The Singing Lamb: So you guys are currently on tour with Silversun Pickups; how’s that going?

Kate Cooper: It’s great! We’re about a week and a half in and they’re awesome, great people and good friends so we’re having a lot of fun!

The last time I saw you guys was at the Horseshoe with Telekinesis and that was an awesome show.

Kate: Well Telekinesis is awesome, so yeah!

Well I’ve noticed that you’ve been constantly on the road since the release of your album.

Kate: Pretty much!

Have you had time to sit down and take it all in yet?

Kate: Before this tour, about a month ago, we had about two months off and we had a month off earlier in the year but yeah, it has been hectic!

I read somewhere that you and Damon used to work at a record store.

Kate: Yes, that’s correct!

I was just wondering, the way that people have been discovery music now, it’s not so much going into record stores but online or blogs or whatever. Do you miss the days where you would go into a record store to find out about new music?

Kate: Well personally, I miss going into a record store but that’s because I’m broke and I have no money and if I go into a record store I spend money! I mean, it’s changed so much so quickly. I worked there for two years but the whole time it was comfy; the weekends were crazy and it was just a place where kids hung out and it was awesome. When I was working there, there were probably eight shoplifters but near the end, the reason why we stopped working there was because the store closed and we were the last two employees standing. Definitely when I get time off I go to record stores but I know that the new generation of people don’t go. There are upsides and downsides to it because, yeah the record stores are going out but I still think people are competing just as much if not more. I know people steal my album and trust me, if more people bought it instead of stealing it my life would be a whole lot easier but its just reality and you’ve got to move forward and figure out ways around it. But that being said, it will never beat going into record stores and buying records.

I agree! I just like the human interaction more; they’re just so much friendlier than reading a blog or something.

Kate: Well, not always! I agree; I feel like everyone has a blog, but I don’t give a fuck what you want to say, I don’t care. I go into a record store and figure it out for myself. Everyone has something to say but that doesn’t mean they should publish it.

There have been a lot of end-of-the-decade lists recently. What are some of your favourite records of the decade?

Kate: Whoa, I’ve never been asked that question! I was just thinking to myself, ‘Oh my god, it’s 2009!’ Wow, that’s huge! It’s so hard; it’s like asking me for my favourite book. I mean, most of my adult life was in that decade listening to music, so hmm that’s tricky!

Were there any albums in particular that inspired your record?

Kate: No, actually! I don’t think so. There was no album in particular in mind when we were writing the record. I think I was listening to a lot of Against Me but that doesn’t reflect at all. I wish it did but it doesn’t!

Working at a record store must’ve been like having a home library to listen to whatever you wanted.

Kate: And talk about it, pretty much!

After this tour, do you have any plans for recording a follow-up?

Kate: We have a tour in January with Tegan and Sara and after that we’re not too sure. We have 20 songs written but it’s just a matter of figuring it out where, when, why and how. There’s still a little bit of live left in this record!

Do you have any artistic ideas for the new one though?

Kate: We’re actually playing some new songs live and I guess we do. I don’t want to be the same, I want to grow with every record and I think with the songs that have already been written have lent themselves to a different sounding version of us which is exciting. I don’t have any grand plans that we’re going to be a techno band or anything like that but all I want to do is make honest music.

That’s what I like about your music though; you’re a two-piece band and you sound like a two-piece band. It doesn’t sound like there are too many overdubs or anything. I hear that the new Tegan and Sara album has no overdubs.

Kate: Well I think it has some! We got a chance to be there while they were recording it and it’s a great sounding record, Chris Walla did an amazing job.

Awesome! And finally, if you were a singing animal, what would you be?

Kate: I guess I would like to be a shark. I know they don’t sing, but they make people scream. I guess dolphins kind of sing. I’m also sitting by the beach at the moment so I feel like I’m kind of influenced by the beach atmosphere!

It kills me that I have to pass on TV on the Radio and The Dirty Projectors in June, but I’ve sworn off the Sound Academy since my last excursion (with some exceptions, of course). Bad news is that I’ll miss TV on the Radio for sure, but good news is that the Dirty Projectors will return later that month for a show at Lee’s with Skeletons on June 24th!

The Rural Alberta Advantage @ Horseshoe (July 30th, 19+)

Santigold will be at the Phoenix on June 3rd.

I hate myself for forgetting to mention this (although to be fair, I said it on Twitter when I found out a few days ago) - Laura Barrett and The Phonemes will be at the Tranzac on Thursday, April 2nd. And on April 3rd,Out of This Spark Records will present Picastro, Casey Mecjia (Ohbijou, Bruce Peninsula), and Chris Sutherland at the front room of the Tranzac. Doors for both shows will be at 10:00 pm and the April 3rd show is Pay What You Can.

Green Go will be celebrating the release of their new album Borders at the Wrong Bar on April 30th, along with special guests The Magic, Everything All the Time and DJ sets by OPOPO. Cover is $5.00 – worth it!

In case you missed Australia’s An Horse during CMW, the duo will be back on April 21st, opening for Appleseed Cast at the Horseshoe. Tickets are still available for $10.00 and this will be a 19+ event.

Lewis and Clark will open for Bat For Lashes at the Mod Club on April 25th. Tickets are still available for $15.00 and this will also be a 19+ event.

Opening for The Pains of Being Pure At Heart at Lee’s on April 28th will be Brooklyn’s Zaza.

Portland’s Grouper will join Animal Collective on tour this summer. Look for them to make a stop at the Sound Academy on May 16th. I do believe tickets are sold out for this event though.

And last but not least in “opening acts” news, Montreal’s David MacLeod will be opening for Plants and Animals at the Mod Club on May 7th. Tickets are still available for $15.00 and this event will be 19+.

Sunset Rubdown has announced details about their new album, entitled Dragonslayer. Read more about it (and take a look at the sweet album cover) here!

And to end off today’s news update, I’d like to dedicate this post to Blender Magazine, as the publication will be shutting down, with its current issue on newsstands being its last. I had stopped reading Blender for quite some time now, but I was a fan at one point; they will be missed.

Happy listening!

Wishing Well

October 26th, 2008 | By: Melody Lau

Love is All

Love is All

Have you ever felt like you’ve been stuck in a listening rut? Well that’s exactly what I’ve been feeling right now. Everyday I turn on my Windows Media Player and scroll through my artists, I think to myself, “Why don’t I have anything to listen to?!” (Similar to when I look into my closet in the morning and think, “Why don’t I have anything to wear?!”). So I’ve been on a quest – a musical quest for new music. And I guess that little push was just what I needed!

I’ve heard of Love is All for quite some time now (since the release of their 2005 LP Nine Times That Same Song) but I just never actually listened to them. So when I saw a new video for their single, “Wishing Well” on Pitchfork, I decided to give it a go – and I loved it! Lead singer, Josephine Olausson’s voice seriously reminds me of someone, but I just can’t put my finger on it… it’s good nonetheless. Their sound is a perfect combination of punk and pop and a sprinkle of Swedish charm. If you’re also enjoying what you hear, Love is All will be making a tour stop in Toronto on December 11th at the Horseshoe Tavern (19+) and their new album, A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night, will be out on November 11th.

While I was on Pitchfork, I also read up on some of their coverage of this year’s CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival, particularly taking notice of Amy Philips’ Thursday coverage. At first, I read her post because of Sebastien Grainger, but when I scrolled to the end, I noticed a few shots of an artist named Little Boots. The review was not a positive one, as it criticizes her live act but I was intrigued anyway. So I immediately looked her MySpace up and began to listen to “New in Town”. At first, the keys and snyths were a little overwhelming but as soon as the chorus kicked in, I was hooked. That is one gosh darn catchy song! Definitely check her out if synth-disco-pop is your thing. Maybe not live though… It’s okay though, she’s not stopping by Toronto anytime soon anyway.

And most recently (as in this morning), I just started listening to a great Australian duo named An Horse. Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara) had written a MySpace blog about the duo and in my curious state of mind, I decided to check them out. And they are definitely perfect for fans of Tegan and Sara. The duo of Kate Cooper and Damon Cox are currently doing some tour stops with the T&S and their new album is available now on iTunes.

I’ve also downloaded (whoa, I haven’t done that in a while…) some Hercules and Love Affair, Marnie Stern and the new Land of Talk album, so I’ll get back to you when I finish listening to them all. I feel rejuvenated with musical energy! But please, if you would like to feed me more music, send me your suggestions at melodylau.620@gmail.com!

In other news around the city…

Pink Mountaintops will be at the Drake Hotel on November 7th. Tickets are $10 and are available now at Soundscapes and Rotate.

Tokyo Police Club are playing an exclusive show, brought to you by The Edge 102.1 and Jack Daniel’s Studio No. 7. The event will be taking place on November 9th at 8:00 and it will be 19+. Details as to where are still TBA and if you want to win tickets, you’ll have to listen to The Edge or go to jdstudiono7.com for further details.

That free Diableros show at Kensington Market today has been cancelled. The band apologizes and will be playing at The Boat in December instead.

Goodnight Loving, The Stolen Minks, The Weirdies and WWI will be at Sneaky Dee’s on November 5th.

Hot damn, I wished I was there.

That’ll be it for now! Happy listening. If you were also in a listening-rut recently, I hoped this helped.

Musically,
Melody
