Some News…

October 2nd, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

Before anything else, we’d like to boggle your mind with these two amazing music videos that came out recently:

(1) Maylee Todd’s “Aerobics in Space”

(2) Forest City Lovers’ “Tell Me Cancer”

IN OTHERS NEWS

Born Ruffians recently started their North American tour in support of sophomore album Say It. Not long after this slew of American gigs, the Toronto quartet will be heading out to Europe come November. This week, their latest Daytrotter session finally surfaced to the world wide web. Not only that, the band also released a new EP called Plinky Plonk. Lead singer Luke Lalonde wrote in their blog that the EP included “songs that didn’t make it on the record, an alternate version of one that did and some other odds and ends”. You can get a hold of it digitally, and there will be physical copies from the shows.

Another band that’s also jetting off across the border is Keswick, Ontario’s The Elwins. Bound for quaint Philadelphia, PA, the band leaves tonight to work on their first album with Bill Moriarty, who’s been heavily involved with most Dr. Dog records, and Dr. Dog’s Scott McMicken himself. Shortly afterward, the boys will head to Seattle, WA to do the actual recording at Bear Creek Studio with producer/mixer Ryan Hadlock, who’s also worked with The Strokes, Islands, and Ra Ra Riot among others. Something tells me it’s going to be a good’un. The Elwins also promise to keep us all updated on their blog.

Happy weekend!

Overheard at Shows: Born Ruffians Edition

May 30th, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

We’re starting a weekly feature (depending on how many contributions we receive), posting the funniest/most ridiculous quotes you’ve heard at shows.

For the first installment, we’re featuring Toronto’s own Born Ruffians, who played 3 different sets (at MTV Live, Horseshoe Tavern, and Sonic Boom) for 3 consecutive days, shortly after coming back from their European tour.

At the “Say It” release party, in particular, people were just saying stuff left and right. Hence, we acquired quite a number of quotable quotes!

Friday, May 28th @ Horseshoe Tavern:

“Well, I started drinking on the bus at five…”

(talking about the Arcade Fire, while lining up)
“The Haiti! I listened to that song and then Haiti happened and I cried.”

(about purchasing scalped tickets)
Guy: Okay, I’ll take it for $20.
Girl: Okay… I’m going to see how much more I can get it for. (Exit.)

(while The Magic were setting up on stage; girl points to Sylvie)
“Her dress is from H&M!!”

(after The Magic’s set)
“I believe in Magic!!!”

(while Born Ruffians were setting up on stage)
Person 1: Who’s the fourth member?
Person 2: Isn’t he the guy from Animal Collective?

(when Luke gets on stage with the rest of the band)
Guy: What’s Slim Twig doing here?

(while Luke sets up his stuff on stage)
Guy: Kiss him now! He’s so close! Now is your chance! KISS HIM!
Girl: Fuck off.

Saturday, May 29th @ Sonic Boom:

(by the stairs)

Girl: I probably know more about Luke than he does about himself.

Girl 1: What’s the lead singer’s name? John? Matthew?
Girl 2: Are you just going to keep naming the dudes from the New Testament?

Overheard any funny/strange conversations at shows lately? Share them with us! We want to hear them. E-mail me at carmel@singinglamb.ca!

Top 5 Albums The Singing Lamb Is Dying To Hear

March 25th, 2010 | By: Melody Lau

Broken Social Scene

1. Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record, May 4th
Questionable record title aside, Broken Social Scene’s upcoming follow-up to 2005′s self-titled masterpiece is one of the only records I am literally dying to hear. Literally. One of my favourite bands ever, something tells me regardless of what this record sounds like, I’ll love it. Yes, I’m a little (i.e. very) biased when it comes to my BSS. I don’t even know what else to say besides HURRY UP, I WANNA HEAR IT NOW.

2. Ruby Coast – Title & Release Date TBA
Aurora indie-pop rockers Ruby Coast have recently announced that they are finally going into the studios to record their much-anticipated debut full-length and all I can say is, about time! A couple of years in the making, since the release of the band’s debut EP Projectable Collections (of which I grew a bit of an obsession over back in November ’08), they’ve enlisted powerhouse producers Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Brian Paulson (Wilco, Beck, Slint, Dinosaur Jr.) to help out. I think its safe to say that I am just drooling in anticipation. Follow the band’s blog for updates from the studio!

3. Stars – The Five Ghosts, June 22nd
I think it’s pretty obvious that we’ve got some die-hard Stars fans here at the Singing Lamb, myself included and so when we all heard of the news that the Montreal pop-rock band is coming back with a new album this summer, tears were shed in excitement and multiple exclamation marks were thrown at the end of Facebook statuses. Check out the band’s website now for videos documenting the making of The Five Ghosts. The band has also announced a tour to preview their new material, including a show at the Mod Club on May 5th. Tickets are on sale now, so jump on ‘em while you can!

4. The Acorn – No Ghost, June 1st
The Acorn was always that band that I heard amazing things about live but I was never lucky enough to catch when they were in town. Thankfully that changed a few weeks ago during Canadian Music Week when I caught them at Lee’s for the Billions showcase, and man, everyone was right – this band fucking rocks. That just fueled my excitement then when I heard about the upcoming release of their new album entitled No Ghost, out June 1st. Recorded in the summer of ’09 at a cottage in Northern Quebec, this will be the band’s follow up to 2007′s Glory Hope Mountain.

5. Born Ruffians – Say It, June 1st
I’m not going to say who, but one of our writers is probably the biggest Born Ruffians fans on earth. So cheering, dancing and lots of screaming took place when the band recently announced details about their upcoming album Say It. Say It is the band’s second full-length and from what we heard at the band’s Canadian Music Week show at the Phoenix, it’s going to be goood. Yep, good with three o’s.

Update: NOVELS available for download

January 11th, 2010 | By: Carmel Garvez

A few months ago, we had told you about NOVELS, an EP put together in less than twenty-four hours by the collaborative forces of Toronto musicians Graham Wright, Will Currie, Jason Sadlowski, Dean Marino, and Luke Lalonde. After almost a year from its creation, NOVELS is now available for download at their website.

If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and download, take a listen, and share the music with friends and strangers.

Born Ruffians recently gave away a physical copy of the EP after asking fans to share their favourite Ruffians-related memory/story. Read them all here. (Mine is #42, hush-hush!)

Band Update: NOVELS

October 5th, 2009 | By: Carmel Garvez

NOVELS

NOVELS (Photo Credit: Lesley Marino)

One teeth-achingly cold and brutally bracing day back in January, five Toronto musicians gathered round Chemical Sound for twenty-four hours of writing and recording. This collaborative project is comprised of Luke Lalonde (Born Ruffians), Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club), Will Currie (…& the Country French), and Chemical Sound engineers, Dean Marino and Jason Sadlowski. The full-day marathon begot “NOVELS”. Details on its release are yet to be revealed, but one thing is for sure – it will be FREE.

There will be about 200 copies available. Graham Wright recently posted on his blog, “Each one was hand screened and put together by us, so they’re all a little different, and they’re all a lot awesome looking.  Soon we’ll start figuring out ways to distribute them, and then we’ll let you all know.  And we’ll probably put the songs on the internet somewhere, too.  Exciting!”

So, keep your eyes peeled!

In addition to the 5-track EP, a documentary of the night is being showcased at Pop Montreal. But for those of us not fortunate enough to attend the fest, don’t fret! You can also watch it over at vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/6488918. Thanks, internet!

News Update!

Plants and Animals

Plants and Animals

Do you ever reach Tuesday and have the most disturbing desire to buy a Toonie Tuesday meal at KFC? It’s terrible. I didn’t end up getting it but every so often, I just want to take a bite out of those artery-clogging goodness drumsticks. I’m glad I didn’t get it after all.

Okay, enough grossness for today. Here’s some news; that’s yummier than any kind of fast food!

According to Stillepost, Polaris Prize nominees (though I believe they should’ve won), Plants and Animals are back in town at the Mod Club on May 7th. Tickets are $15.00 and it’s an early show (doors 7:00 pm, show 8:00 pm). This show is 19+.

Bonnie Prince Billy will be at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday May 14th; tickets are $25.00 and will go on sale this Thursday (10:00 am). And yes, this is all-ages.

Maria Taylor is going to be at El Mocambo on April 17th, tickets will be $10 and will also go on sale this Thursday.

Although a venue hasn’t been announced yet, we do know that Depeche Mode will kick off their upcoming North American tour here in Toronto. Probable choices for venues at the moment are most likely the Air Canada Centre, Molson Amphitheatre or something big like. Read more about the band’s upcoming album (Sounds of the Universe, out April 21st) here!

Atmosphere and P.O.S. will stop by The Phoenix on May 6th.

Ladyhawk return to Toronto for a gig at the Horseshoe on April 23, tickets are $12.50 and are on sale this Thursday.

For those who are still relatively interested, British pop-rockers Keane are back and will be at the Sound Academy with Mat Kearney and The Helio Sequence on May 23rd. The show is 19+ and will cost you a hefty $39.50 ($100.00 if you fancy the VIP balcony seating). They go on sale this Friday.

Nine Inch Nails and the newly reunited Jane’s Addiction will be in town on June 23rd at the Molson Amphitheatre.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have not announced any North American dates yet (with the exception of selected music festivals coming up this summer) but they have announced a few UK dates. I’m only letting you guys know this as part of my relentless 24-hour Yeah Yeah Yeahs watch. I will not stop till they announce a Toronto date! Oh, but if you’re tired of waiting, word is that their new album It’s Blitz has finally leaked online. If you feel so inclined to do so, download now. The trio is also on the cover of this month’s Spin Magazine. Now that’s something you can legally pay for in stores right now.

NPR is currently streaming Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone (out March 3rd). Click here to listen! I hope you have your tickets for her upcoming shows at Trinity-St. Paul’s (April 17-18) because it’s been sold out for quite some time now.

Speaking of sold-out gigs, just a reminder that the Born Ruffians and Akron/Family shows at Sneaky Dee’s (March 23-24) have also been sold-out for a while now too. So good luck trying to get tickets; chances are that there may be tickets at the door for these shows. May.

This show is not sold out (mainly because there are no advance tickets; you can only get in with a CMW wristband) but it will surely be insanely packed at the Chart CMW showcases at the Horseshoe. Added to the already fantastic line ups will be Black Hat Brigade on March 13th and Joel Plaskett bandmate, Dave Marsh on March 14th. Both acts will be added onto the end of the showcases, at 3:10 am. It’s going to be an all-nighter, folks.

Laura Barrett is currently spending the month up north, in Yukon. To follow her adventures, read here as she keeps an online account of what she does with Exclaim! Also click here to stream her recent cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Nobody Cares About The Railroads Anymore”!

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody

Born Ruffians

Born Ruffians

One quick announcement:

Born Ruffians and Akron/Family will be at Sneaky Dee’s on Tuesday March 24th (as reported on Stillepost). Tickets will be available at Rotate This, Soundscapes and ticketweb.ca; no word on the price but this will probably be 19+ and doors are at 9:00 pm.

I know it’s too early to think about this now, but I suggest you mark your calendars before you forget! If the Born Ruffians’ last show was any indication, tickets for this upcoming show will sell like hotcakes!

I swear to Martha Stewart that proper posts will be posted tomorrow! I apologize for the lack of posts (there are usually a tad more) as I’m still getting adjusted at school and am currently busy with a new internship. So things are getting a bit crazy around here. But do not fear, there are other writers here at the Lamb and I’m sure you’re sick of my babbling anyway!

See you around! Bishop Allen/Hooded Fang/Electric Owl on Saturday? I’ll be there!

Happy listening!

Musically,
Melody
