The Singing Lamb: Your record was released in February of this year; what have you been doing since then?

Jenn Grant: Just touring a lot; the past couple of months we’ve been touring across Canada. Also, I’ve been camping!

Cool! Do you camp a lot?

This summer, yeah! I always have and I just decided to do more this summer! It’s good; it’s giving me inspiration for writing.

Have you begun writing for a new album already?

I always write, I’m sort of writing for the new record now.

Some people prefer to write on the road and some prefer to write when they’re at home. So do you prefer to write on the road?

I actually much prefer writing at home but I did write the other day…

The last time you were in town was for NXNE; how was that?

It was really fun! We did a Six Shooters night at Lee’s Palace with lots of great people. We also did the Six Shooters BBQ as well; it’s like one of my favourite parties so it was good!

Awesome; I noticed you did a lot of festivals this summer!

I did a bunch…but I think I’m done! I’m taking some time in August to write so yeah, I did a bunch and I really like festivals, especially when people are really nice to you! In Perth, they were really nice to us!

Do you have a preference between festival shows and individual shows?

No, they’re all really different. This show feels more like a festival to me!

Yeah, because it’s outdoors and whatnot!

Yeah! It’s our first time playing here and we’re really good friends with Hey Rosetta! so it’s nice. It feels like a family show!

When you were here in Toronto for NXNE, you did a feature for CBC Radio where you conducted a bunch of “Awkward Interviews” – how was that?

I really liked it!

Would you prefer to interview others or be interviewed?

Interviewing! It depends, sometimes I like interviews but interviewing other people is something I never do, so it’s more fun.

What was the most awkward one?

The guy who tried to take his pants off…show me his man part. That was awkward!

Those were just random people off the street?

Yeah, just random. Not really people who knew about the festival.

Yeah, I can tell from those girls…

They were the funniest!

So you recorded your last record in Ontario and you’re here quite often – have you ever thought about moving here?

Uh, no. I’m really like…small-town! I feel really lost in the city most of the time, unless I’m at H&M so…

Ha! Your shirt’s from H&M isn’t it!

Yeah it is; couple of years ago! But yeah, there are places in Toronto. I know there’s a place on Yonge St. that you can get salad rolls at so I go there and I’m comfortable in my brother’s neighbourhood. I think if I lived in Toronto, in a neighbourhood, I would be more comfortable. But I’m from a daisy field!

Do you think you’ll ever move?

I think I may move to the country some day.

Cool! So this show you’re doing, it’s free and all ages. How do you feel about all-ages shows? There’s not a lot of good ones all the time, at least in Toronto there isn’t.

I think they’re great; why not! I always went all-ages shows. I’ve been going to shows since I was like, 15…

Same! Did you sneak into many shows when you were younger?

Uh, yeah! Lots!

Do you remember your first sneak-in show?

I think it was a band…I can’t remember the name of the band but it was at the local gay bar in Halifax, Reflections!

What was your drink of choice?

Creme de menthe! We also had those two-litre coolers, those were gross…

Ha! Finally, if you were a singing animal, what would you be?

Well I spent time with some animals this week, so it’s a big question! I met some raccoons and a bear and a dear but I guess I’d probably be a bird.

Why?

Because they sing anyway. Wait! I have to think about it again! Maybe I will be…maybe one of those birds that are white and extinct and puffy and they are by Newfoundland…no? It’s such a good question; I don’t want to give the wrong answer!

There’s no such thing as a bad answer!

I think maybe a lion, I don’t now why!

Okay a singing lion then!
