Dinosaur Bones

The Singing Lamb: Give us a brief history of the band. How long have you guys all known each other for? How did you meet? When did you form your band?

Ben Fox: Dave, Branko, and myself were in a band together for most of high school, and Branko went to school with Lucas, so we were tight and had been playing music together long before Dinosaur Bones. Joel and I met through a mutual friend and we hit it off, and ended up as roommates shortly before the band got going.

You’re based in Toronto – what are some of the best and worst things about Toronto, musically?

The best thing is probably the sense of community in the independent music scene, at least as far as we’ve experienced it. Showcases like Elvis Mondays at the Drake and New Music night at the Horseshoe giving a leg up to new bands, bands showing up at eachother’s shows to slap high fives and show love. Either this city has an amazing independent music scene, or we just magically happened to fall in with a crew of the best bands and greatest people ever.

The worst thing? Probably that Sam the Record Man doesnt exist anymore. I mean, seriously.

You guys have been playing for little over a year, and have released a wonderful EP in 2008, any plans soon to release another record or EP?

The next thing we release is going to be a full length album. We’re starting work on it soon, and it should be out by the fall. We’re really anxious and excited to get working on it.

You will be playing both Edgefest and NXNE this year; that’s exciting! Are you more excited about one than the other? What are some of your best and worst experiences with music festivals – both playing and attending.

Edgefest will be our first outdoor festival, so we’re not quite sure what to expect. We’ve got a couple of them coming up this summer, so hopefully by the end of it we’ll be used to playing in direct sunlight…. probably not! We’re all definitely excited about Edgefest though, just because it’ll be a completely new experience. We feel at home at the Horseshoe, so we’re looking forward to NXNE in a different way.

What album(s) are you currently listening to?

I (like everyone else) cant stop listening to the new Grizzly Bear record. It’s ridiculous. Seriously on another level. I’m also listening to what is probably an unhealthy amount of Fleet Foxes. It makes me want to grow a mountain beard and live in forest. Is that wrong? Also, the latest Walkmen album (You & Me) is amazing. One of my favourites to come out in a long time.

And finally, if you were a singing animal, what would you be?

A llama, cuz that would be hilarious.
