Bishop Allen

Bishop Allen

My mp3 player feels like it’s been stuck in a rut lately. Not because I haven’t been listening to anyone new, but because I’ve been listening to everything on CBC Radio 3 and MySpace instead! So my only choice is to get some new music on it NOW! I’ll have to go out and do some quality CD shopping tomorrow, but for now I’m still cruising MySpace. Here’s what I’ve been busy listening to though!

1. Lily Allen – It’s Not Me, It’s You

I’ve always stuck by Lily Allen. I think she’s talented, wild and out-spoken – which I love. Her Brit-pop melodies are catchy and they’re feel good tunes to listen to when you need that jolt of energy on a grim day! On her new release, It’s Not Me, It’s You, she still maintains that cute, memorable pop sound, but is considerably matured. She’s still witty and packing loads of attitude, but it definitely sounds more refined. Personal favourites at the moment include “Fuck You” and “Not Fair”. Make sure to catch her when she comes in town on April 22 at the Phoenix!

2. Thunderheist – “Jerk It”

This Toronto electro-rap duo has been around for quite some time now but it wasn’t until recently that I grew an obsession with them thanks to the lovely folks at CBC Radio 3; particularly their hot single, “Jerk It”. Their hard-hitting beats and rhythms are danceable, fun, and seriously addictive. As an added bonus, the video for this single is also amazing. Watch here and jerk it, jerk it, dust it off and jerk it! Watch for them to also drop by the Phoenix on April 30 as the headliners for this year’s Exclaim Anniversary tour.

3. The Rural Alberta Advantage – “Sleep All Day” (Green Go Remix)

I haven’t stopped listening to Green Go since the Singing Lamb launch party, to be honest. But their upcoming remix album I’m hearing about is really getting me excited lately. With mixes of amazing bands such as The Rural Alberta Advantage, Woodhands, Gentleman Reg, Women, The D’Urbervilles and more, this is building up to sound like one of the best remix albums of the year (so far at least…it is February after all). Go to CBC Radio 3 now and look up Green Go’s profile under New Music Canada for their remix of the RAA’s “Sleep All Day”. What was originally a subdued, calm track driven by Paul Banwatt’s drumming is now an ambient, dark and danceable hit that also picks up on the original’s beat mixed with layers of synths and tambourines. I LOVE IT. Look for the Guelph beat makers this Saturday at Sneaky Dee’s for Whale Tooth’s EP release show, along with The Balconies.

4. Bishop Allen – Grrr…

With their new album, Grrr… coming out on March 10, the band recently released two new tracks online, including album opener “Dimmer” and “The Ancient Common Sense of Things”. From the sounds of these new songs, the band still possesses the indie-pop charm that first won their way into the hearts of anyone who heard “Click Click Click Click” on the TV somewhere or watched Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. “Dimmer” seems to pick up perfectly from 2007′s The Broken String with it’s sweet sing-along melodies, joyful string arrangements and simplistic guitars. “The Ancient Common Sense of Things” also proves the same points. Definitely an album to look forward to next month!

Happy listening!

TV On The Radio

TV On The Radio

Remember how I complained about the Coachella line-up? Well I hate Bonnaroo now too.

Stereogum, in addition to breaking my heart, also healed it a bit with some new Bishop Allen. Click here to check it out; their new album Grrr… is out March 10th!

TV on the Radio will be on Saturday Night Live this weekend! First the Fleet Foxes, now TV on the Radio? Sweet.

Stream the new song Flaming Lips song, entitled “Anything You Say Now I Believe You” on their MySpace now!

Cloud Cult and Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s will be at the El Mocambo on April 3rd. Tickets will be $10.

Also appearing at the El Mo on March 3rd will be the Pitchfork’d Airborne Toxic Event. In regards to that review – wow. I have yet to listen to the album, so I cannot make any further comments; but wow.

Vancouverites, Bend Sinister will be stopping by for two dates in Toronto – one at the Horseshoe (March 10th – FREE) and the other at Black Betty (March 12th – as part of CMW)

If you missed out on the free Thunderheist gig at Nathan Philips Square this past weekend, you’re in luck as they have been confirmed as the headliners for this year’s Exclaim Anniversary Tour! They will return to Toronto on April 30th at the Phoenix. Further details including opening acts are TBA.

Darrelle London will host a CD Release Show for his upcoming release, Edible Word Parade at the Supermarket on Tuesday February 17th. Doors are at 8:00 pm, cover is $5 and opening for London will be Mandippal!

You like Hollerado? Like them enough to catch them every Thursday this month? The Montreal band will be playing every Thursday at Sneaky Dee’s with different guests each week that are as follows:

Feb. 5 – Young Rival and Atom Division
Feb. 12 – Dinosaur Bones and Barnburner
Feb. 19 – The Vestaloynes and Bad Flirt
Feb. 26 – Black Names

Another fantastic option for this Thursday? The Robot Ate Me, Braxton Clover, Emperor X and Your Volunteer at Rancho Relaxo! Cover is $6!

On Friday, The Boat will host its monthly “Room Party” show. This month, they will feature Toronto’s own Foxfire and Hard Dough! Cover is $5!

That will be all for now. I must apologize for the lack of updates on the Shows page this week. I will make it for it soon!

I’d also like to welcome a new member of our family, Athena Ngai! I’m sure you’ll all grow to love her just as much as I do! Scroll down to read her first post about The Coast! (unintentional rhyming!)

Happy listening!

Website News Update!

The Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys

Sorry for the lack of posts lately; we’re still fixing some kinks around the site (while listening to The Kinks? I think that should be mandatory) and uploading miscellaneous things. In response to a comment made, we will work on an RSS feed soon! As well as many other fantastical things that will just blow your mind! Anyway, the shows page is fairly updated now so feel free to browse through that for some suggestions. I personally suggest the Beastie Boys tribute this week at the Velvet Underground – who doesn’t love The Beastie Boys!

I’m in the middle of working on several blogs, so if I’m lucky, something new will be posted soon! Look forward to some old interviews to finally be put up and a NEW one featuring Hooded Fang coming this week! If you missed them at El Mocambo last night, opening for Bishop Allen, then make sure to check them out at the Steam Whistle Unsigned showcase (along with the United Steelworkers of Montreal, Shortwave and a Green Go DJ set!), the Wavelength anniversary show, or at Canadian Music Week! For more details, check out the shows page!

Now I demand you to go and listen to Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees!

Happy listening!

Back It Up, Boys

The Arcade Fire

The Arcade Fire

Welcome (back) to the Singing Lamb, everyone!

I’ve missed you all dearly! I know it’s been a month or two since I’ve written a blog, so I may be a little rusty at the moment. Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday though and partied on New Year’s Eve.

In light of the new sight and all its new organizations, I’ve decided to reorganize my posts this year into two types of posts – features and news! Maybe it’s just my own paranoia, but I always felt that the news snippets I throw in at the end of my blogs were weird, so yes, this is just some distinction from when I babble on about miscellaneous news and when I babble on about one particular band I’d like to talk about.

I know that all the Pitchfork’s and all the Stereogum’s of the blogosphere are still whizzing with year-end this and upcoming that, so I’m going to merely sift through all of that and report any actual news that’s been reported throughout the jolly weeks of December…

First off, congrats to She & Him’s Zooey Dechanel and Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard for getting engaged. I think I can speak for everyone I know that this came as a surprise as I didn’t even know they were dating to begin with, but good for them. Was anyone else just hoping that Zooey was really engaged toM.Ward? These rumours are actually yet to be confirmed by either Dechanel or Gibbard’s publicist, so for all we know, this could be an indie episode of Punk’d or something.

For those who are anxiously awaiting something from The Arcade Fire, good news is that they have a live documentary entitled Miroir Noir, bad news is that it won’t be out till March. On the bright side, if you’re the online shopping type, you can pre-order it now on their site and even order a fancy limited edition version, with bonus material and nicer packaging for an extra $15. This was on my Christmas list but alas, I didn’t get it. Guess I’ll just buy it when it comes out. Also, the band has released an unreleased track from 2007′s Neon Bible“Burning Bridges, Breaking Hearts”.

Speaking of new tracks from Montreal bands, 2006 Polaris Prize nominees Malajube has released a new song as well, entitled “Ursuline” from their upcoming album, Labyrinthe (due out February 19, Dare to Care).

You can catch them, along with plenty more at this year’s Canadian Music Week (March 12-14). I must say, the line-up for this festival is getting me really excited – and it’s not even March yet! Highlights to look out for includes (but not limit to) the following: 6 Day Riot, Basia Bulat, Chad Vangaalen, Cuff the Duke, Gentlemen Reg, Ghost Bees, Hexes & Ohs, Hooded Fang, Hey Rosetta!, Human Highway, Jon-Rae Fletcher, Laura Peek & The Winning Hearts, Library Voices, Rebekah Higgs, Spiral Beach, The Acorn, The Rural Alberta Advantage, The Ting Tings, The Weather Station, Vancougar, Women, We Are Wolves, and Young Galaxy(who played a quick set at CMW’s award show, The Indies last year). Just thinking about this makes me crazy; I don’t know about you! I’ll keep you posted on any additions in the upcoming months. Last year, I was the queen of CMW in-store performances (Plants and Animals, Winter Gloves, Laura Barrett, Forest City Lovers, and Immaculate Machine – all in three days), so I’ll also be sure to inform you all when these wonderful in-stores will take place.

No known venues and dates have been announced (with the exception of the Bloc Party show at the Kool Haus on the last day of the festival), but according to ‘For the Records’, Hooded Fang, The RAA, The Magic Boys Who Say No, and Green Go will be playing on March 13th at the Silver Dollar. E-X-C-I-T-I-N-G!

Also mentioned on ‘For the Records’, Bruce Peninsula will be doing an in-store at Soundscapes on February 4 (times TBA?) and the Rural Alberta Advantage will be playing another show on February 22 at Sneaky Dee’s.

Hooded Fang, who will tour briefly with the RAA, will also open for Bishop Allen on January 17 at El Mocambo; tickets are still available at Soundscapes and Rotate This ($10). If not, you can also catch them on Valentine’s Day as part of Wavelength’s 9th Anniversary fest (Feb. 12-15). They will play alongside $100, Brides, The Luyas, and the Element Choir at the Polish Combatant Hall (206 Beverley St.). Tickets to the anniversary shows are only at the door and are either $10 or pay what you can – sweet!

Night one of the Wavelength Anniversary Fest includes Timbre Timbre, Ghost Bees, and Dorit Chrystler at the Music Gallery, with the Diableros and Loitering Heroes later on that night at the Cameron House. Night two features Slim Twig, Bonjay, Child Bite and The Magic at Wrongbar. The fest will close off on the 15th with Foxfire, I Am Robot and Proud, Thank You, and Mi Ami at Sneaky Dee’s. Again, all shows are $10 or pay what you can. Oh, February’s looking good.

Hope that’s enough to swallow in one sitting! More to come – new year, new site, more news! 09′s looking bright and hopeful!

Happy listening!

Melody

Nick and Norah!

Nick and Norah!

Bienvenue!

…And that’s about as much French as I will speak here in Montreal this weekend. I’ve only been here for a few hours, but it feels so good to be out and about back here. Unfortunately, there are no good shows going down (with the exception of The Big Bang tour featuring Jamie Lidell and Chromeo – but I’d only be there for Lidell), so my sister and I have opted to stick with good ole movies instead.

Although I’ve already seen it, my sister hadn’t seen Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I’ll say it once, and I’ll say it again – it was short and incredibly sweet. And no, I wasn’t just referring to the stellar soundtrack. But while we’re on the topic of the soundtrack… may as well discuss! Even if the movie sucked, I would’ve loved them for the music alone. Not only were they able to squeeze in some great tracks by Islands, We Are Scientists, The Submarines, and Band of Horses, but I thoroughly enjoyed the cameos made by Bishop Allen and Devendra Banhart. Michael Cera may play similar roles often, but that doesn’t mean he’s not lovable and charming, especially as a heartbroken musician (awww!). And Kat Dennings as Norah just completes me. Simply put. Nick and Norah’s is certainly a cheesy one, but I loved every minute of it. Now I want to go to New York, damn it… anyone?

On a serious note, if you haven’t listened to Bishop Allen, please do so now. Don’t know where to start? Watch this.

I’m actually quite low on news today, so I’ll just keep this post short and sweet – just like Nick and Norah’s.

Musically,
Melody

Give A Little Love

Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale

Are you sick and tired of the classic YMCA dance? If so, then Noah and the Whale are here to save you.

I’m sorry if I’m behind on the Noah and the Whale bandwagon, but I am on it now and that’s all that matters. For months now, I’ve been hearing so much buzz on this UK band and until recently, I didn’t understand why. Well after paying a little visit to their MySpace and immediately after watching their video for “5 Years Time,” I finally understand. Light-hearted, fun and ever-so-catchy, Noah and the Whale at times remind me of a British version of Bishop Allen, whom I also adore. This is especially noticeable in the aforementioned single, “5 Years Time,” where fellow British darling, Laura Marling accompanies the band on vocals. That song is so darn catchy; I can listen to it fifty times a day, and not get tired of it – for a few weeks. That also brings me back to my Bishop Allen comparison, as “5 Years Time” always makes me think of Allen’s “Click Click Click Click”. I don’t know why, but it just does. So if you are still oblivious to the world of Noah and the Whale, I suggest you start from that song and gradually build your love for them there. Oh, and the YMCA reference? Watch “5 Years Time” and you’ll see.

On that note, I would also like to bring your attention to Noah and the Whale’s upcoming show at the El Mocambo on December 9th. Not a free show like the one at the Horseshoe last time, but completely worth paying for!

One show that will be free is today’s in-store performance at Criminal Records, featuring B.C.’s own Brasstronaut. I’m currently on their MySpace, getting familiar with some of their material, and I must admit, it’s quite decent. Heavy on the brass (as their band name would imply) – yes. Catchy though? Yes! They play at 6 p.m. They also played last night at the Drake with The Two Koreas and Invasion, so if you’re upset that you missed that, run down to Criminal Records now!

Another in-store next week to look forward to would be Toronto’s very own Lioness, who will be at Sonic Boom on October 14th at 7 p.m. Unfortunately, I will be missing out on this one but I’ve heard many, many good things about Lioness. So if you’re not bogged down by work duties, please head on down and be my eyes and ears and remember to report back!

And if you’re still contemplating plans for this Halloween, may I suggest a lovely event called “24 Hours at the Centre of Gravity”? I have plans already, but this is definitely something I would go to if my plans fall through! Like the title suggests, it’s an all nighter featuring a fantastic line-up of local favourites including Spiral Beach, Tropics, The Miles, Big Digits, The Kettle Black, Run With The Kittens, The People Of Canada and Boxes & Bags. Exciting, no? Well let this awesome Facebook event convince you! The cherry on top, you may ask? Costume contest!!

For now, as you are pondering your costume choices for October 31st, I shall leave you to continue my search for more amazing music – oh, and my own Halloween costume. I’m thinking a Spice Girl, She-Ra or Princess Daisy from the Mario game series. I don’t know yet, we’ll just have to see!

Musically,
Melody
