Phoenix

Phoenix

I’ve never been a huge fan of France’s Phoenix but lately, I’ve fallen in love with them and their new album,Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Their super-catchy rock melodies, combined with lead singer’s Thomas Mars’ playful voice and sing-along lyrics make for some songs that will be stuck in your head for days. Don’t trust me? Check out their new video for single “1901″ here; a truly simple yet fantastic video. Also, click here to watch an acoustic performance of album opener “Lisztomania”. I dare you to not sing or hum that the next day.

Bat For Lashes has released a new b-side to Two Suns, titled “Wilderness”. Click here to listen.

As you’ve probably heard already (or witnessed, through the panic session everyone had on Twitter), the Olympic Island Festival (featuring Broken Social Scene, Explosions in the Sky, Beach House, etc) was recently cancelled due to unknown reasons. But as a result, Broken Social Scene will be playing a free show at Harbourfront instead on July 11th. But beware: if you were at the free Crystal Castles show last summer and remembered how packed it was then; prepare for that times two. Maybe three.

No Age remixes Holy Fuck’s “Lovely Allen”. Click here to watch/listen. No Age will be in town for NXNE in June and Holy Fuck will be playing a free show at Harbourfront on July 10th, with the Winter Gloves.

i(heart)music predicts Polaris Prize potentials this year. Read more here. If you can think of any other candidates, let us know! I can probably think of a few; I’ll post them up soon.

Charlottetown’s The Danks will be releasing their new album, Are You Afraid Of The Danks? on June 30th.

Cadence Weapon remixes Woodhands, Chad Vangaalen and more. Read his blog here to download all the tracks!

Happy listening!

Parenthetical Girls

Parenthetical Girls

1. A.R. Rahman feat. M.I.A. – “O…Saya”
It’s really annoying but I have a tendency to point out music (whether good or bad) for various things from commercials to movies. So when I finally watched the Oscar-nominated (and deservingly so too) Slumdog Millionaire on Saturday, the first thing I jumped at was the voice of M.I.A. It’s immediately recognizable, pumped with attitude and unbelievably lovable. “O…Saya” is the perfect song for the movie and A.R. Rahman and M.I.A. make a dynamic team, creating eclectic, fast-paced danceable beats that reflect the fast-paced speed of the film. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you should definitely watch it and especially take note of the perfect usage of “O…Saya” throughout the movie.

Bonus note: Congrats go out to M.I.A. and her newborn baby boy! Glad that she was able to last through this amazing Grammys performance before giving birth! Read more about it here!

2. Flight of the Conchords – Various Songs (Season 2)
Okay, so anyone else loving the second season of this HBO comedy? It’s way better than the first season, and so far, the songs are making me extremely excited for the upcoming album. With songs about “Sugalumps” and male prostitutes, season 2 is a definite must-see. This season, you’ll also see characters like band manager Murray and stalker fan Mel sing and partake in the musical fantasies (literally, for Mel). For more, new episodes of Flight of the Conchords airs weekly on the Comedy Network. You can also catch them at Massey Hall on April 21-22 – get your tickets now!

3. Cadence Weapon – Separation Anxiety
I downloaded this online album a few weeks ago, not having many expectations as I don’t listen to Cadence Weapon often. But as soon as I started listening, I was hooked on Rollie Pemberton’s remixes. Personally, the highlights of the album are not his remixes though. I remember first listening to Cadence Weapon and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) cover Chad Vangaalen’s “Mini TVs” live on a podcast and fell in love with it; I’m glad that this was part of Separation Anxiety as it never gets old. Although the Chad Vangaalen version is equally great, the cover breathes new life into the song by pumping it up and adding new beats and dimension. Another stand-out track from Separation Anxiety would be “Bad Graffiti”. Download the album now as part of a pay-what-you-can deal on Cadence Weapon’s website.

4. Parenthetical Girls – “Unmentionables”
There’s something oddly appealing about the Parenthetical Girls. I find myself quite obsessed with “Unmentionables” lately, from last year’s release Entanglements. It’s swooning strings, zany horns and fantastical melody is like a classic Broadway musical coming to life. It’s cute without being cute; it’s strange but unforgettably addictive. It’s almost hard for me to explain my obsession with this band right now but it’s good. Go to their MySpace to listen to more!

Coachella

Coachella

I usually love living in Toronto but every year there are a few events that just made me wish I was elsewhere – Lollapalooza, South By Southwest, any European festival…and Coachella.

As you may all know by now (by the various news reports from Stereogum and Pitchfork) that Coachella has officially announced their line-up for the 3-day festival held in Indio, California. I’m not even going to bother naming them all, so here’s the list! Damn you, California! It’s bad enough that you have unlimited sunny weather, but now this?!

Pitchfork also reports that Edmonton rapper/ex-Pitchfork writer, Cadence Weapon (a.k.a. Rollie Pemberton) has released his new album Separation Anxiety on his website as a pay-what-you-can deal, a la Radiohead. The album is basically comprised of remixes of other bands’ songs and a live cover of Chad Vangaalen’s “Mini TV’s” with the help of Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy (fantastic track; was originally released/played on a CBC Radio performance a while back). To download it either for free or for a charge, go here!

Speaking of Final Fantasy, Owen Pallett has a new video out for the fantastical track, “Horsetail Feathers” from his latest release, Plays to Please. Watch the official video here! And for an unofficial, but awesome live performance of it, click here!!

The Arcade Fire has a new song out called “Lenin” that will be part of the already amazing compilation, Dark Was The Knight. Stream the song here and read more about the compilation here.

Lenka and Meghan Hamilton will be at the Drake Hotel on Monday February 2nd. I knew about this show for a while now but had failed to mention it because I hadn’t listened to Lenka till last night…I love her now. Sorry for the late announcement! To listen to the Australian songstress yourself, check out her MySpace!

Andrew Bird was on Letterman recently. If you missed it, watch the clip here! His new album, Noble Beast is out now and he’ll be in town at the Elizabeth Theatre on April 3rd. Tickets are still on sale!

DJ extraordinaire, Steve Aoki will be stopping by as part of his tour, but not necessarily in Toronto. His two Ontario stops will include Richmond Hill on March 4th (Nava) and London on March 5th (Club Mansion).

Jon Rae Fletcher will be playing an in-store at Criminal Records on March 14th during CMW. Time is TBA though. I’ll keep you posted!

The Ting Tings’ show, as part of CMW, will be at the Mod Club on March 14th as well.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band will be at The Air Canada Centre on May 7th. Prices are yet to be announced but it won’t be cheap.

Just a reminder that Neko Case tickets for her pair of April shows in Toronto are gradually selling out, so hurry up if you want to go! Opening for Case on both nights will be Crooked Fingers.

That’s it for now!

Happy listening!

Melody
