viper Command (look for my long overdue interview with these guys soon), and an incredibly unremarkable one from St. John’s, Newfoundland’s The Novaks, the Hamilton five-piece hit the stage to the loudest ovation I’ve ever heard a Lee’s Palace audience give a band. They opened up with “Heart of the City”, before playing the rest of their 2008 debut album, Jackson Square, in its entirety. Everything about the songs sounded bigger – the harmonica intro on “No Champagne Socialist”, the “hey, hey, hey!” chants on “The Ballad of Hugo Chavez”, the soaring vocals on “Oh, the Boss Is Coming!” – live than on the record. And when lead singer Max Kerman broke into the chorus from the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby”, during the band’s own “John Lennon”, there wasn’t a person left in the audience that wasn’t singing along. For the encore, the Arkells called on the opening bands to come up on-stage, and proceeded to cover the Temptations’ “Ain’t To Proud to Beg” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”. Want more proof that these guys have moved beyond their “Canada’s best kept secret” status (the phrase that so many music websites and blogs are still using to describe them)? Only hours after I posted a positive review of the show in my Facebook status, my friend who attends the University of Georgia commented, and said that he had heard of them before. The Arkells are definitely getting around, and its a thrill to see this success happen to such a hard-working, down-to-earth Canadian band. Also, if you haven’t seen the band’s literally-themed new music video for “Pullin’ Punches“, then you can do so here.

Toronto folk-rockers The Wooden Sky will be appearing on MTV Live this Wednesday. For free tickets to the performance, email liveaudience@mtv.ca. More details can be found on the Facebook event page here.

If you are fans of “krautrock”; the experimental style of rock music invented in Germany during the 1970s characterized by improvisation and strong, hypnotic rhymes, and made popular by bands including Neu!, Can, Faust and Kraftwerk (who in turn, has influenced a wide list of artists afterwards including Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, Holy Fuck, Radiohead and The Velvet Underground) than you need to check this documentary out. The BBC Four documentary Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany looks at how an entire counter-culture rose from the ruins of post-World War II Germany – fascinating stuff.

That’s it for me for tonight. Back to studying [insert sad emoticon here].

NME Cool List ’08

November 18th, 2008 | By: Guest Contributor

NME

NME

NME is like the obnoxious friend of a friend you have to be nice to once in a while to get into bars without paying for the cover. I hate these people. Last week they published their cool list of 2008, and not so surprisingly, it’s as ridiculous and useless as usual. Here’s the top ten:

  • 10 Caroline Mackay, Glasvegas (new entry)
  • 09 Liam Gallagher, Oasis (new entry)
  • 08 M.I.A. (last year: 11)
  • 07 Caleb Followill, Kings Of Leon (last year: 21)
  • 06 Ladyhawke (new entry)
  • 05 Sam Dust, Late Of The Pier (new entry)
  • 04 Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets (last year: 6)
  • 03 Andrew VanWyngarden, MGMT (new entry)
  • 02 Jay-Z (new entry)
  • 01 Alice Glass, Crystal Castles (new entry)

(check out Stereogum for the 40 other “cool” people)

Oh, dear. I did not know “cool” meant douche bag. M.I.A. is a great artist, so is Karen O but Jay-Z? Really? And there is no need to go on about how delighted I was to see Oasis getting their ass kicked in Toronto (I don’t mean to offend anyone; I do not promote this kind of behaviour. I was just so sick of hearing them brag about how good they supposedly are and that interview where they insult Radiohead was a little too much for me. And apparently for the guy who jumped on Noel Gallagher, too.). This list could’ve been worst, but I sure hope kids don’t plan their year of music on it. And why did Alice from Crystal Castles make the list and not Ethan? Although I’m not big on CC Ethan Kath deserves at least a top ten, if only for his douchy moustache!

Zut Alors,
Christine

Murder, Blank Looks on Girls & Knives

October 24th, 2008 | By: Guest Contributor

Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles

For the past three weeks on my daily walk to class, I have been tortured by a poster. This poster is brightly-coloured and has on it the dates and names of upcoming artists and DJs playing at one of Toronto’s premier nightclubs CiRCA. Yet there’s one date and name on that poster that is particularly taunting, and every day I have to look at it on my way to my journalism labs and politics lectures.

OCT. 24TH – CRYSTAL CASTLES

Usually, I’m happy about my age. I mean there are enough all-ages shows here in Toronto to choose from to keep me contented, and I know enough people to buy the “substances” that being 18 does not permit me to. However, every so often, there is a show that makes me wish I was just one year older. My friends, this is that show.

Love them or hate them (there’s really no middle ground with C.C.), there’s no denying that the duo of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath have been become a fixture on the international electronic circuit, with their unique brand of glitchy synth thrash (which they describe as being influenced by “murder, blank looks on girls and knives”) and reputation for chaotic live shows. When I first listened to the band’s self-titled debut album, I said to myself, “this sounds like the soundtrack to a video game”, but the album quickly grew on me. If you’re 19 or older and I haven’t convinced you to go to this show, please check this out. Also on the bill are Lymbyc System, which you can check out here. Please guys, do it for me.

While I’m on the subject of synth thrash and electronic, I’d also like to recommend a trio of artists. One is a Parisian that goes by the comic book-influenced identity of The Toxic Avenger and like any good electro artist from France’s capital, he perfers to hide his face behind a mask a la Daft Punk. Also from France, is Sexual Earthquake In Kobe (great name huh?), a more post-punk influenced trio that have a song inspired by an actress in that TV series Big Love (you know the one about the Mormon family in Utah). For real, it’s called“Love With Chloe Sevigny” and it’s completely awesome. Finally closer to home, we have Crystal Antlers from Long Beach, California, who have been getting a lot of love from the blogs and music magazines recently – and for good reason to – the song “Until The Sun Dies (Part 2)” is particularly good.

In other Justice-related news, if you haven’t heard the duo’s stellar new 18-minute (!!!) long single“Planisphere” mixed exclusively for Dior Homme’s Spring/Summer 2009(except Dior Homme is French, so it’s actually “Printemps-ete 09″) runway show, you can listen to it here.

Well considering I have two quizzes in class tomorrow and it’s now 2 in the morning, I had best call it a night. Have a good weekend everybody, and I’ll see you back on here on Monday.

Cheers,
Max
