CONTEST: Memory Tapes @ Wrongbar – August 13, 2011

August 11th, 2011 | By: Aviva Cohen

Courtesy of our pals at EMBRACE, we are giving away two passes to Memory Tapes @ Wrongbar – August 13, 2011.

Player Piano, the excellent second album from Memory Tapes is released this summer on Something In Construction in Europe and Carpark in the US. It was, like its predecessor, recorded at Dayve Hawke’s home studio in rural New Jersey, where he juggles looking after his young daughter and being a musician.

Seek Magic was released properly in March 2010 and has since sold over 30,000 copies worldwide. It received almost exclusively excellent reviews. Memory Tapes debuted his live show in January 2010 in Manchester, England and has since criss-crossed North America and played shows all across Europe and as far away as Australia. His remixes of the likes of Crystal Castles, Gucci Mane and Britney Spears have had consistent acclaim.

CONTEST: Givers @ Garrison – June 21st

June 8th, 2011 | By: Aviva Cohen

Courtesy of our pals at EMBRACE, we are giving away 2 passes to Givers @ The Garrison – June 21/11.

GIVERS is a band made up of five friends from Lafayette, Louisiana—it should be stated firstly that the music they make is simply an ongoing reflection of this bond. It is this connection that fuels every aspect of creation and performance for the band. They began their journey together as friends somewhere between high school and college, playing in various bands around Lafayette. Eventually the five would all come together for one night of improvised music at the request of a friend to fill an empty slot. It was this night that a new connection was explored. The music that was created would reflect and define what would become GIVERS. Within their first few shows they would cross paths with Dirty Projectors, who would eventually ask them to tour the east coast in the fall of 2009. Since then they have made touring a major priority, only breaking to record their first full length album, due this spring.

CONTEST: Fergus & Geronimo / Surf City @ Garrison – April 16, 2011

April 9th, 2011 | By: Aviva Cohen

Courtesy of EMBRACE we have two passes to give-a-way for Fergus & Geronimo w/ Surf City @ The Garrison on April 16, 2011.

Things that come from Texas are often odd and grand, and this is no exception for Denton’s Fergus & Geronimo. Named after the rival child gang leaders from the 1994 movie War Of The Buttons, their music is at times both focused and loose, and comes from a wide range of unexpected influences. At the core of the group is Jason Kelly and Andrew Savage, who met while Kelly was recording and mixing a record for Teenage Cool Kids, a band started by Savage. During that four month process of recording, Kelly and Savage bonded over music, the creative process of recording, and the possibility of having a band that draws from a variety of sources. Black and Chicano doo-wop, the energy and atmosphere of classic soul, the precise control of Frank Zappa, psychedelia, and a thought to nearly everything in between. “Sparks is a pretty big influence – not just musically, but the way that band operates,” Savage adds. “It is two guys making weird music with no other agenda than being creative and surprising, and that’s what I want this band to be. That band is a great example of a group that makes no compromises for creativity.”
