Optimistic

Spin Magazine, circa 2001

Spin Magazine, circa 2001

Fatboy Slim? Papa Roach? Erykah Badu?!

Oh the sweet, sweet times of February 2001. I’ve recently developed quite the addiction to selling my old magazines to the wonderful world of BMV. Yes, I’m just a tad (and by tad, I mean VERY) poor and just knowing that I’m sitting on a goldmine of cash in my room is giving me a glimmer of hope. Anyway, in addition to my selling addiction, I’ve also developed a new buying addiction – old issues of magazines at BMV. Very complimentary to each other, no? So a couple of days ago, I picked up a Feb. 2001 issue of SPIN and the second I opened it, nostalgia hit me. It’s weird to think that 2001 was seven years ago, but it’s more weird to see that some things haven’t changed. According to that year’s reader’s poll results, Radiohead was voted best artist, best live act and best song (for “Optimistic”). Just shows how timelessly amazing Radiohead is.

Okay, now back to 2008…

Halloween is just around the corner and I’ve finally figured out what to dress up as! Do not fear if you haven’t decided yet though as Stereogum are here to save the day! Here are some of their suggestions. I personally recommend Rivers Cuomo and M.I.A. so if you end up choosing those, please send me some photos and I shall post them up in some sort of special Halloween blog! Random fact (if you didn’t know already), I dressed up as Feist from her “One Evening” video two years ago… people just assumed that I was a nurse.

Ever wondered what happened to the Pipettes since two-thirds left earlier this year? Well the remaining member, Gwenno, talks to Pitchfork about new members and new music.

The Octopus Project will be in Toronto on October 28th… but according to Chromewaves, the location is a mystery.

Also, feeling some Tegan and Sara withdrawal since the end of their whacky MySpace video-adventures? Well Tegan is apparently keeping a temporary blog thing with Spinner for the next few weeks. Read it here!

Must See Shows Tonight:
Lykke Li + Friendly Fires @ The Mod Club
The Common Dears + Beekeepers Society + Great Lenin’s Ghost + Flying Eyes @ Silver Dollar
Crystal Castles @ Circa
Foals @ Lee’s Palace

I would kill for tickets to Lykke Li. “Breaking it Up” has been my song of the week; I’ve literally listened to it 20-30 times a day. It’s ridiculous. Also, I’m currently listening to Friendly Fires for the first time and I quite like what I hear. Its part pop, part disco, but not enough cowbell. Haha!

I know I promised that the shows page would be up but Tech Nerd is busy at the moment being all nerdy and such so please bear with us. I will also sporadically disappear from time to time to tend to educational duties. But for now, I shall finish sorting through my next stack of magazines to sell…

Musically,
Melody

The Way To Celebrate

The Winter Gloves

The Winter Gloves

I must admit, I don’t go to libraries often. But it’s not because I don’t like them, I just have a terribly embarrassing amount of money owed to the library. I’m surprised they don’t have wanted posters of me up by now. Anyway, if it weren’t for that, I’d totally be there everyday.

The only thing each year that gets me off my ass and actually want to go to the library though is the annual free concert at the North York Central Library. In the past two years, fantastic acts such as Final Fantasy, Ohbijou, Republic of Safety and The Bicycles have performed there and this year shall be no different as the line-up is as follows: Slim Twig, Masia One, The Winter Gloves and Gentleman Reg. The show is supposed to promote the amazing CD collections in our public libraries and trust me, if I could use my library card, I would use it primarily for borrowing CDs. The first time I looked at the CDs at North York Central, I found tons of Canadian gems I wanted to take home with me. I eventually caved in though, borrowing approximately 15 CDs using my friend’s library card. I begged her for her card. So mark those calendars down, my friends – November 15th, 8:00 p.m. FREE. But BEWARE as tickets are limited to 2 per person and usually run out quickly. These are the following places to run to for tickets: Soundscapes Records, North York Central, Toronto Reference, Albion, Northern District, Parkdale and Malvern.

If workshops are your thing, you may want to check these out as well (as copy and pasted from Soundscapes’ website):

In other news…

And to cap this blog off – want something to do next Monday? Feeling like a CD release party? Then go to Sebastien Grainger’s at the Supermarket, as that show will be the official starting point for the ex-DFA drummer’s fall tour in support of his upcoming self-titled record (out on October 21st, via Outside Music here in Canada and Saddle Creek in the states). If you want more than just music from Mr. Grainger, you’re in luck as he’s been writing a food blog for quite some time now. Check it out here!

Goodbye for now! Hope everyone’s Thanksgiving went well. As you read this, I will be having my left-over turkey meal!

I Woke Myself Up

October 12th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

Julie Doiron

Julie Doiron

I forgot how tiring it was to shop all day. My feet are aching as much as my head (mmm, sex on the beaches are so good!) right now. Anyway, that’s all you’ll probably need to know about my trip. I’ll be back as of tomorrow night, so don’t worry – you can take the girl out of Toronto but you can’t take the Toronto out of the girl! EW… I can’t believe I just said that. But this is true, my friend, as I was blatantly cheering for the Leafs in the restaurant during the Habs game. Strange looks all around were given; even from my sister.

Back in Toronto…

One thing I would love to attend, but can’t when I return would be Tuesday night’s dynamic bill of Julie Doiron, Mt. Eerie, Calm Down It’s Monday and Wyrd Visions at the Church of Redeemer. Stupid work. But if you aren’t busy, I’d highly recommend this show as Julie Doiron is amazing live and her on the drums for CDIM is too adorable for words. Tickets are still available at Rotate and Soundscapes and this show is also early and all-ages!

While you’re at those record stores purchasing tickets, you may as well pick up some exciting new releases, no? Start with the new record by Land of Talk (who are on tour with singer, Liz Powell’s new buddies, Broken Social Scene) and gradually move your way to the new Deerhoof album. There are tons of new albums coming out soon, so trust me, it’ll be impossible to leave a record store empty-handed. Plus, Sebastien Grainger’s highly-anticipated record will finally be released on October 21st!

But if you’re feeling too lazy and/or poor to go out, you can always just tune in to Mother Mother on CTV’s Canada AM on Thursday, October 16th. It’s free and you don’t have to get off your ass – it’s a win-win.

Wanna do some reading too? Well apparently Pitchfork will be publishing a “music guide” of 500 must-hear songs. Thank goodness, there will be no album reviews included in this book. Sounds quite interesting, I guess. As reported by the kind folks at Pitchfork, the book will be gracing book shelves on November 11th. So if you don’t have 6 textbooks or novels to read for school, pick this up. But also pick up SPIN magazine’s 20 Years of Alternative Music – great book!

That’s it for now, my friends… GO LEAFS!

Musically,
Melody
